Elephants show up for an early check-in at Mfuwe Lodge

  • Mfuwe Lodge guests had an exciting morning (today) when three elephants showed up on the front step of the lodge, first munching on a tree by the library, where everyone could see them from the safety of the lobby, before following guests that had gotten into their game drive vehicles. One car in particular drew a lot of attention as the matriarch decided to check its passengers out before walking in the reception area. There, she curiously and carefully inspected the counter for a little while and then went back the way she came in and joined the other two that had stayed around the car park.
** It is important to note that the elephants are not tame but wild animals walking around Mfuwe Lodge and sometimes - usually from October through to December - walk through the lobby. Guides assess the situation to make sure guests are safely in a car or behind the reception counter when the elephants are around the lodge. **

ServantoftheoneTrueGod AlmightyGod The most effective way to say “no” to all that is to privatize the game and animal reserves in all of Africa.

Yeah, it's tourist season for the elephants, they came to see the funny little humans and study them in their domicile. I hope the elephants didn't feed them, you can't get rid of stray humans if you do, I learned the hard way from experience! Do NOT feed or support stray humans, once you do it's nearly impossible to get rid of them and then more will follow. I trust these elephants were smarter.

pjgumby I guess you are right! It was called Colonisation! It took them 500 years to get rid of the first arrivals, after painful enslavement and robbery.
Don’t be a hypocrite! All humans are humans and interdependent! I am glad we can come back peacefully this time enjoy nature’s view that we don’t have anywhere in the western world!

They are beautiful creatures. Inquisitive, curious and very intelligent. Humans are invaders and strangers there. This place have been part of their territory way before humans arrived there and build the lodge. They need to be protected. Hope the owners of the lodge do not over exploit this by bringing more tourist to the area. That could lead to a serious confrontation if humans don't keep their distance

jessie james As far as I can ascertain, Wellie is still alive and well. He'll stay with his mother's herd until he's a teenager, then join a bachelor herd, learning from older males until he's old enough to breed himself. Later on, he'll wander on his own, an undisputed king!

Hai Van Nguyen. No, do not give them food under any circumstances. If you do, they will associate the place with easy pickings and will return time and time again until they become a nuisance. They are very very clever but they will end up being classed as rogue elephants and possibly be shot and killed.

I don’t enjoy watching or listening to people when the video is about elephants!
People just clutter the aural and visual environment imo.
I realize the ppl who are making a living from this think they must tolerate the sounds of conversation and cameras clicking.
But if I ran this place and didn’t need to make a profit to keep it running, I would demand silence,
and as much invisibility as could be created.
