  • Dr. Voddie Baucham brings our first detailed message by defining what “social justice” is by the definitions provided by the adherents of the movement. Dr. Baucham then provides a polemic from an orthodox Christian understanding of justice.
    This presentation was given on January 16, 2019 at the Sovereign Nations 'Social Justice & The Gospel' Conference in Atlanta, Georgia preceding the G3 Conference.

      @dasindelta3540 Před 4 lety +1

      It is very interesting how we depend on Pastors to be the voice of community/world issues. Seems many are of this world and speak on things of this world at the failure of being obedient to the Bibical mandate of their purpose.... for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the BODY of CHRIST. Till we all come in the unity of the FAITH, and of the KNOWLEDGE of the Son of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Here's the OBVIOUS missing part... that we henceforth be no more CHILDREN, tossed to and fro, and carried about with EVERY WIND of doctrine by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into HIM (we have a culture of believers growing up to vocal about Pastors they like versus reciting passages of Scripture they like) in all things which is the head, even Christ. Eph 4:12-15.
      How did you grow in Christ from this message? How did you become more perfected in the knowledge of CHRIST and JUSTICE? I heard nothing about Christ centered JUSTICE supported by Scripture. There is a thing called Christ centered justice. Otherwise the one passage ge mentioned Micha 6:8 would not be part of the Scriptures. He never talked about seeking justice for a victim of police misconduct which is the loudest plea for justice God hears vibrating from the earth.
      Cain had some idea about justice, right? Why else would he say my PUNISHMENT is greater than I can bear. Behold thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth, and from (this is the deep part) thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth, and it shall come to pass that every one that findeth me shall slay me (see Gen 4:13-14).
      Stop being so dependent on "Pastors" to rightly divide truth. As a believer it is YOUR responsibility to study to show THYSELF APPROVED verus "approving" sermons by Pastors!

    • @fullerming
      @fullerming Před 4 lety

      @@dasindelta3540 In listening to Voddie's presentation again, I can see your point. His focus is on defining social justice, not on defining Biblical justice. He does define Biblical Justice, although he could have unpacked Micah 6_1-8 a little more, which he read at time marker 5:54 - 7:25 . He made a clear statement, "we must do justice" but he did not give application based on the text.
      Even so, is he right? Is today's social justice movement biblical or not? I can argue that starting a business is supported on biblical grounds - see Prov 31_16-18 or James 4_13-17. However, as James implies, the guiding principles and practices of that business must be based on biblical principles and values for the disciples of Jesus Christ. My goal is not to defend Voddie, per se; you can contact him and he can defend himself (He is a good man of God so give him grace - he is not a sinful hypocritical preacher, at least as far as I can see). My point is that ANY presentation can connect the dots of biblical truth to our lives and our spiritual growth without overtly justifying every salient point with a biblical proof-text. We can answer the question, "is the social justice movement biblical" and then wisely associate or not associate with various aspects of said movements.
      This presentation pre-dates the current spark and passions inflamed by the murder of George Floyd (although there is plenty of other unjust situations before this that Voddie could have addressed). Also, his speech topic was given to him - he didn't select it. But again, my point is not to defend him but to point out that any preacher can connect the dots of biblical truth and application without a myriad of references to the scriptures. One preacher who did this well was Martin Luther King, Jr. I'm not sure if you think that his speeches were appropriate or not or if they connected the dots or not, but I thought his speeches did this well (even though certain aspects of his own life were problematic). Many preachers only reference one text in their talks. (Some never related the rest of their sermon or speech back to the one text or they are way out of context- and yes that is a problem). I would argue that if the saints can gain even one thing from such talks (in the spirit of Ephesians 4_11-17 which you partially referenced) then the dots have been connected.
      Anyway, that's just my thoughts based on your assessment of the speech. Respond if you like. --- YBIC

    It’s been difficult to parse out the meaning of this phrase as we know that the Word of God calls us to do justice and to seek justice. It also calls for the care of the oppressed. The Old Testament talks so much about God hating when the powerful oppress the weak. Anyway, many Christians who are figuring out that term doesn’t mean what we think it means are still devoted to the idea of justice and caring for the poor and oppressed. Terms and words are moving targets in our postmodern world. This talk is helpful in order to help us think through what we are aligning ourselves with. For me, it meant working in ministry that helps women out of adult entertainment or rescuing and disciplining people out of human trafficking or out of addiction, homelessness and poverty. Ministries that teach self-responsibility and good job or entrepreneurship skills and of course preach the Gospel first. So not everyone who has used the phrase has bought into what it has now been fully co-opted to mean. I’m not a feminist, not an “ally.” Ally has been co-opted to mean “I affirm all your choices.” So, I agree with Mr. Baucham and this teaching is helpful to me to think through why Christians are debating one another on the use of this term.

      Under Smith’s system, from the Catholic point of view, “justice” was already becoming muddled, so the qualifier was added to try to make things clearer. He probably knew nothing about Marx at the time and it wasn’t until American Catholics attempted, under the leadership of Joe Kennedy, TRIED, and failed, to take over the Democrat Party (1895-1932) that it started to be twisted to its current FAR more muddled form.

Yet he proceeds to define it very precisely, and then tear it down based on his precise definition. Feels very much like he's creating a straw man, saying "See, here is what Social Justice is, isn't it awful?" and then proceeding to tear it down. If Social Justice is truly nebulous and amorphous term, how can it be defined so precisely and how can "everyone know exactly what it means"?

But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise”_ (2Corinthians 10:12). The trouble begins with classing ourselves, putting ourselves in separate little cliques. If I'm in Christ and you are also, we are ONE! This was the prayer of our High Priest, the Lord Jesus: _“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us”_ (John 17:20-21). _"Cosmic justice is not simply a higher degree of traditional justice, it is a fundamentally different concept. Traditionally, justice or injustice is characteristic of a _*_process._*_ A defendant in a criminal case would be said to have received justice if the trial were conducted as it should be, under fair rules and with the judge and jury being impartial. After such a trial, it could be said that "justice was done"-regardless of whether the outcome was an acquittal or an execution. Conversely, if the trial were conducted in violation of the rules and with a judge or jury showing prejudice against the defendant, this would be considered an unfair or unjust trial-even if the prosecutor failed in the end to get enough jurors to vote to convict an innocent person. In short, traditional justice is about impartial processes rather than either results or prospects._
    _Similar conceptions of justice or fairness extend beyond the legal system. A "fair fight" is one in which both combatants observe the rules, regardless of whether that leads to a draw or to a one-sided beating. Applying the same rules of baseball to all meant that Mark McGwire hit seventy home runs while some other players hit less than ten. The "career open to talents" or "a level playing field" usually means that everyone plays by the same rules and is judged by the same standards. Again, if the process itself meets that standard, then no matter what the outcome, "you had your chance." But this is not what is meant by those people who speak of "social justice." In fact, rules and standards equally applicable to all are often deliberately set aside in pursuit of "social justice." Nor are such exceptions aberrations. The two concepts are mutually incompatible._
    _What "social justice" seeks to do is to eliminate undeserved disadvantages for selected groups. ... This is often done in disregard of the costs of this to other individuals or groups-or even to the requirements of society as a whole. When one considers a society such as Sri Lanka, where group preferences initiated in the 1950s led to decades of internal strife, escalating into bitter civil war with many atrocities, it is not purely fanciful to consider that other societies may become more polarized and contentious-to everyone’s ultimate detriment-by similar schemes of preferential treatment for one segment of society."_

    "Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice!" -Habakkuk 2:12
    (Injustice: Lack of fairness or justice)
    I think i see what Voddie is trying to break down, but i think giving the people a thoroughly breakdown of what Biblical justice looks like, in context to politics, economics, and social matters, should have come before a lesson like this, or follow a lesson like this.
    Too many so-called followers of Christ are already not moved to do the things The Creator loves, and a message like this can just embolden those who already lack the affection to do right (justice).
    With that being said, i do think it is important that we hear messages like this because if we dont understand and define justice biblically, the world's understanding of "justice" will have us supporting homosexuality and other abominations like oppression!
    So even though i think this teaching was misplaced, its good because it can lead to further dialog.

    Thankyou for your insightful take on this thorny issue of "Social Justice". You have your finger on the pulse, and have so eloquently explained the problems for Christians in acquiescing to this dangerous agenda.

      These are groups Scripture references regarding justice....care for the fatherless, the orphan, and the widow. The other groups throughout Scripture are men, women, children. And there's more so this message lacks clarity on Godly justice.

    We need language which stands against the misappropriation of words. ACTUAL justice, versus social justice.

      How is it that justice isn't social? If we are called to seek it (Micha 6:8) in conjunction with walking humbly before God where would we be seeking it other than our society? In a vaccum, in the sky, in nature, on Mars/Venus? Is this 🎤 on?
