  • I recently done a video highlighting my favourite compact cameras, this camera is one of those 6. The Panasonic Lumix GX80/85 is an old camera but it is still one of my favourites.

I have the GX 80. Use it with the kit lens and a Panasonic 45-150, superb little camera, does everything I want.

I have had a GX7 and GX9. A while back I was thinking of buying a second GX9 body for a trip to the UK. I was surprised to find that in Japan the GX9 was the GX7 mark III, and this GX80/85 are the GX 7 mark II. I’m very happy with this line of cameras, even if I haven’t had this model.

I own the GX85(80 in Europe). This is more than a competent body. Small. Lightweight. Inexpensive. Cheap as chips. Takes beautiful stills & video. 16 MP is more than adequate unless you crop the stuff out of your images.
The only thing I’m not too keen on is all the GX bodies, other than the GX8, lack an audio jac. I just purchased a GX8 at the local camera store for about the same price as the GX85..
I love the Panasonic GX series. I am hoping Panasonic updates the GX8/9 with PDAF. The GX bodies all use contrast based DFD for autofocus. DFD works fine for photography. Not so much for video. Focus hunts and isn’t sticky.

I have the GX9 which is the next iteration of this camera with a 20 MB image. I highly recommend the GX9 too. 3 things I love with these cameras are:
    - range finder style
    - flipping back LCD is great for photography
    - the rotating EVF is probably what I like the most
And btw the touch screen on Panasonic cameras is so user friendly. These are easy to use cameras.

eBayers are still asking 400 - 500 pounds for the GX80. Not what I would consider cheap.

yes I really like this camera. in fact liked it that much I have two of them. I bought a new body just before they stopped making it for £340. I'm glad I did as they're going for more than this used now. I wish they would bring out an updated version.

Thanks Bob…do wish the camera screen flipped up completely (like on the rx100 series) but overall seems like a nice camera. Tempting.! Your OM5 would work too, but the side screen makes it less discreet though PDAF on video would be a plus. Slightly bigger though, but same weight with weather sealing. I don’t know if colours quite as nice. More than 2x price of course, even used.

Hello thank you for your feedback. I have one for 5 years and for streetphotography it's still good ! The kit lens (12 - 32 mm) is not bad, it's tiny, light, and stabilised. The software ergonomy is better than the Olympus family (even if i like a lot Olympus !).

Hi Bob, besides the size and weight difference, how would this compare to my GH6? It’s eight years older with a smaller sensor, but I’m a beginner photographer and I’m heavily invested in the micro 4/3 lens system. My GH6 seems ideal for video projects, But I’m still learning my stills photography skills and I feel like a different camera might be more suitable for that. What do you suggest?

What are your favorite lenses for the GX80/85? I have the 20mm 1.7 ii but looking to add some more to my kit. Thanks!

I follow a youtuber that buy an sell old cameras, he is not a fan of Panasonic cameras, that brand has the much more faults than other brands.

Most people find Panasonic cameras to be among the most reliable out there with one proviso. Certain models share a rear control dial that has a push feature, a jog-dial if you like, and that dial could be problematic. I have never had an issue, probably because I never press that dial in to switch its function. I use it almost exclusively for exposure compensation.
