In this screen printing educational video you will learn how the process works from start to finish. You will find out how the stencil is created on the mesh using a photographic emulsion and a UV light source. The video will teach you how the stencil works with the screen and mesh as well as how the ink makes the print. Then we talk about how the ink is cured so that it is safe to wash in the laundry. It touches on scoop coaters, emulsion, screens, film positives, curing plastisol inks and much more! This is an excellent video for people who know nothing about how screen printed garments are made. This video is ten times more informative than any other screen printing video on the web. Excellent job.
I remember when I made this so long ago. I have come a long way from this first video on CZcams. It's been a fun ride and I hope to keep going for ever ;)
Even though it's the first, it's still very helpful. Lets see if I can manage to watch all your other videos.
Awesome, thank you! I hope you enjoy my video work :) Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
you should make an updated video then
@@WillVRam I may indeed do that very soon. But it will be the same info. Just maybe a better video ;) Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
@@CatspitProductions I will be watching for it
I have saw a lot of videos about this process, but never something so well explained like this video.
Thank you very much! I'm very happy to know you enjoyed the video.Make sure to check out my over 450 screen printing videos. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Dude, have you ever test using a led monitor/tv in white background with a black image to transfer it to the screen? I was thinking about it lol. Could save a lot of money and time.
No I have not since it would have to be UV light coming from the monitor. I really don't know how much UV they would put off.
Interesting indeed.
You're an amazing teacher. You don't just show people that you can screen print...or explain it. You REALLY teach it! Like everyone is a student and is going to make this their career. I couldn't find a video that wasn't very in depth...but i saw other people with what i was looking for. I didn't watch theirs and kept looking so i could see YOU do it. Keep it up man.
I love this!
No bullshit,no comedy
Just serious and detail to detail
@kevin bermudez Thank you!! I have some of that stuff in my newer videos... LOL. I was a bit reserved back when I made this ;) Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
I got a screen printing kit years ago. I never used it because I couldn't understand the directions. I don't know if the directions were bad or if I just wasn't smart enough to understand.
I found your video and had to log in just to tell you that, I really like that you went into detail about how and why parts of the process works. I think I was getting hung up on the emulsion part basically creating a stencil. Thanks for sharing you've made it all clear.
You're very welcome. I'm very happy to know I could help you out like that. That's great. Good luck and let me know if I can help out anytime. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
@illogiclogic That is awesome to hear! It is my pleasure to help out. Thanks so much for your support. I appreciate the killer comment very much!
Nice, glad I could help. Thank you! Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
hey x this is great i have a textiles exam tomorrow and i now know how to do this thank you!!
I always check out your channel when I get stuck on a party of the process thanks
CatspitProductions .....Having found this video after watching many of your more recent ones makes you realise just how much knowledge you have to share....10 years ago this was made...I dont think I have ever looked through You Tube before and found such a jump in time with the same Channel....not that I have noticed anyway....much respect deserved.
I am considering starting a small screen printing business....mainly though this is because I simply want to do it ...it is soooooooo pleasing to see it being done...I love it.
I am subscribed to Mikey Designs and Silk Screen and I am constantly asking him questions ...He's probably getting sick of me by now but I love his channel and he really knows his stuff....He was ..and still is...the person that inspired me to do it.
Anyway...if its ok with you I would like to ask you many many questions also :-)
I love the channel...Im slowly moving through your videos...subscribed liking very much.
Thank you for all the time and effort you have put in to this channel.
Thank you! Yes. 10 years on CZcams this year and continuous production of tutorial videos all the while. Thanks for subscribing and yes, you can ask questions anytime. I'm happy to help out where I can. Matt is very cool and makes great videos. You're welcome ;) it's my pleasure. Thanks for watching! Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words. I am happy to hear you enjoy my videos so much. Nice to know, thanks for sharing. Thanks for the comment!
Good video man. I just recently ordered a shirt from a company, and they said it was screen printed for long lasting durability.
I looked at the pros and cons of Digital Shirt Printing and Screen Printing, and found out that screen printing is a good choice because the design on the shirt will last much longer than Digital Shirt Printing.
I was curious as to who Screen Printing was done, and thanks to your video, I understand the process. Thank you!
Thankyou good sir a most informative first step for us neophytes of screen printing. Well done
Thank you!! You’re very welcome ;) Thanks for watching!
I now clearly understand the process of screen print, many thanks :)
You are welcome. My pleasure to help out. Thanks for the comment!
hello..your video is very helpful for the viewers...
..i've been trying to search some alternative ways to save money for our organisation in printing..and yeah, you gave me the best idea...

Very cool, you're welcome. Glad I could help out. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠
Thank you, I’m very happy to know the video was so useful to you. For exposing screens it’s more about UV output but if you can only use a work lamp style unit then 500 to 1000 watts would work. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠
@CatspitProductions I'm just about to get started. Your vids help out big time for visuals and the quick educations. Keep it up.
saw you commented on another page... im lookin to start this myself and i look forward to watchin all your vids and gaining knowledge.

thanks catspit i took a course at the vo tech in my town were i learned how to build my own screens and apply the emulsion and image just like you described i was never able to find work in a shop which bummed me out but i still enjoy doing it recreationally
First video and a lot has changed sence then. But you where still a great teacher.

I'm going through all sorts of videos, working in a screenprinting factory soon but wasn't told wtf kind of machines I'm working with lol.
Thought I'd study up.
Thanks for the video, very informative. With the collection of videos I've watched I have a good idea of what I'm doing with a few "Why" questions which are irrelevant atm

Thank you very much! I appreciate you letting me know you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you have a cool process to get graphics onto board type sports equipment. Many skate boarders may like to hear about your methods. I would try using a higher mesh count on rice paper like 230. You may even go higher depending on your artwork and inks. Thanks for watching & commenting!
@meddefecca Yes, very true. The artwork will show as a latent image which will appear lighter or a different shade from the rest of the cured emulsion. Uncured emulsion is water soluble, so wetting the screen down and letting it stand for a minute before you start washing out should help make the stencil come out easier. Thanks for your input! I appreciate your support.
real good and simple explenation of screen printing Thanks , i will have to watch all of your videos theacher :)
@rootvalue Thank you! You’re welcome, it’s my pleasure to help out and share information. Nice comment. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
How cool is it that you are willing to share this info for free!?! You guys are awesome! Kudos from Daisy @ Hazzard County Graphics!
Awsome presentation of a great subject. Best I've seen. I've got loads of questions heading your way now!
@amildionisio No problem, it’s my pleasure to help out. I think I would recommend using at least a 500 watt work lamp if you are not going to use industrial black light bulbs. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Finally I found this useful video! Thanks you .
Excellent, you're welcome. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
@jadedupe Yes, I do. It helps with emulsion to mesh adhesion as well as providing for a thicker stencil. It should also provide a better coat with less probability for pinholes due to too little emulsion. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
@Rodrigo7770 You can Google it or you can get a 5% discount on one through the Print Supplies page of the Catspit website. Link for the website is on the channel page. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠

best tut ive seen so far. thanks man
thanks a lot. more power to catspit productions. ^^
You’re welcome, my pleasure to help out. There are two common inks used for screen printing textiles. Plastisol and water based. For what you want to do you would use a water based poster ink that will air dry. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

I have a small budget for my High School Art kids but want to purchase a silk-screen set up using emulsion to print original t-shirt designs. It's a small class so maybe I could make my own screens. Do I need to look for a single station with 4 screen holders? Just found your sight today, so I'll check out your other videos!
Hsiao-Ling Gardner You'll need to buy a press with as many print heads as you need colors to print. Check out CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com! Thanks for watching!
;) Nice. Yeah it can depend on what city you’re in. Here in Phoenix there are over 200 screen printing shops printing various items. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
@kidzwithboards You can use a plastisol screenprinting textile ink or a water based textile ink for screen printing. Check out my website for the complete rundown on the process and more! The link is on the channel page. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
@GeneralLee1973 This video is for newbies…LOL. I’m not sure how much simpler or more descriptive I can get. Most all of my videos are intended for beginners. You should be able to learn a lot from them. If you are having trouble, watch the video again and message me with your questions. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you. Thanks for the comment!
That’s quite a bit to answer in a comment. You can learn all this from watching my videos. I’ll be happy to answer more specific questions. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
Thanks for all your awesome videos!
Thanks for sharing us your experience !
@GeneralLee1973 Cool, I’m glad you’re getting some help here. Let me know if I can help out any further. Thanks so much for your support. I appreciate that!
@msacarnell If you mean size, that all depends on the size of the shirt, men’s or ladies, and what you are printing. Normally, I’ll print the same size design for the size shirts you mentioned. Ladies shirts I tend to print a bit smaller of a design. Men’s tend to be as big as possible for the location and design. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
@THENISTIK760 Actually, I do not screen print hats currently. They can be printed on a hat press or you can often find pallets for t shirt presses on which you can print hats. I embroider all my hat jobs. To me, embroidery is the way to go on hats. Thanks for watching & commenting!
Would love to see what you think is more cost effective as far as reclaiming a screen. Spray bottle or using rags. I use a spray bottle but was told by an old school printer rags are better. soaking them. I feel like that's more of a wast but I do use a lot when using a spray bottle.

Thank you! You’re welcome, it’s my pleasure to help out and share information. Check out the Catspit website for a lot more free info on screen printing. Link is on the channel page. I’m working on that. I want to do a series of them. But I am doing one for Superstore right now for their startup kit. I might make it available for purchase as well. But yes, I will do my own Catspit DVD’s as soon as possible. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
There are films made for inkjet and laser printers that will give you o.k. results. Vellums and transparencies tend to be not as opaque as you would ideally want. But you can double them up if your artwork is not too complex.
@lilmzthunda Yes it is. It is very slow when liquid but I work in yellow or red light when handling my emulsion and screens ready to expose. It just eliminates any possibility if “fogging”. Your exposure time will depend on your emulsion, film and light source. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@CatspitProductions thanks for the response, it helped a lot, screen images are better now!,. THANKS! Goodluck, and Keep up the good work.
really good explanation!!!!! radical!
thanks mate!
@kittylover143 I don’t think acrylic paint is good to use for this particular screen printing method. Plastisol inks are used with this process. Check out my website for more great information about screen printing inks. Thanks for watching & commenting!

I do have a source for the ink you need. I would be happy to share it with you. Thanks for watching! Hope to hear from you soon
@amildionisio Thank you! It is the UV light that cures emulsion in an exposure unit. But excessive heat can also cure emulsions. Heat is uncontrollable and will ruin your stencil. Only the UV light should be curing the emulsion with your film positive. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@skatexandxannoy Thank you very much! And you’re welcome, it’s my pleasure to help out and share information. Check out the Catspit website for a lot more free info on screen printing. Link is on the channel page. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
The color of the emulsion is irrelevant. As long as your stencils are good and are registered with one another, then it will be fine. Check out the video about setting up on the press. CZcams wouldnt let me post the URL here so you will have to find it in my videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!
