Hey guys! So this tutorial has been requested left, right and centre haha. I've had requests on pretty much all of my platforms, so I figured I might as well make it for you guys. I am also planning on doing a follow up to this tutorial, showing how to vectorise this style; I just need to make sure I myself am comfortable with the method first since I have done it only once to date.
In this tutorial, I take you through the process I use when creating one of these gritty style lettering pieces, both the physical and digital stages as Im guessing a lot of you wan't to also know how I edit these in photoshop. I hope this video gives you guys some insight into my process and helps you develop your own skills both with the pen and in phptoshop! As always, thanks for watching guys and have a great day!
If you have any questions in regards to hand lettering in general or this video, maybe you didn't understand something I did, feel free to drop a comment below and I will help you out as best I can!

Dude! thank you so much for this. Giving away this information for free is crazy.
That trick of removing the original scanned background with layer options is so cool - thank you for sharing!
yea but it doesnt work for me. if i merge the original layer with an empty layer above it.. it just keeps the white background and nothing happening. i wonder what could i do wrong. it looks so easy here and i was so glad i've finally found a good solution..but it seems like no shortcuts for me..
alright. just so you know.. if you skip the "layer style blend if grey adjustment" thing, it doesnt work... but after i tried that also, it magically started to work. and i'm also high right now, maybe thats part of the problem too.
i like how you go precise with your tutorials. you just earned a subscriber.
Such a great tutorial! Great to see your entire process from start to finish!
This is literally my favorite tutorial that I have done in a WHILE...so helpful. sincerely!
Very detailed and easy to follow tutorial!
Thank you so much for the tutorial, it cures my curiosity on how to create a lettering artwork like this
Cheers!
Thanks for this video, for some of us this is the only place where we can learn this.
This tutorial was amazing. Thank you for making it!!
Thank you sooo much, I finally made it and I love the result!
Inspired me to start hand lettering, after watching a lot of your videos. Being a graphic designer there's always new tools popping up to help with my work but sometimes nothing beats a pen, a bit of paper and hours and hours of practice... Cheers Ste!
Love it. Very helpful. Thank you so much!!
After so many Canadian and American channels, I love hearing a fellow UK Northerner, and delivering such quality videos! Cheers pal!
This is awesome! gotta buy pens like those too. This is actually great for personalized t-shirt printings.. :D u earned my +sub man.
These are fantastic tutorials
Really good tutorial thanks man !
thanks for taking the time to make these, much appreciated bro
Great video! Your walkthrough is very detailed and useful. Thank u so much!
This is wonderful. thank you so so much. I've seen this type of artwork on IG and always wondered how it was done. Amazing!!!
This tutorial is extremely helpful. Thank you so much.
When you merged the "C" and the "l" together it would have been a good idea to select the eraser and just take a soft large brush and click on the part where the "C" wraps around and connects to the "l", and it would have made the gradient between the "C" and "l" completely seamless. Looks great either way. Good job!
Finally, Thanks for posting a tutorial on this!
You're very welcome! :D
Hi man i try to contact you last week through email, but so far I got no answer :/ you still accepting freelancing? Really like your work and want to put it in some designs.
Thank you for this tutorial. Greetings from Turkey.
So good! Thank you for this!
Freakin awesome video! Your work is excellent!
thank you for your awesome tutorials, I've recently just jumped back into Illustrator after 6 years of not touching on it..great inspiration to push me forward to get back into art.
This is amazing. Thank you!
Great tut mate!
Thank you so much I really wanted this !
GREAT TUTORIAL. Thanks a lot!
Looks amazing! By the way, if you hold alt and click between the layers 4 and 3, the layer on top would only apply over the layer under it. (try it and you'll understand what i mean) I think it's a bit easier and quickier
This is amazing! Thank you so much!
Just what I was looking for! Thanks!!
Great Tutorial!
I absolutely Love your explanations and I wanna say Thank You Very much 💋😍
thank you! You're stuff is awesome.
Thanks for this tutorial Stephen!
You're welcome :D
Doesn't like as complicated as I thought it was gonna be. Thanks!
Great tutorial! I'd work non-destructively though, using adjustment layers and keeping them as smart objects and at 16:30 just Alt-Click between the two layers to automagically clip the top layer :)
Great tutorial, thank you so much!
OMG BESTTTT VIDEO! THANK YOU SO MUCH.
This video is captivating and masterful (apart from the advertising, but artists gotta eat, we get it).
It's such a joy to watch your tutorials, can't wait to give it a go.
awh thank you man, I honestly really appreciate that comment! I thought people would be bitching and crying because of the sponsored ad, so Im glad you understand! :)
Nice tutorial, thank you!
Watching this was just pure delight
Amazing tutorial, thank u so much for sharing such useful information

Shadows = epic. Nice work, SB! :)
This tutorial was so easy to understand! Subscribed bro.
Pretty nice, you got some unique style
Super cool!
Thank You very much!! 👍🏻👍🏻💛💛
Awesome tutorial m8!
Really nice mate.
Thanks for this video dude!
Your videos are awesome! Love your art style too! :D
LOVE IT !
Thank you so much, buddy. This REALLY helped me big time!
This is a great tutorial! I'd love to learn how to do the splash effects around the text on some of your other tutorials. Maybe I just haven't stumbled across the right video yet. Or is it just splatter brushes?
thanks!
Your handwriting is nice.
Thank you . I like it .
Great work man! :)
For limiting the shadows to only show on the type layer, it would be just as easy to just create a clipping mask from the shadows onto the text! Either way, great video! :)
ahh yes! Ive never been one for using clipping masks because I never really understood them that much for some reason, but since recording this video, I have finally took some time to get to understand what they are, and I actually use them now :D You will see in one of my future tutorials where I use a clipping mask for a texture! Thank you for your input and advice though, hopefully it will helps others :)
Yea so you could just hold alt and click the layer below.
I was thinking the same. Maybe it was just a more comprehensive process. Nonetheless, this is a great video and tutorial. Knowing how to keep the brush texture is very useful.
Thank you!
You're welcome! :D
Great stuff
This is amazing
best tutorial ever!! can you make one of how you create the slash/dots background? thanks
that cool!
Thanks man
I really enjoyed with this work brother!
Greetings from India!
I am one of the very old subscriber of you!
Could you please do another video on this kinda lettering tutorial with Oil Painting Brushes instead of brush pen as you showed in this? What do you say?
great buddy we need more and more handlettering tuts bcz there r very rare techer like you :p do take care of your youtube students from time to time my friend plz
+ste bradbury just loved this tutorial man
Don't worry, I got more hand lettering related tutorials planned :)
wow thanks TEACHER i always check your channel for new tutorial (Y)
awesome! :)
you are awesome!
I love your promo!
Thanks!!!!
Really , great video ;)
That's insane !
Amazing work, I would like to know how to put this on a t-shirt
Great tuto. I'm really much more in video rather than photo but I don't know how I can animate things like your intro. I mean on the fondamental concept: Do you have your logo as a picture that you animate with masks or do you really make your logo in after effect?
ssoooo greeattt!!
Hey, great tutorial!
Question: what if paths cross? would it be ideal to use the scissors tool or the shape builder tool?
I'm kinda stuck doing trial and error for now.
Thanks in advance!!
-Edwin
thanks heaps!
Sick !!! I was always wondering how you do the step between the scan and photoshop , that's help me a lot.
Good work man, keep going :)
Do you use a particular scan for this ? Because I've been trying with mine and this is kind of messy , there is too much pixel. :/
Quick shortcut... once you have the pen shape closed up, you can hit Cmd or Ctrl + Return and it makes the selection that way.
I've been using photoshop for years and never even noticed the 'Blend If' section. That just blew my mind! Haha!
Set Sail ditto!
love the intro can u do a tutorial on that ?
You're voice is amazing 😍😂 Why can't my voice be as soothing as this?
єllє g. Ahha thanks! I'm flattered ahah I thought my voice sounded monotone in these videos 😂 it's always weird listening to your own voice haha!
Ste Bradbury Design Loll nooo I love your voice 😂 I could literally listen to it all day 😌
nice tutorial! how about making some content about yourself, youre story, how do you got to lettering and how you progressed in it? i think we'd like to see that :)
(sorry for my englisch im swiss^^)
Great video!
I just wondering where did you get your intro done? Did you create it yourself and if so what software did you use?
If you were to vectorize this(to be able to size it up and down without quality degredation) How would you trace this perfectly as it is without compromise? Making it into a vector
Good! use adobe illustrator for better results.
You should blend the "C" to "larity" with a layer mask and a soft brush before you merge them. After you merged the two layers you can still clearly see where one layer ends and the other one begins.
Pay attention that a +r combo looks like O bcuz of that huge curve for someone first time see that he will struggle to know
Depending on what you choose the size of the document ?
thanks!!!
I'd like to know how you apply that grunge texture and splashes I saw on this video thumbnail and "Handlettering Monoline" either
