A wise diesel before he was scrapped said this “We all thought we would last forever as long as we could function. But the men in the workshops are always working to improve old designs or to make new ones, and sometimes they come up with something that meets all their expectations, making the old designs obsolete. And when they’ve become obsolete they are thrown away. It doesn’t matter if it’s steam or diesel. If there is something better than them, then there is no need to keep them around.
Wow! First time I've seen a BNSF funeral train in my life. We had a NS funeral train pass down here via Columbus, Ohio sometime last year. Those locos ended up getting scraped and destroyed.
Seeing those locomotives feels just as eerie as seeing images of steam locomotives being sent to scrap yards as you know there's a good chance of the locomotives being scrapped.
Those C40-8Ws should be used as updated local freight service engines to shuttle trains between yards or as yard units where you don't have remote control locomotives.
I do not understand RR but Management they will Sell or Scrap 15-20 year old units but keep other ones 50 years. BN is a prime example they kept SD9's around for 50 years but were scrapping 15 year old SD45's and F45's. I know they were thirsty and could break crankshafts but Wisconsin Central figured that out and derated the HP to 3300 and that solved the crankshaft problem and then picked up a bunch of former BN and SF units for a bargain basement price and got at least 10 more years out of them. There is a video on youtube called switching Pilson (Pilsen) shot in Chicago with an absolutely immaculate GP39-2 BNSF unit that even though it was 50 years old looked liked it rolled out of EMD yesterday It is a rebuilt GP30 with the same carbody.
All depends on the work required of them. Little EMD's are excellent for shortline and industrial sidings and are endlessly rebuildable, so it always ends up being cheaper to refurb them than buy new, also to replace them there's nothing on the market to really replace them. The mainline GE's have crankcase problems with fatigue cracks in the 4000hp models like the dash 8's and 9's that show themselves after about 20-25 years, so they're really only good for one or two refurbs in their life before they need a new engine, where as EMD's with their welded engine blocks can be cut and welded wherever they break, which is waaaay more affordable than going to the manufacturer for a new block. It is possible to refurb older dash 8's and 9's but the RR's consider it not worth the cost so dump them as trade ins. Shame, they're good machines if you drop a new cast engine into them they will give another 20-30 years of life which they're doing to the dash 9's in Australia. GEVO's have a welded engine block like EMD's so it'll be interesting to see how long a life they have
Pretty sure only two locomotives at the front and maybe two in the back (or Del are being used to power while the rest are the freight being sent back to assemble new cargo.
Why are there so many engines being retired it seems that they should have a longer service life look at them the paint isn't even faded on most them. It is hard to believe that the cost of replacement is worth the potential savings of new equipment
@@scottford8736 Yep, they're called Dash 8s. The 8 meaning that they were originally designed in the 1980s. These ones came with wide cabs, which were only offered from 1989 to the end of the Dash 8's production in 1994.

All those units are ex-Santa Fe Dash-8 40CW’s with the Gull-wing cabs not Dash-9, look at the trucks. The BNSF will never be the class act the Santa Fe was no matter how hard they try. Long live the Warbonnets of the Santa Fe!!! Warren you can’t by them all so may the pumpkin orange become black and white of NS the sooner the better.
Ill buy all those locos from u, BNSF...for 1 Silver coin. Why? Like to start a Minnesota transportation Co. (State Amtrac) or inter-state travel transpo for Native Americans
That's what I don't get. Yes, they are DC, but they weren't that different than the Dash-9 series, which were also DC and you still see lots of them on the rails. I guess it is just cheaper to throw them away for scrap or sell them off vs retrofitting them with modern electronics.

What an incredible video, may they all rest in peace, and long live the Dash 9's!
I remember when the 800 class units were new! GE's paint never held up like EMDs. You can bet they've all got millions of miles on them.

most of these C40-8W's are now on the CN Roster
Cuz CN is broke so they have no choice lol
These aren't the ones CN aquired about a decade ago. This is the other half that were kept in service until now.
@@gp60 They are to good to be scrapped !

@@ojsefg thank you
That was a Funeral train I saw 5 NS SD60s Funeral train on CSX Q582-23 today
Excellent catch! So much fun so little understand.
Look at all that Horse Power and the millions of miles of service to our Nation!
Just a bit of description correction, all of them are Santa Fe engines awaiting scrap, the first 2 and last 2 are just supplying power to the train.
Nice catch, Oh god, the devil has taken the lead for this funeral train (because of #6666). #SaveTheWarbonnets!
They didn’t had to do ‘em like that!!
well at least its not tripple 6
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA YO SO RELATABLE
No #Savetrainsderailingbysatanspower
Belíssimo flagrante, uma captura espetacular demais, apesar de estarem sendo baixadas seu registro foi espetacular 👏💯 like super garantido 👏💯
i was lucky enough to see a -8 serving the CSX today, they seem to be a thin population amongst the ES44ACs
R.I.P. Amtrak 156
It’s just sad to see all those dash 9’s go I’ve seen a lot of them Awesome Catch! Great Video!!
Dash 8s
Ótimo vídeo! é triste mas é o destino de todas as locomotivas que trabalharam por anos.
theres gonna be a day where we say goodbye to things like the ES44AC and miss them
Nice vid there was a funeral train with freight cars the day after it came
“Dont cry because it’s gone, smile because it happened”
How appropriate for the devil's locomotive to lead.
Brian H the es44?
Northwest Tennessee Railfan The number on the es44 is 6666. The number means the devils number.
xGold ah I see
Amazing.
WOW....Look at ALL the engines pointing East being returned to the West Coast so they can start a new Loaded consist back to the East coast!!!!!
They are unfortunately in Galveston waiting to be cut up for scrap

Awesome video! Just subscribed!
I saw, and filmed, the second time Amtrak did this. Awesome catches bro! By the way, the description needs to be fixed (130 not 160).
I’m sure CN will pick these up for spare parts for their fleet
Probably will or maybe prlx or gecx would like to retrieve some units
@@SnowSniper678 PRLX is progress rail leasing so PRLX is for EMD and GECX is for GE
