The NASCAR Cup Series returned to action after the Olympic break at Richmond and the race didn't disappoint. The option (soft) and prime (hard) tires took center stage for much of the race as the differing tire strategies allowed the drivers to pass and move through the field at an incredible rate.
But the main story happened on the final lap when Austin Dillon wrecked both Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin for the win. Listen to the full unedited team radios, including how the Richard Childress Racing team told its driver to do whatever he needed to do, including wreck his competition.
Kevin Harvick offered up his opinion on NBC's coverage of the Richmond race weekend and didn't sugarcoat his thoughts about one particular portion and how it was frustrating for him and other fans.
Ty Gibbs was the lone Joe Gibbs Racing car that didn't run well from the start of the race and he let his team know about it throughout the race.
Plus, Denny Hamlin talks about if motorsports should be a future Olympic event.
And enter to win more than $1000 worth of NASCAR memorabilia in our Christmas in August celebration.

I'm tired of CZcamsrs repeating, "Logano did the same thing to Byron". No he didn't do "the same thing". Byron ran Logano into the wall at Darlington so when Joey caught him, he hit him. That was 100% payback. Logano passed Dillon because he's one of the best at restarts in the sport. There's a big difference between payback, and desperation slam and runs. I'm not even a Logano fan. I'm not a fan of any particular driver anymore as mine retired years ago (Mark Martin). It just amazes me how peoples opinions of racing incidents changes dependent on who's involved.

It’s just the WWE element of racing entertainment turning the sport into a joke. People watch their favorite driver lead the procession for 400 miles and think they just watched a race. The networks spend far too much energy trying to highlight the drama and zero effort on covering the battles happening outside the top ten. Little by little real race fans will tune out and all that will be left is this garbage where we hear about somebody’s personal life and watch them pretend to wanna fight after the race is over.
They’ve always missed on opportunities to make the show about the cars and the engineering. I wanna know for example how Toyota absolutely dominated the other manufacturers on handling for nearly a decade…That would interest me…but they’re selling a damn reality show at this point.

You're absolutely right I have been thinking the same thing they're going by what fans are saying. when Nascar starts letting fans dictate what's happening in the sport That's a bad idea fans are biased towards other drivers. It needs to be a neutral group of people to get an accurate opinion on incidents like that.

@@V4-VFR there's no doubt a lot of truth to that. Although NASCAR made the decision to review ALL of the video and audio from those involved, they most likely would not have done it if these WWE fans weren't making a big scene about it. NASCAR cares more about ratings than they do about the sport itself. They proved that over 20 years ago when they decided to make a playoff system after the NFL and the NBA had some of the best years in viewer ratings.
If they would've left it alone and ran on the old points system, them Jeff Gordon would be a 7 time champion, and Jimmie Johnson a 5 time champion. Hamlin would be a champion and Carl Edwards as well. I have the data and a list of all the drivers who would've gotten championships from 2000 to current.

Take out Logano & Hamlin as the drivers who got wrecked & replace them with anyone else - don't focus on WHO Dillon wrecked, just the fact that he intentionally WRECKED not one but TWO cars in order to win. Should that be considered 'ok"? Hell no. Yeah, he had one of the Top 2 or 3 cars in the race. Yeah, without the caution, he shoulda, coulda, woulda won. But because he completely (by his own admission) screwed up the restart, he was going to loose.....again.....going on 2 years now..... in front of their biggest sponsor & way outside the points battle. So he chickenshitted his way in. What he did to Logano has been done before, but NASCAR has come down on the "right hook' thing due to safety concerns. He INTENTIONALLY hooked the 11 (caused injury) - if NASCAR doesn't come down hard on him, then there goes any chance at "gentleman racing" & it becomes a free-for-all. Sad....

I don't think "deserving" comes to mind when the people signing your paychecks says you gotta make the playoffs, no matter what. I can't imagine the pressure the drivers are under to perform and you have split seconds to make decisions on the track and people in your ear so it's not like you have a large amount of time to consult your personal morale decisions over the race and all of your team riding on your ability to win. No second chances, no time to think. Just do. I'd like to say I would never do that move but who knows what we don't know. I've never been a driver, I just play one in iracing. 😅

Bump n Run...please everyone needs to stop saying that's what it was. The Bump n Run is moving someone without wrecking them ala the master Jeff Gordon. What Dillon did, what Dale Sr. did to Terry was intentionally wrecking someone for the win. It takes alot of talent to move someone without wrecking them out of the race. As for Nascar actually doing something logical is ridiculous as that crew is like a bunch of monkeys humping a door knob.

So is wrecking 1 car intentionally ok? Why is internationally wrecking one car ok but two is too much? Do we actually want NASCAR deciding “the line” when they can’t properly and consistently enforce the current yellow line rule at super speedways? I actually think the only thing new we saw on Sunday night was how someone intentionally wrecked another driver to advance in the championship race.
Newman showed it was ok to not attempt to make the corner and just door slam another driver into the wall to advance 10 years ago. Harvick showed it was ok to wreck a dozen cars at talladega to advance a year after that. Ty Gibbs showed it was ok to just wreck your teammate and be an ass for no reason a few years ago so clearly there’s nothing in the rules that says intentionally wrecking someone is ok to advance in the championship.
Something like this has been a long time coming and it just needed a desperate driver and team who needed a win to keep the organization going. I don’t think AD cares what anyone thinks besides the RCR organization and his team just saw him do whatever it takes to win when they have been at their worst.

Logano and Hamlin can accept the "bump and run", and have employed it themselves to achieve victory. However, they are not big fans of the "smash and grab" or the "hook and by crook" tactics that Austin Dillon used at Richmond. Dillon had the race legitimately won until that caution in the final 2 laps. I knew he was in big trouble on that final restart, given how good Logano is in those situations. Dillon rescued victory from the jaws of defeat, but at what price in terms of his and RCR's reputation and the inevitable "payback" that is coming.

This is what NASCAR wanted. They have promoted the "I would wreck my grandmother". They will promote this next year and maybe this year for the chase. It is not anything new. It is the degree which was different. We have seen Denny and Joey wreck someone for the win. How do you codify it is OK to wreck this way, but not this other way. It was not against the rules. It makes the better show for entertainment. Sacrificing racing for entertainment is not new. They are trying to get more viewers. This will help that. Unfortunately drivers are expendable. Just ask Kurt. The bumper car build ended his career. It allows the car to be used as a weapon and NASCAR allows that until it get too obvious. What rule should they adopt about wrecks. I saw Denny coming up as Austin was straightening out to go to the line. I am sure many pointed out the times Logano has done the same thing. Heck even Ross wrecked a couple people (although they finished). Is this different because it is Austin? As a fan watching, I do not see anything new. Wreck to make the playoff. Maybe they will make a new rule like they did for the melon move to get in the payoffs. But what rule are you going to make for this? Denny saw wwhat was there as he came up off the line. Cars hold other cars tight exiting turns all the time on purpose. Please explain why this was diffferent? Was it the result that made it different from all the other times?

I still think the 22 jumped the restart. I was okay with the 3 trying the bump and run on the 22. I also think he could have raced the 11 a little better. But that is in Monday quarterbacking. IN the moment he did what he had to in this to get the win. NASCAR is who has set this up. They can't take the win away. This is an all-in sport. Win and you're in. If they waited for the 3 to cross the line for the white flag. They wouldn't have this great finish to a very boring race. This is why they put the green, white, checkered in racing to get these kinds of finishes. You cannot punish drivers for doing what you want them to do!!!!! It is all about getting the fans to watch. That is the game in todays NASCAR at the end of the race. Restart, restart, restart. If you survive, you finish ahead of those that don't.

Dillon will be suspended for one race for 3 infractions at the end of the race. I will explain what they are. Denny Hamlin was credited with second place, which means Dillon wrecked Hamlin under caution, after the race was over. Nascar has handed down penalties for breaking these rules all year and Dillon has three offenses which likely means 3 strikes you are out.
    Offenses
    1. Wrecking someone under caution
    2. Wrecking someone after the race was over
    3. Rough driving, intentionak contact with the right rear.
I qas rooting for Dillon the entire race and when you talk about the system, the GWC finish in this instance is worse then the win at all costs system. Especially when the final caution setting up the GWC was caused by two lapped cars who have no business getting into each other with two laps left and was likely on purpose. I did not used to like Dillon but im glad he is done buying cowboy hats and making reality tv shows and finally focusing on work

Or is it the engine, which is also typically a 20-30th place engine,....with, well, a driver who SHOULD be running the RCR shop at the MOST, not driving. I don't think its ALL tire. Teams are smart enough to "use" the idea of a soft tire,...to mask something else.
