The Best Method to repair Fords Ranger Door Lock Cable by replacing the plastic ends with CNC Machined Aluminum ends--that will outlive your vehicle. www.ebay.com/it...
Mr. Klamm, today 07/29/2020 I finished a project. Several years ago I had the problem with the cables on my 2001 Mazda B3000. I purchased the parts you make and sell. I don’t use the truck as much so I kept putting off the repairs. Well today I started and finished the project. Your parts are perfect. Thanks for making his instructional video.
Great product, worked perfectly. Please note, you get four ends per door, three are the same, one is modified, the modified end goes in the top latch, you do not have to disassemble the latch to install. The end just rotates into position. Also, check the top latch end once you have installed the door handle and everything is in place, I noticed that the end had rotated back out of position due to the cables twisting during handle install. Once everything is in place,Rotate the cable end back into place and gently squeeze with pliers to hold in place and you will be good to go to put the door panel back on.
Thank you! I have been looking and trying to find a video that shows the top latch. This video would have been great if it didn't just skip over the top latch. Thanks for the info!
Exactly the instructions I needed to repair my door. I had the aluminum parts but did not know how to proceed. Your video answered all the questions. Thank you
Hey George! Just installed cable ends! Awesome work on your part to figure that out! Installation was a breeze. Thanks again. Missed having those doors in operation! LOL Greg Sutton
Just ordered 2 from you, both my doors broke a week apart. Had to support the company who took the time to make a video to show how to do it and what size socket/rivet needed.
I just finished the project. I had a hell ofh a time putting the pins back into the door handle. No slack to work with. Found that if I did not put the new pieces on the handle until after I had the connection with the handle in it was easier. It still took many tries. I think the cables were a fraction short. I know one was, because we had to shave some plastic off to get a little more slack.
Awsome product!....Anyone with a Ford Ranger Supercab(4dr) either needs this,or WILL need it;The 'stealership' wants $149 per cable(x4 =$596!),because the cable & latch are sold together(figures!).....You sir are a genius!;I wish you much success, and plan on telling anyone I can about your product.
Thanks to your video I just ordered a kit off of eBay Ford Ranger Back Door Handle Latch Cable Repair Kit 8 ends fix 2 door trucks. In my head I was thinking of a way to design some sort of sleeve that almost looked like what I ordered so to give props to the inventor who designed it before me...I ordered a set! Thanks for the video! I tried your link but $38 was way higher than I wanted to pay and found a set of 8 for just under $10
Good video. I own an automotive repair shop that specializes in Honda repair. I ran across this while video looking for the repair kit for a 99 Ford Ranger. You do not have to remove the door handle to repair the cable
The design, engineering and manufacturing of this product is outstanding. The cable sheath ends of the OEM product are made of hardened rubber that disintegrates over time...these are made of aluminum and will last longer than the vehicle. What's more, there is no additional work involved to install this product than installing the OEM part which is sold only as an assembly at a much higher price. You won't be disappointed.
I've been pleased with mine for over 2 years.........Friggin Ford using rubber for the cable ends!.....Theres a reason why motorcycles and even bicycles have been using metal ends for about 100 years, becuase they don't disitegrate!
I just completed this process in my driver side access door. It wasn't TOO bad but still not fun, lol. I used a knife rather than sandpaper to skin the plastic cable housing to allow the metal pieces to slide onto the cable. I almost had a real problem when I decided to "test" the latch by manually actuating the door latch with a screwdriver. When i did this all seemed well until I closed the door itself and the bottom latch would NOT close. The top latch was fine but the bottom would not close. What happened was that the latch did not fully open back up all the way by simply pulling the door handle. I had to take a screwdriver and snatch it open all the way to allow the door to close on the bottom. So just be careful and be aware of this if you decide to test it manually without actually closing the door!
Thanks, worked great for 2003 ford ranger but had minor problems like stripped bolt and broken plastic doohickeys that hold door panel.Bought kit for 25.00! Came with 4 so I have 2 extra for other side when it goes.Didn't have to do lower latch. It was a bit tricky pulling cable through door handle and connecting it properly.Celebrated with a brew. :)
Thank you. I got the kit and repaired the door yesterday. One thing: you did not show repairing the upper inside latch in the video. The kit has 3 aluminum-ends of one shape and 1 that is slightly different. I have not found any mention of that, so we did not notice the odd one until after putting the upper latch in a vise and bending the opening to get the cable end in. We then used the odd end on the bottom, which is not correct, but it works. Maybe it's just me, but it would have been nice to see something about that in the video and or the paper instructions in the kit.
Yes! The one latch I have questions about and he just skips right over it. I have them all put in but the top. I know it goes in without taking it all apart but for the life of haven't figured it out yet but I will lol
For those who have trouble getting the Ranger doors open please note that the cables cris/cross . The cable that attaches to the upper position on the door handle operates the lower latch. and the lower position on the handle operates the upper latch. Klammauto
Could not open the rear door on my 03' Ranger. The cables on the door latch seemed okay. Found a small opening on bottom front side of door and sprayed it full of WD40. Yanked on it a few times and it popped open!
overall a good video,a must watch before starting this project!!!! but does over look a couple key situations that ended up taking some time especially on the first handle. the main missed point is reconnecting the cables to the handle. look to see how the cables connect inside the handle that way you get an idea of how to do it. b'c once trying to connect its very hard to see what needs to be done. my steps: --i connected both cables to the handle (can be a tricky, need good finger movement), then locked down the metal ends with the clips and then work the handle into position on the door (test!!!) and then riveted into place. took me a couple of hours to do both doors, second door was much faster, of course.... taking off the freaking interior panel wasn't pleasant either....definitely worth doing yourself.. can't imagine how much if paying someone..
I bought your kit, but can't open the door to start working on it. My cable broke down at the bottom latch. How can I access that bottom latch to release it? Is it possible to remove the door panel when the door is closed? Otherwise, I can't access the lower latch t release it. Thanks
When drilling the rivets out DON'T use anything larger than a 3/16" drill bit as this is the diameter of the hole in the door frame behind the rivet and you will enlarge that hole making a 3/16" rivet loose. I was able to replace the upper cable end without removing the latch.
Bought a set of 8 on Amazon. Had a real problem sliding them over the old cable even after considerable sanding. the opening seems too small. I guess I may try running a drill bit through them before I do the other side.
The video is okay but he stated that the cables ends we're broken at the latch, therefore it might not be necessary to take any parts off from the interior of the door. I had the same issue with my Ranger rear door and only dismantled the door latch and then replaced the ends as noted. Total time for job was 25 minutes. If the top and bottom of cables break in the future then that's a separate issue. And yes my rear door latch was fixed and opened just like new... Wow! 25 minutes and less than 10 bucks for the parts.
My problem is that the door won't open at all even when pulling on the bottom latch cable. I can manage to pull the panel off with the door closed but from there I noticed that the cable slipped out of the latch and it just pulls freely on nothing.
+Tommy Sadler What you are going to have to do is what I call GO FISHING . Fabricate a small hook out of a welding rod or coat hanger by bending a sharp 90 Deg. angle , then trim the wire so that the hook is only about 3/16 In.long . Work it into the latch and fish for the socket that the cable attaches to and pull to release the latch.
I hope you guys are still answering questions. I just ordered a set of these ends for my 2002 Ranger. Question is, what if the 1 or more of the end are not broken. Do they slide off? What is the procedure for this. I hate to go into the door only to fix 1 end and hope the others last longer than I plan on keeping the truck! LOL
If one of the old ones isn't broken, it doesn't slide off to remove it like the new one you are about to replace would. You have to pull the back retaining clip, and disconnect the cable from the door handle once free, with the help of pliers crush it, it should crumble into pieces. make sure the cable or the cable sleeve doesn't get damaged. now you can replace it with the new aluminum one.
@@emiliotamayo3256 your video only shows the part about reattaching the clips to the door handle. Of course you wouldn't have to remove the door panel for that work. Plus you suggest using an angle grinder, which turned out to be overkill and it bit you. But the video clarity of your video is great!
Finally an old guy that knows how to use a tool . These young kids with THIER keyboard fingers, can't use a ratchet for shit. I guess that is because we grew up fixing things, from our first bicycle to the truck/car we drive today.and they grew up typing everything. When I was in school we also had BULLIES that beat up the kids that took typing. I guess there are PRO's and CON's to everything. Thanks for the video and the website to buy them. I love my little ranger, not ready to retire it yet. The new ones look like Fido' s A$$.
I want to see a way to install the cable back into the upper latch. I noticed you left that out. It is a major booger of a challenge as the upper latch does not come apart to help install the cable end back in place. Its not a pleasant job. Pisses me off.
I did not have as good of luck even with the cables pushed all the way in the replacements it caused the latch to stay activated. I had to cut away part of the cable casing and they are wrapped steel not very fun.
If the actual cable/wire is broken you might try a salvage yard(like Pull-A-Part),or a bicycle or motorcycle repair shop, because Ford will NOT sell just the cables by themselves(Ford makes you buy the cables & latch as one unit,so they can charge $$$).....This item (Ebay Item#321285543844) is to replace the rubber cable ends when they have broken(disintegrated!).......I did both of my Ranger's Supercab doors over 2 years ago,and they are awsesome.......See my other comment.
I really like your door lock cable repair but I am having difficulty re-attaching the cables to the door handle. Is there some kind of secret way to do this. Your video does not show this procedure. Could you provide an answer on how to install the cables.
+Terry Camerrer With the door handle housing in hand ,and the sliding retainers retracted . Insert the cables with the replacement ends installed into the door handle housing, push it through so that it protrudes to the outside , this allows enough slack in the cable to install the barrel shaped terminals into the door handle, Pull back on cable housing and align the slot on replacement end with sliding retainer and slide it into place . Reinstall the door handle assembly into the door and pop rivet it in place
Exactly! The more times I watch this video the more it ticks me off. He, or his inpet camera person, glosses over some key details and this task is exactly about the small little details, not looking at the guys face while he talks!
Mr. video mechanic, you did not put back in place the upper door replace cable end inside the latch and that move is the more difficult part of the job because must of the time takes hours to finish back in place and you are lucky if you do no brake the inside spring which is very sensitive and if you do it then prepare yourself to buy a new one $125.00
+fernando arzola IT is not necessary to remove the cable from the upper latch , you simply remove the fragments of the original plastic cable end , while leaving the cable attached to the latch, smooth the burrs from the cable housing with some emery cloth , then install the the modified cable end that is included in our kit, that attaches the cable to your upper latch, by inserting it straight in and then rotating so that the tab on the replacement end secures the cable end into the latch I hope this information is helpful GK

I had my drivers side fail last week, but the repair parts you're suggesting won't work, well one anyway but I did find the correct ones.
Greta video and it helped very much but you did not explain how to replace the upper cable latch? I could not figure it out!
