Relentless: How Paul Newman Became Paul Newman

  • Call it tenacity, persistence, determination, or perseverance, but Paul Newman was a relentless person.
    Newman was born on January 26, 1925 in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
    Around the age of 7, his mother encouraged him to pursue the arts, where he landed the role of a court gesture in a school play.
    From a very early age, he was known for being handsome, but seemed unaffected by the attention he received.
    Newman developed charisma very early as well, using it on and off stage, but also to help him sell encyclopedias door to door.
    His pursuit to a creative career came after college. While in Officer Training, he learned he was colorblind and couldn’t pursue his goal of becoming a pilot.
    Instead, he became a radio operator, then went back to school at Kenyon College. There, he started playing football and was arrested with some teammates for a bar fight.
    Early in life, Newman married and had a son named Scott. Around this same time, he also sold his father’s family business and went to Yale to pursue a career as a Director.
    Newman didn’t originally want to be an actor, but he was noticed at Yale and 6 months later, some agents invited him to New York.
