  • Hi!
    Today we're going to try to cold start this 1986 Peugeot 505 Turbo Diesel! These cars are known to be a "bit" cold-blooded for the Canadian North; not many survive around here today. Cold War Motors just picked up this 5 speed car last week; it had been sitting outside for years and it needs a basic cosmetic redo. I hope to fix up this sweet French cruiser next summer, but I wanted to do a Cold Start for you all first!
    Thank you all for watching and subscribing! Lots more old clunker mayhem to come!

    Thanks for the video, my cousin had a 504 diesel and after driving it I was hooked hard. Had an '82 505s, the gas version...so many decades later I still miss her, it was like driving on air. They were build with that old WWII scrap metal which was a rust magnet in Florida. That 80's styling era of the Mercedes, BMW and Peugeot...such grand dames. Never once had it in the shop, but oil changes were a pain without that tool! So far ahead of their time with that big V4. Who knew that would have become such a standard which is evolving to battery vehicles. Lets give a shout out to Lotus, too, for that same vision.

      @@peterlonter9053 They pulled out of the US long ago, I'd love to have one again but the 505 was a rust magnet, the repair to the area around the windshield was more than the car's value...but she was the smoothest ride I'd ever owned to date.

    One of the best diesel engines ever! Seen a few 205, 309, 306, 405 diesel Peugeot engines with well over 500, 000 miles and still going strong. Highest I have ever seen was 657,000 miles in a 306 diesel..... Meant to be a 405 diesel in the UK with over a million miles on original engine.

    • @19jacobob93
      @19jacobob93 Před měsícem +2

      PSA diesels have always been top notch! We had a 306 1.9 D turbo and I have a 308 2.0 HDi daily beater. The 2.0 HDi that's still in production has an almost identical core (block, crank etc.) to the old XUD, which in turn can trace its design back further. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! They basically just added a 16V head and beefed up rods, then unfortunately emissions devices in the more recent variants.

    It is right that the IDI engines can be temperamental in the cold, but with good maintenance and decent glow plugs they'll start fairly easily. Easier than an old petrol/gas carburetor that's for sure!

    I was just kidding around. I thought that was obvious. I own 8 French cars and half of them are diesels. They start pretty well, considering. They earned a bad reputation in Canada because the weather here gets extremely cold, and they wouldn't start even when they were new without some modifications, which this car has. My friend was the Peugeot dealer here in the 80's, and he even said they were hard to start. They are lovely cars to drive; that's why I bought one.

    It's like diesel in North America wich always had a "bad reputation".
    Just because peoples didn't know how to use and maintain them.
    Using starting fluid and killing them while they needed new glowplugs for ex.
    All the cars have block heaters in cold countries even US brands.
    I don't understand why this brand have a bad reputation because it do not start when extremely cold while it's the same for the others.

    You are Wright about the 505 BUT when they replaced that engine with the 1.9 either n/a or TD the are amazing starters. I've had loads of em. My old van struggled once when it was -15 so I thought it must have a glow plug down, nope all gone. It still started fine it was just a bit knocky for a second. Changed plugs and first flick every time. Still have a 1.9 now and I'm not in the slightest bit worried about cold stars.

      VW diesels are garbage compared to Peugeot diesels...it's why Peugeot is the number 1 selling light-duty diesel in the world used/installed in multiple applications beyond their cars, but used by other car makers as well. Wanna 2018 F-150 HDI twin-turbo diesel? It's a Peugeot....Ford knows not to install a junky vw diesel in their pickup. Wanna small diesel for your: home,in a ship,etc. ? Peugeot...although never inexpensive...you'll find them everywhere. Wanna G-Wagon or the BMW equivalent with a Diesel? Peugeot is on the option list. And the Pushrod Indenor Diesel is so rugged....BMW manufactures it (2.5 litre) under Royalty-License from Peugeot...that is very present. That's the same 2.5 version that was used in boats,ships,hooked up to generators, 505s, 604s, Fords,etc. in straight or turbo diesel form...with or without an inter-cooler.

  • @coldwarmotors
    @coldwarmotors  Před 11 lety +1

    The biggest issue was batteries without enough power on really cold days to crank the engine and run the glow plugs at the same time. Scarce dealers and unfamiliarity with diesels compounded the problem. Maintenance prevented these problems, as you said. However, a domestic, carburetted gasoline car would start at -30, without being plugged in or maintained AT ALL for years and years. Hence the "hard starting" reputation; it's just relative. Nothing wrong with the engine, they are very tough.

  • @TylersNeighborhoodGarage

The 505 is an exceptional car, with superb ergonomics & classic (Pininfarina) good looks. The gassers start well in the cold. Though not precision built-like Japanese cars, the Pugs are tough as tanks, very reliable and extremely competent on the road. The wagons carry 1/2 a ton/37 bankers boxes. They aren't perfect but I haven't been able to find a worthy replacement.

Repeat the process three times it will start after a few turns of the engine and some start straight away. You will save your battery from going flat too! Hope this helps?

    it's an IDI engine you have to maintain the preheating system in good shape.
    I know Canada and US owners have tons of stories about europeans european diesel from 70 80's but it's just because they didn't know how to maintain and use them properly.
    You should take a look at the actual powerstroke engines and all he problems they have.

    Maybe it's just my computer having a bad day (it's about as old as this video), but I had a blast trying to keep up with and understand some of the gibberish that the CC spit out. I first had to switch them from Dutch to English, but it was just as bad, in a funny way :p
