What a knockout! I would proudly display the '56 Packard 400, the Caribbean, and the Executive Models in the same museum alongside any of the great Classic 50's cars, 60's and early 70's Muscle Cars , etc. . I love this 400 in the Scottish Heather. So classic 50's.

My dad owned one and it broke his heart to sell it, no one could maintain the push button transmission. I drove it occasionally and you could tell it was solid and well built.

    So much to say.
Wanted a 55 400 since I was fourteen. Well balanced, big grin, nice dagmars and restrained styling especially compared to a 55 coupe DeVille.
In 1979 someone in Michigan named truex owned a 55 400 and valued it at 10.000. God knows what it's worth today.
    55 has a 352 56 had a 374 4 bbl.
I don't know if the two speed ultramatic is any good but I do know Studebaker Nash and hudson all used it.
Yes dick teague was a genius.
Had Packard survived it would likely have looked like the edsel-esque predictor show car.
Torsion level suspension uses long links to connect front and rear wheels. Later copied by Mopar as torsion Aire.
Joe ligo reviewed a beautiful patrician which is the same car as a four door.
56 Caribbean is also prized and is horribly expensive.
Ask the man who owns one.

A distinctly styled car, a fine model of the Packard line. They strove to be the best, and that's evident here.😊

We can only wish. A few years ago there was a project underway but the finances and the market caused the owners to stop development.
Recently I saw reviews of the 2021 Bentley Flying Spur and thought that if everything went right in the 1950s the new Flying Spur would be the new Packard.

It's a shame that America couldn't accept having another car company competing with the Big 3. It would have been nice to see what Packard would have developed over the years. They were truly works of automotive art.

Without question the 56 Senior Packard was the best looking car of the Fifties. We should also note the Executive, which used the Senior front end on the Clipper body and chassis. Shows that Clippers and Packards were designed to have interchangeable parts...

Packard produced 3,224 1956 Packard 400 2-door hardtops in Detroit before ending production in mid-August 1956. The 400 was part of Packard's senior model range and was built by the Studebaker-Packard Corp. of South Bend, Indiana during the 1955 and 1956 model years. The 400's updated appearance and forward technologies made it a popular executive car, and its short production run of only two years makes it a relatively rare car.

Packard would have probably survived a lot longer had they never purchased Studebaker. Studebaker was a mess. The real tragedy here is that the Packard V8 that was in the 55/56 cars was probably the most advanced V8 of any carmaker of the time. It was also designed for a theoretical displacement limit of 500 cubic inches. When they switched to Studebaker platforms for Packards, they also switched to the archaic Studebaker V8 that was limited to around 300 cubic inches.

I have the same. But I painted mine all black. Tinted the rear window. Added dual antennas
Delorean was a junior engineer at packard. He did the trans. And fitted the tl . that's according pi . in one of their catalogs. Back in the 80s. I also added the push button.
My trans i made aluminum bronze. Bushings. And added needle bearing at the tailshsft. And one on the converter. Had one on ball housing put oil leaked cause if pressure. Need a needle bearing with a seal on outer end to keep oil in. But . trans felt. Quicker off the line...
The tl bob Allison is the designer. I think some of it is on you tube.
You also could special order dual quads. For the 400. Which bumped up the hp to 310. From 290. I'm sure its would of came with a Caribbean torque converter. With have a higher torque pump. And then valve bodies would of been different to. Different shift points.
Scottish heather from my view was for the wives.

Hey Mark, nice car. I did not know about "The Four Hundred" I notice yours appears to have the column shift for the transmission. Is that correct? I read that the push button transmission control was technically an option for '56 but that almost all '56s had the pushbutton control. Have you heard of this? I also just read that John Delorean was the engineer for Packard that designed the transmission.

I had to hold my cell phone to my ear to hear it, so I couldn't watch the video at the same time. It's a complete travesty of a video, but what's worse, is this fellow actually does an excellent presenting of the vehicle, appreciating it as it should be! A sad showing of an amazing automobile.
I'm 76, my best friend's father bought a four-door Patrician 400 in 1956: to ride in it was a miraculous experience! At the time Packard had more patents than any other car maker, including the truly revolutionary 'Torsion Aire' suspension. Packard's story is a mini-history of the USA's decline in the 20th c to its present status on the world stage.
