Finally got my Old Glory 305 sbc ready to fire up on the test stand. It sounds rowdy!!

- First fire up and cam break in on my little 305. I installed a Summit Racing 1107 camshaft, high volume oil pump, Comp cams push rods, some "z/28" valve springs, Edelbrock performer intake, headers, and a 750cfm Holley carb.

Cool soundig and very quick accelerating! Yes, many who are ashamed of the 305, it certainly cant get so much HP as a 350 or a big block, but the 305 can also give a good push to these old bodies great, so why not. In Russia, by the way, we cannot nowhere to take a lot of different American engines, so I myself look at your newsletters to see who and what is doing with the 305 to make it more powerful and anger. I really have an olds sedan (Bbody), but its also a heavy too and an engine 305 from the chevy caprice in it. Thank you! Sorry if Im a bad writer, my english is little weak.
P.S. And a cool beard! Me have too! Good luck!
i have built a ass load of 305s ... the key is use a good flowing head and cam with a tight centerline and major duration ... its a little motor and if ya spin it hard it will make power.
CAN some let me know if they can work on my 305 bore 60 Washington DC need mechanic
If you are looking for HP 350 / 400 SBC over a big block proven facts small block 400 can put out more hp and turn more rpms than a big block that's what most of the Old School Drag Racers run 400 small block Chevy with 202 heads same setup I have in my Hotrod
Love the introduction, U.S.A forever.
Thanks
I damn near jumped up and saluted. And I’m an Aussie 🤣🤣👍👌❤️
Awesome!
I have a 305 in my 85 cutlass. It runs good, so i don't wanna get rid of a perfectly good engine. Great tips!!
LS Swap it 😉
I’m working on my 84 Square body and I’m excited to start her back up and hear that 305 she gots under the hood Roar again 🤘🏼
That's always a good moment!!
Doing awesome man I just got an 83 Silverado 305 crammed headers I sound soo good at 70 mph lol 😂 imma keep learning from pros like u !!!
I'm hopefully getting a 85 worh a 305. I've head bad things but a v8 is a v8 imo (Chevy that is)
I love your show brother. I have a 79 C10 with a 350 and an 86 Silverado with a 305 TBI. I just pulled the 305 out and am trying to do something with it to give it some more juice. Everyone says get rid of the 305 but watching what your doing with your 305 keeps me determined to make something with it. 🙂
Thanks. This is the reason I decided to do what I did with this truck.
I’m not ashamed of my 305 with headers & cam thanks to u
Thanks. That's one of the reasons I kept this truck and started doing videos with it. I got tired of people getting bashed for having a 305.
@@SquarebodyStuff I agree man they talk to much smack about the 305
I have a 350, nothing big but I outran a 1980 elco with a 454 2 outa 3 of the times, I'm cammed with roller rocker arms, and pretty much ac delco everything..... never shame yourself just have fun, that's what it's about homestly. If you love what you do and have, who cares about anyone's opinion. I'm about to get the 4150 super sniper efi 2x4 550-553, a different cam maybe the big muther thumpr, a e85 fuel pump and some new heads, lifters and it should make a little difference. Have fun don't shame
I built a 350 and put 305 heads on it with a thumper cam what a performer in my 79 elcamino
Shew that juker gotta move 🛻💨
I did the same years ago, used 305 heads on a 350, it wouldn't rev past 5200 rpm though. Had a comp cams 280h hydraulic cam, Weiand stealth intake, Carter carburetor, it sounded good but not what I wanted for power.
My first car was an 87 Camaro with a 305. Headers 650 carb and a posi kit. I got it for $300 because reverse was out. But someone just forgot to add gear oil to the transmission. I filled it up and it shifted just fine. I drove the shitt out of the car and it still ran like a champ when I sold it for 2,000.
Gotta love the sound of open headers
Especially with the chop chop of a good cam.
Have a 305 in my 85 SS Monte just a mild cam machine work on heads valves. intake manifold and carb headers with flowmasters gearing and a B&M shift kit. And I'm completely satisfied!
My coworkers just looked at me because I stood up and put my hand over my heart
Awesome!!!!!!
I put my hand over my heart too.
@@SquarebodyStuff I hope you installed a 7 or 8 quart oil pan since you installed a high volume oil pump. I made the mistake of installing a high volume oil pump with stock oil pan and the engine developed a knock in bottom end because all the oil was in the top of the engine and not enough in the pan to keep the bottom end lubricated. FYI
It's made over 20 passes at the drag strip with no issues. Several of those were 150 shot nitrous passes and a couple 250 shots.
That’s racist. Can’t love your country anymore. What’s wrong with you?
finally some 305 vids, wish i found this earlyer
Thank you for your 305 videos. To be honest I was pretty bummed when I found out my engine was a 305. But your videos give me hope 🙏
Awesome. They can be fun.
They weigh less … in an fr chassis that means a lot … 350 305 the reall bottleneck is rpm or tire grip
Think I’m stealing your paint scheme for my SBC in my 79 Vette. Love it. Sounds raw. Beautiful job
Steal away my friend. Thanks.
Dream truck...I use to have an 81 with a 4 bolt 350..but always wanted a 78 step... year i was born. Nice truck. GIV`ER HELL!!!
That acceleration is quite nice.. gives me hope for my rv cam tbi 305.
Sounds healthy man....Round my neck of the woods, 305 rules in the derby car world....
Here too. They usually don't make enough powered to hurt themselves. Stand on em wide open and they'll take it.
They also take all the heat in the world and 9 times out of 10 I'd say the 305 will cool off and keep going next time around
@@SquarebodyStuff i beg to differ, That douche bag on engine Masters got 360 hp out of one with a comp 280 cam, single plane intake and 850 carb. With N2O it hot 619 hp before the pistons came apart. Mine is 11:1 per NHRA Stock eliminator rules and it cranks out over 400 hp at the flywheel. Thats with an electric water pump, (alternator and power steering pump) on the engine during the dyno test. a 305 is every bit as capable as a 350 with the advantage of a lot faster cylinder sweeping with pistons a whole lot lighter.
Didn't mean to make it sound like they can't make power, but most stockish 305's are pretty tame. They definitely don't get the respect they deserve. I've been tossing around the idea of actually building one and making a serious effort to make power.
@@SquarebodyStuff its the EPA these engines were meant to drive on the street be dependable and get fuel mileage while passing the sniffer test. like anything including a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton on Methanol anything can be made to be fast. These engines got a bum rap because they came out in a time when ppl remembered the legendary L79. LT1, and L46. Theyre not real factory high performance engines but with a set of 081 center bolt heads these engines come alive. A simple 3 angle valve job is all they need, DO NOT PUT A 1.94 valve in them theyll actually flow less. and beyond .450 lift they stop gaining air flow.
Nice looking 305, O used to own 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais with a 305 with a 750 4 barrel V8. I never did like the HEI distributer caps, the carbon build up on the inside over time would prevent the car from starting and I would have to carry a spare cap or paper nail file to clean the carbon off with or the spare cap to replace the carboned up one with.
My '86 c20 came with a 750cfm on the 305. I've been driving it for 10 years & it runs great!
ive had about 8 of them, never had an issue were i had to change an hei cap yet.....
Loved the intro. Salute!
Thanks
I salute you and that awesome 305! It's great. Thanks for the video.
Thanks
@@SquarebodyStuff you're welcome my friend..
V8 sound, v6 power. Rock on 305.
The 305 was not the best powerhouse motor, but they will run forever.. 👍
My next video coming out today will be this motor with a 250 shot of nitrous at the track.
My mom's 79 SS Elcamino with a 305 I've built it twice this round I took it .060 over..... So it's Now A 315 with H.O Pistons ta make 9.5 Ta 1 Compression ..... Stuffed A Crower Solid Lifter Cam & Full Roller Rockers! Makes Mom's Elky Haul Ass & Sounds Bitch'n! Makes Really Good Power And Great Gas Mileage!
Awesome.
I had an '81 GMC 305H 4BBL 9 : 1. The 350 (same year) only had 10 more hp.
My 81 had over 300,000 miles when I sold it.
She sounds pretty damn good with them open headers 😎
Sounds good 👍
Thanks
Also This is to show the new generation that learn your car and make sure you start with what you got and learn combos and do your research on all builds and how they perform 👍
Sounds really good and looks beautiful to boot!!! GREAT JOB Buddy!!!
Thanks
That is sick man
Thanks
Best video on the internet sir!
Thank you very much.
Noticing your video is showing 3 years.. Hows it holding up now you have some miles on it. Those was good motor once you threw away the stock crank, cam and carburetor.
Very nice build sir. Remember... in a fast car or truck the one thing you need........ Dam good brakes. 👍
It held up fine to a 250 shot of nitrous.
czcams.com/video/nQrWecGHSII/video.html
I couldn't kill it so I tore it down for some upgrades. Here's the playlist to what I've slowly been doing to it.

Looks and sounds great, really love the old glory color scheme!!!

Nice motor sir so I am putting my 305 in a s15 93 sonoma short bed single cab barebones cam 280/290, weiland action +plus intake, jegs shorty headers, stock 416 heads new by the way. 308 gear mini spool, 625 cfm street demon with a demon tps kit the wires right to my ecu stock 4l60e lol told my 12 year old little girl this going to be her truck for high school to make the boys mad at her just need to pull the 4.3 and for the great vid sir
Sounds like it's gonna be a fun little truck.
Sounds great
Thanks.
love the 305 !!!! spent 3 days porting my heads got them back cut w 200 lbs springs ang a .551 lift cam... next is nitrous ... ihope
I plan on porting the heads some day.
Nice set up, I just got a 77 Nova, all original car with a 305 so I'm planning on leaving it in the car but I would like to get it to around 300 HP.
Shouldn't be too hard. Checknout what has become of that 305 now. czcams.com/video/vuPj6shvMiY/video.html
I will take all the 305's I can get my hands on..
I got a 89 caprice 305 wish u was close hell I'd pay to get this set up lol liked it without mufflers boi sounded mean...
I ran a 305 in a 1968 Chevelle Ran like a beast !

the MOST BASED 305 EVER
Stumbled onto this because I have a 76 c20 and wanted to see what’s up great video.
Thanks.
So sweet beach boys should have made a song about it! “she’s so fine my 3-0-5!”
I love the way sound . Chevy the best
I'm an old school 89 chevy c1500 man myself.....but i live old trucks 305 , 350 , 327 , 406 .....
Nice!!!! Sounds and looks awesome!! revs out great! a couple friends of mine had these one in a HO 84 Z28 and 87 Monte Carlo SS, cam swaps, 3.73 gears, exhaust and some other little hop ups etc. and we're little monsters around town back in the late 80s. Peace.
Thanks They respond well to the regular upgrades. I've had a blast with this one.
Just in time for Independence Day..... Murica!!
Sound good buddy
Thanks.
Great video I'm always looking forward to them
Thanks. Good to know I've got a regular here.
Very nice!! Love the way you dressed it up.
Thank you.!!
🇺🇸 Sounds healthy. 👍🏻
Thanks, since this video, I've turned this 305 into a 339. This link is to the first dyno session with it. czcams.com/video/3TW-43a_FdM/video.html
I have some current videos of it at the dragstrip also.
You,ll do all right with engine, she,s goana make more power than you thinkl! Love the exhaust sound, perfect my friend!!
Think it should be all Chevy orange or black, but that's just me, still a killer 305. Love it
the 305 has great secrets .. and many people despise it .. and with little you make it great .. without as much roar as the 350
she's like the girl in the library and big glasses and a simple hairstyle ... like a geek girl ...
i love Chevy ..And I consider myself a Chevy fan .. cheers ,
Sounds good
Thanks
Sweet 305....I personally don't understand why choose a 305....but ya it's sweet.
The main reason i used the 305 is to show that they can be fun to if thats all you have to start with.
@@SquarebodyStuff well in that case...well done.
I done seen me a 305 with a tunnel ram in a ‘78 Camaro run a 12.54 @ 110 mph one time. 🤙
Heck yeah
I like project squeaky I like at 3:05 maybe one day our paths will cross and I like the challenge squeaky I have a car I have a car of my own with a 305 I call it major thunder so major thunder versus squeaky let's race let's get it on
Love That Paint Job!
Thanks✌️
I like the color scheme of your engine. Very appropriate. Runs and sounds good, too.
Thanks
pretty potent revs quick
Thanks, they always rev quick on the stand with no trans hooked to them. It runs good for a 305.
I will never use a 305. But to each its own.
It's what the truck had.
HowDo had?I stumbled in on your program, and caught the interest of your progress on your 305 build.I've had built a couple of 305s back 1985-1986 for my 1965 Chevy C20 flatbed and my 1971 Camaro stock car (street stock) in 1986 later put in my 1973 Chevelle. Both motors ran well but very snappy, therefore; I'm on my third sparebody pickup. This one is a 1983 halftone long bed currently has a 305 -700R4 tranny.l have many stories to tell, I apologize for carrying on, so I'll cut it short indeed I will follow up your progress and keep the climb going my friend 👍🏁🏁✌️???
Sorry Chad , I accidentally forgot to put the letter C at the beginning on name🙄✌️
No worries. I tend to ramble and forget things. So you're in good company. I appreciate you joining in. This is a fun build.
Kewl beans love that cam good job man
Thanks
Awesome build man🔥🔥💯💯💯
Thanks.
It doesn’t chop very much because the cam has a LSA 114. If it had an LSA 108-110 it’ll have a much rougher idle.
Yup
All the nice music and THEN you have that CRUDY alt slapped on there.
I love 305s
Remind me of my cats cutt off om 3800 olds delta 88
Tht sounds badddassss!! 🤟🤟
Thanks
This is what it is what that 305 is now. A stroker 339.czcams.com/users/shortsgaGQ1BUsx48?feature=share
Yes
I would imagine that lil 305 will do pretty good with the 4spd in that ole stepside
It does very well.
I want to learn more stuff!! You Do 😎
Sound good
I always said you can get a bit of power out 305
More than most realize
Bad Ass Paint Job!!!!
Thanks. You'll like the new version with the 339 I'm building out of this 305.
I'm building one for my 83 step right now
Dude I love this video awesome job I've been meaning to do video's on my builds 👊 what I really thought was key was when you said it's how you start building race cars. I love square body's but I'm a gbody guy and I've had some bad ass 305's in my 88 monte LS 89 Chevy G10 short van and 87 regal and I still have a stock 305 in my 90 beauville van and running strong 💪 excellent 👌 video brother 👊
Thanks
I love that lets go
Thanks to the French for are V8 motor.
305 are turds in my opinion I love the 350 smb they some monsters 👹 for there size an just a couple upgrades things can get nasty 😊
hell yea
Just found you today. My dad just gave me his 1986 square body.
Wanting yo gos it up.
First question is dash pad. All I can find is the plastic cover. Is that all that’s out there.
HATS OFF
Love it.
You're going to make me want to build a 305 more soon than that 413 👍🚒👍🍿 Love the engine stand. Do you have a video on it I'm thinking about building one myself.
Yeah, I have a video on it somewhere.
Love it😆
Thanks
I have 86 sq body with 305. I would like to get better heads and what size cam do you recommend?
That depends on what your plans are for the truck.
It will be a weekend driver. I have already installed headers, carb, intake manifold. Thank for quick response
Will also drive it to work so something with power but street legal
Awsm man luv the detail paint job on the engine too!! Hey what kinda camera do you use for your channel??
Thanks. They're just some old outdated GoPro hero 3's.
Hi I'm Duane. Just picked up really clean 1997 silverado 1500. Has a Virgin 305 tbi vortec. I've got my headers already, and like some tips on keeping it emissions friendly and pull as much power I can. Thanks and God Bless.
Did you have any problems with valve to piston clearance with this cam. I want to get a summit 1105 cam and I’m not sure if I’m going to have to change pistons from stock to get clearance.
No issues at all.
I have a 1978 camaro with a 305. My car passes smog. If i change out the cam to get one like the one you put on will it then not pass smog? Love the sound.
I doubt it.
How uk sheen the map sensor is failing on these engines
Can you please send me a link to the oil pump, pushrods & valve springs you got for this job please?
hey i want to change out my springs and push rods, and put a mild cam in it you think your set up would fit? GREAT MOTOR SOUNDS UNREAL!
It should, I didn't make any mods to anything.
Sounds good and nasty Chad! Really dig the Ol' Glory theme! Man I'm working on my first sbc chevy rebuild. Putting a 350 out of a 93 1500, and dropping it in my '82 K1500 thats got a pretty nice little running 305(good running engine) with 4 speed. I was wondering how to determine what length pushrods to order for the project. Do I need to preform some kind of measurment?
Unless you are putting a really radical cam in there stock length will work. You could still double check though. I don't have a video at the moment of checking pushrod length. A quick CZcams search should get you the info you need.
@@SquarebodyStuff Thanks for the response! Keep making those videos. Appreciate the information!

Got my 350 square body a just got me a 305 Chevy square body also just haveing trouble with wires to start but ima get 1goose hot box to start her any 1 got any suggestions if any thank u
Where you able to use stock push rod length? And would new stock valve spring be ok or would upgrading them be better? And lastly was this stock rocker ratio? Lol sorry for all the questions I really like how this sounds and wanna do it to my 305
Just stock length pushrods. I would upgrade the springs, the "Z/28" springs I used are basically a heavier stock replacement. No machine work required to use them and will handle up to around .550 lift. I also used stock rockers. Pure budget build. Here's the playlist that shows the progression of the build czcams.com/play/PLzr1ksHJJMTz2avp1iDlYYloKSKJKkFni.html
Thanks for watching. It turned out to be a fun little engine.
Did you do anything special to the heads or are they the stock heads?
Stock, Just cleaned them up and new springs. I have a video of what I done to them.
@@SquarebodyStuff thanks that thing sure does turn up good for a small chamber and a small bore I'm putting a cam in mine now so maybe it will sound as good as yours.
It actually surprised me how much it woke the little 305 up. It won't win any records, bit it's alot of fun for the money.
