When I was first qualified as a nail technician, I was employed in a beauty salon. I once had a mother and two daughters who booked in. Nothing wrong during the service, one of the daughters wanted XL nails. She was only 16 and i warned her it might be too long especially for her short nails, it would be too drastic of a change. She insisted so I did them for her. All three were happy with their sets but they just completely ingored me when I talked to them to till to pay. They just walked out the door without paying. The kicker was the next morning they called the salon complaining the length was too long, they weren't happy with the set and wanted them soaked off. So my boss ended up forcing them to pay for both three sets and three soak off before I removed the nails.

I have been a Cosmetologist for 23 years. During my first year of being in my salon, I had a woman book a hair appointment with me, and it was for a perm and a trim on extremely long hair. When I had completed the service, she absolutely loved her hair and continued to tell me so, many times. She said “ Thank you so much”, stood up, and walked out of my salon without paying. I was shocked to see that someone would actually do something so rude. I went to the door and said mam several times, but she ignored me, got into her car, and drove away! As if that wasn’t wrong enough, she actually had the nerve to call a few months later to book another appointment!! I politely told her that I would never book another appointment for her, because she left without paying. She had nothing to say in return, so we both hung up the phone and that was the last I heard from her. I had a lot of people telling me this woman was telling everyone how much she loved her hair and what wonderful work I had done on her hair. I told everyone who told me she said this, that she should have loved it since she walked out without paying, this making her service free. She should absolutely love it!! That was the only time I ever experienced something like that, and I hope to never have that kind of experience again! You go girl, you did the correct thing as well! God Bless Always 🙏🏻

You did the right thing. Get rid of toxic people as quickly as possible. She may have ‘gotten away’ with stealing from you, but as you said, your personal energy is much more valuable and she would have sucked you dry and destroyed you (I had a work colleague who terrorised me daily for 6 months until I finally quit). Keep smiling and only allow genuine people in your life. Especially if you work out of your home! 💕

Well.. being a nail tech myself, I would remove the nail extensions from her and all the remaining material, immediately dismiss her and never book an appointment with her. She would never leave my place without paying, let along with a brand new set of nails. There are so many people like her though. Trying to be the smartass, refusing to pay and get away with it. I have never encountered such a person myself, but the teacher I had during my basic education, taught us how to deal with such clients. So I was prepared for everything. She also taught us, how to spot the red flags, when we encounter with a toxic client for the first time.
As I said, I haven't had a client refusing to pay. However, I've had one (she came to me for the first time) that said that she's forgotten to make a withdrawal from the bank. She told me to wait for her, as she had her ATM card, so she would go and do the withdrawal after the appointment. Of course I went with her, pretending that I was going out anyways, so she wouldn't have to come back. And so we did. I wouldn't know if she was going to come back, so I think I did the right thing. But I would NEVER allow a stranger, come into my workplace, have their nails done and leave without paying. I would never accept a client who is running late and of course I would never be rolled over for absurd demands. If the client wants to have her nails done by me, she has to respect my work, my time, my boundaries and of course me as a human.
