  • With the Chicago Blackhawks having maybe their worst season in 70 years, I wanted to compare their year to some of the worst NHL teams of all time. From the 8-win Washington Capitals in 1974-75 to the 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings - the worst single-season team in the salary cap era - we'll take a look at some of the most dubious performances in a single NHL season. Let me know in the comments: What's your favorite NHL team's most disappointing season ever (i.e. a Stanley Cup contender that lost in the first round)? And stick around for more coverage of the NHL all season (and postseason) long!

      It’s not really unbelievable, one guy isn’t going to automatically make a whole team good suddenly. Hawks also still have a ton of cap space, they’re just getting more top draft picks and rebuilding right now; might actually be good again in like a couple seasons.

    I saw the 1975 Capitals play here in Pittsburgh on March 15th. Michel Belhumer and Ron Low coughed up 12 goals in a 12-1 Pens victory. Pens goalie Gary Inness never moved - never.

      @@TwistedWristerHockey There is a movie Only the Dead Know the Brooklyn Americans though I think that is more about their last season in Brooklyn. I haven't seen a book on them but they have a very interesting history. Really someone should write one, going back to newspaper accounts.
      Another interesting defunct team is the Montreal Maroons. I have a book on them, The Montreal Maroons written by William Brown. Hall of Famer Hooley Smith was described as the prototypical Maroon: Tough, talented, and troublesome.
      EDIT: I just rewatched Only the Dead Know the Brooklyn Americans and it is very good. It has a lot of the Americans' history.

    Considering that the Devils were predicted to win the cup this season, this may be the most disappointing season i can recall in 30+ years I've been a fan. Sure they have had plenty of bad years but to fall so far from what many of us thought they could achieve this year, this one stings.

    As a Leaf fan, the 2011-12 "18-wheeler going off a cliff" season has to be the worst. Just because they were supposed to have been building for years, and then to come crashing down and to see it was really just a house of cards. It was brutal. At least Burke got fired. Eventually.

    I'm surprised not to see any of the mid-2000's post-lockout Blues teams on here, when ownership basically abandoned the team as they couldn't get the NBA team they really wanted. The Checketts era was another dark time but they were at least average then.

    I have 3 examples of worst seasons for my teams. I am a Penguins fan, and have been following the Golden Knights since their inception. For the Penguins 1993 and 2010 were disappointing playoff series loses to the Islanders and Canadiens respectively, and for the Knights, it would have to be the playoff series against the San Jose Sharks from 2019 and the series in the bubble against the Canadiens in 2020.

    • @TwistedWristerHockey
      @TwistedWristerHockey  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Oh yeah, 1993 without a doubt. With the Knights' success, you almost have to leave them out of a video like this 😆 but you definitely have a point about both years.

    • @Tomatohater64
      @Tomatohater64 Před 2 měsíci

      I saw the Pens play from 1967-1983. Pick any season here and they sucked. Even blew a 3-games-to-none lead over the Islanders in the mid 70s which tanked their season. Lemieux saved this franchise in every conceivable way.

      @TwistedWristerHockey  Před 3 měsíci +1

    College hockey NCAA championship games...I'm bias as I was their photog for a decade+ but the best championship game was 1990-91 Northern Michigan University vs. Boston University.
    Wildcats won in triple OT 8-7 (with a really sweet goal. Just beautiful).
    NHL players in that game:
    Boston - Tony Amonte, Keith Tkachuk, Peter Ahola, Scott Lachance...
    NMU - Dallas Drake (won cup with Wings in '08. Multi 6th man award and Rookie for Wings in 1992. Hoisted the cup 1st. Much deserved) Jim Hiller (coach for the Kings) and Brad Werenka (one of the most intelligent and a top offensive defenseman. Think he had 20+ goals that season. Hobey Baker finalist)
    Plus one of the greatest scorers in NCAA history, Scott Beattie (Scoring leader and Hobey finalist, who scored 50+ in 1991 and I don't believe anyone has scored that many since though the game has definitely changed but he was unstoppable. Barely 5'-7" but the hands, shot, and vision were top caliber and he was the most entertaining college hockey player ever...like I said, I am bias, but I think many others would agree.
    If you haven't watched that game it's def worth it...if you can find the full version. I think it comes and goes on here but has been available for viewing. Peace

    You can't compare the post-expansion '70's expansion teams like caps, kc scouts with cap era bad teams. caps, kc were given nothing but shit to pick from in expansion draft back then. You were told to suck for 5 years and build thru the draft. Isles sucked their first year. Used that first pick of '73 to get their first big piece of dynasty in potvin. Some teams like rockies, seals couldn't even do that and traded high picks away. And the bad post-cap teams were bad for a reason. Total mismanagement or like pens or '15 sabres went into tanking mode for franchise type players. Bad expansion sens in '92-'93 tanked for daigle.

    • @TwistedWristerHockey
      @TwistedWristerHockey  Před 3 měsíci

      With your astute observation, I think I might have figured this out! Try this link: discord.gg/hB5RGF8Zxr. That is programmed to never expire.
      And here's all the fun backstory: The weird thing is that Discord has not set ^ that link as the sort of "default" link to share; it always shows me a link that will expire in 7 days, but the url is completely different. So what I did was generate the permanent url you see above, then I restarted Discord and clicked on the Invite prompt. It initially showed me a 7-day link, but when I set the link to not expire, it showed me the same url you see above. So I have faith that that url will not expire! Of course, technology often has a way of tricking us 😆
