  • Hey there, ramblers & rovers! Cancun works around the clock to squeeze tourists out of their hard-earned travel money. You can easily burn through your travel budget unless you know what you're doing.
Traveling the Riviera Maya doesn't have to be expensive if you take note of these 10 tips to help you travel to Cancun on a budget:
00:51 - 1. Travel Off-Season: Visit during the off-peak times (avoid holidays) when prices for accommodations and flights are generally lower. The biggest holidays are going to be Mexican Semana Santa and American Easter when Cancun becomes an absolute madhouse.
01:50 - 2. Book Things in Advance: Look for flight and accommodation deals and book well in advance to get cheaper rates. Cancun is a major global tourism destination, and if you wait until the last second, someone is going to nab that room or dorm bed. In a city as expensive as Cancun, budget accommodation options run out quickly, especially during peak seasons.
02:34 - 3. Stay in the Local Zone: Cancun is divided into two major areas: the Local Zone and the Hotel Zone. The Hotel Zone hosts some of Cancun's most luxurious resorts while the Local Zone is the actual city of Cancun. Most of the beautiful beaches and many of the tourist attractions will be on or near the hotel zone, but the budget accommodation, transportation (such as the bus station to other parts of the Riviera Maya), and budget-friendly supermarkets will be found in the downtown.
04:00 - 4. Group up to save money on activities: If you want to see things outside of Cancun, why not do it in the company of awesome people? If you can find other like-minded travelers at your hostel, you can group up to share expenses like renting a car or haggle group discounts from tour companies. It's much cheaper to share the expenses if you partner with others with the added benefit that you'll make new friends to share awesome travel memories.
04:56 - 5. Use the local buses: Use local buses or public transportation instead of taxis. Taxis in Cancun are notorious for price-gouging tourists, even when you're getting a better rate. On the other hand, the bus system in Cancun is very efficient and inexpensive. A single trip will cost you less than a dollar.
05:46 - 6. Eat Local: Explore local eateries and street vendors for authentic and affordable meals instead of expensive restaurants in touristy areas. Most of the cheaper eats will be in the local zone, especially in the Parque de las Palapas, where you'll have tons of options, especially by night when the heat subsides and people set up more food carts.
06:48 - 7. Avoid Tourist Traps: There isn't a shortage of things to do in Cancun, and you certainly don't need to fall into the tourist traps to have fun. Research and avoid places that are overly commercialized and targeted at tourists, as they tend to be more expensive.
Enjoy the many free attractions in Cancun, such as public beaches, exploring the Hotel Zone, and visiting parks like Parque Las Palapas. Just the beaches alone are enough to keep you constantly entertained!
07:56 - 8. BYOB: If you drink, buy alcohol from local stores instead of bars or clubs to save on expenses. There are plenty of convenience stores (such as OXXO or Seven Eleven) close to the beaches. It'll be much, much cheaper if you buy any drinks or snacks beforehand so you won't have to rely on pricy vendors or bars.
09:03 - 9. Negotiate Prices: Don't hesitate to negotiate prices at markets or with vendors, especially when buying souvenirs or taking tours. My personal rule of thumb is if the vendors at the stalls aren't lowering their prices by at least a third, then you're more than likely getting price-gouged as a tourist. In any case, prices are raised because vendors expect you to haggle.
09:58 - 10. Book Tours Locally: Instead of booking tours through hotels or agencies, research and book tours directly from local operators for better deals. Which you can haggle. Check for discount cards or passes that offer reduced rates for multiple attractions or activities in the area.
Remember, a mix of planning ahead, being flexible, and embracing local experiences can make your trip both budget-friendly and memorable.
    Happy travels!

These are great tips! You've certainly got it down to science! I am glad I got a chance to experience a bit of Cancun and finally see what all the hype is about. (I'll stick to Bacalar!) ;)

Thanks for the comment! When I was last there, a few months ago, it was open, but I wouldn't worry too much about the parque itself being open as there are tons of food options in that area, from differing price ranges.
Hope you have a great time in Cancun, amiga! Safe travels!
