I've been paying a lot of attention at the floor set up at every olympics. I think the springs are definitely there in 84 and 88, but its nothing like what we have now. London 2012 floor looks like a mattress....I wish there was a site that openly discussed this, because it really puts things into perspective.
I agree. For my money, she is the best at choreography too. What ever they threw at her, she made it quality. This choreo would have been cheesy on any other gymnast, and other "pixies", though cute, were kind of annoying. Maria was in a class of her own, and terribly under appreciated. Her 80/81 choreography was just beautiful!
Yes; this routine was a little too "cutsie," but it wasn't Maria's fault: she had to do whatever the coaches choreographed for her. Oksana Omelianchik was able to pull off this style brilliantly in 1985-1986, but she had better choreography to work with. To see what a beautiful and elegant dancer Maria was, watch her floor routines from 1980 and 1981. She's a tumbling ballerina!
I agree. I was ending my compeditive gymnastics just as spring floors were coming in to be the standard. The very first spring floors actually had real metal springs atached to ply-wood and the standard 40' x 40' Nissan mat on top of that and then they started to switch to spring floors with "sponge-like" springs instead of the metal ones with I really didn't like too much. Did you know that way back they actually tumbled on your basic hardwood basketball gym floors....OUCH!
Yeah, this routine was weird, and not in a good way. The choreography was far from brilliant, which is a shame for someone as elegant as Filatova. But she had superlative tumbling, so difficult and powerful.
Take note, that is NOT a spring floor. The gymnast of those days really worked for thier doubles.
She is my friends gymnastics coach!!!!

Agreed
Just fabulous; a 4ft 6 inch 66 pound peanut who could explode like dynamite on her tumbling passes; her choreography is charming also.

Maria was good, I liked her.

I'm not too sure but I think it was the late 70's -78' or 79'. The Moscow Games in 1980 had a spring floor for competion.
do we know the year that the springs were put in the floor for international competition? I cannot find this anywhere and I am dying to know.
