As an Arsenal fan I simply don't care about who has the better squad. All I care about is that we finish ahead of City, cos then we'd have won the league.

I disagree with Rory about Pep vs Klopp. Pep is constantly moving the tactical realm of the game each season and keeping his team relevant in that realm at a rate that Klopp doesn't do. Man City doesn't really have a drop-off transition. Klopp does, because he hasn't shown in his career that he can manage a transition in systems/styles. He always has this 1-2 season dip before he bounces back with the new tactical vision (although they always seem to have a similar motif, like Pep's teams tend to be based on positional play and ball control).

    • Blade67
      Blade67 Před 20 dny +2

Klopp would destroy Pep in the PL with the same spending power & would've won 3 CL's in 7yrs with that sort of backing.

    • Nico B.
      Nico B. Před 20 dny +2

@Blade67Yep but Pep fanboys won't admit. Pep has a way better Squad way more Money to spent. But Terry won't admit it's a huge advantage, because he never gives LFC any credit. Even Heinckes and Flick won the CL at Bayern, which pep couldn't do, because he didn't have a world class squad Like Barca and City with a lot of money to spend. That's Just the reality.😂😂

    • Nick Campbell
Nick Campbell Před 20 dny +1

@Akeem Honestly, Klopp has spent a lot of money. But Liverpool don't really sell at the same rate that Man City do. That's problematic for having funds. It's why I brought up Klopp's prior experiences. Dortmund has money and rotates players in & out well. Like a Brighton. He still experienced that dip. His focus on pressing wears players out and he needs to better refresh the team. It's probably his only failing. Liverpool at the start of last season was relatively the same as the Liverpool of 2018. And that was with him doing the most turnover he's done in a few years with Mane leaving. I think it's a shortcoming he's recognizing he needs to work on, because these past 2 seasons, he's turned over a lot of players. Just not the back line.

  • The Mad Hatter
The Mad Hatter Před 20 dny +11

As a City fan, having gone toe to toe with LFC over the years, I respect LFC and what they’re capable of doing over Arsenal. LFC have proven they have the mentality while Arsenal have done the opposite - they’ve proven 2 seasons back to back they crack under pressure. Maybe Arsenal go the whole way this time, to the very end of the season, but until they prove it, LFC are a more legit title contender given what Klopp got them fighting again after an atrocious season while Arteta and Arsenal collapsed . They have the mentality as they fought till the end for Europe, while Arsenal crumbled under the pressure.
I go by facts not emotions. Again, I’m not saying Arsenal can’t be title contenders, but they have to prove their legitimacy which they’ve done the opposite over the past 2 seasons. That is not an opinion, that is a fact and Arsenal along with their fans have to own it BUT they can prove otherwise this season. It’s up to them…

    • Michael Boiteau

    • Madhatter

The question is who has the better team, not who you respect or who'll last to the end

    • The Mad Hatter
The Mad Hatter Před 20 dny

@Michael Boiteau How’s it not true? The only evidence we have is Arsenal bottling top 4 and the league back to back seasons. Their default is the crack under pressure as they’ve proven and therefore to be otherwise, they need to prove it first. What has Arsenal done to refute that they crack under pressure? Nothing.

    • The Mad Hatter
The Mad Hatter Před 20 dny

@Madhatter Who’s the better manager? Arteta or Klopp? No comparison as Arteta has won an FA cup with the original team he inherited and has won nothing of substance since. Klopp: CLs league title in diffeeent countries, domestics etc. no comparison.
Better GK? Clearly Alison. Top 2 in world
Better RW? Salah all day and even try that Saka nonsense as he’s a ghost in big games and has won basically nothing.
LFC attack is more experienced and more lethal than Arsenal as a unit.
      Arsenal have a better midfield.
On the whole, Arsenal have a better defense (certainly CDM).
Problem is, your team has won nothing and have proven when under pressure, they crack. Bottled top 4 bottled the league. That’s a big body of consistent crumbling
You cannot refute that. LFC have a much stronger mentality which is proven, even last season they rose to the challenge in the final 10 games while Arsenal crumbled.
LFC have already looked more convincing in their wins than Arsenal with the exception of the Chelsea game as both teams had no proper CDM. Since then, they’ve looked more convincing than Arsenal.
The pressure is on Arsenal this year: you want to be title challengers (you’re not near as convincing this season so far as you were this time last season) and now ppl expect it, people expect you to get at least through 1 round of the knockout stage of the CL - no putting your second string players in like last year in Europa. This season will make it break Arteta and Arsenal given the money you’ve spent, the expectations to win the league and go deep into the CL. Excuses are over. Arsenal reputation as bottlers and 1 hit wonders will be disproven or solidified based on their performance this season. I’m looking fwd to see which will happen

    • Michael Boiteau
Michael Boiteau Před 20 dny +3

@The Mad Hatter that's the thing tho. U say crack under pressure when everytime they have 'bottled it' it has been on the back of an injury crisis.
I'm obviously not going to be able to convince you of this as the banter has already been decided on your part but the truth is there and you know it.
They had a season out of European football completely and then the next season had a title challenge and the reason they had fallen flat was because of depth. Injuries ruined both seasons and you know it.
Liverpool themselves have bottled more than arsenal have only winning the league the year man city were out from covid. But I can't get away with saying that cause klopp is highly rated

  • Nicholas
    Nicholas Před 20 dny +2

What I can say is that Pep's eye for talent that suits his system is better than Klopp but it's a good conversation to have because....Pep has only won when he has a generational talent in his team and that's why he failed at Bayern Munich so there's a debate that could be had

I have a scenario that I think could play out. It will be a title race between Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Man City winning the treble last season and with players departing will create a mini transition and a slight drop off for them in terms of their usual level. When it comes to Arsenal I don’t know if they are hungry and determined enough to put things right (based on last season). I think that hunger might not be as focus because of the champions league participation. A competition they have been absent from for so many years. Along with the injuries of key players (Timber & Partey) and Havertz settling in. There is a lot of factors that will give them the dark horse chance of the three contenders. With Liverpool they could easily have a start like how arsenal started last season that made them challengers and with the easier fixtures of the Europa league to rotate squad if they get into the situation Arsenal found themselves in last season I don’t think Man City will have the firepower to catch them. Now Everyone is talking about Liverpool defence yes it’s not great like it used to be but it’s a defence that played with each other for a long time that knows how to win together. Also Allison can get you out of a sticky situation more often than say Ramsdale. That will give Liverpool a more chance to adjust and win games with their Firepower upfront. Also I think this is Salah last season so he is determined to leave on a high and Klopp is determined to prove that this Liverpool team are better than how they were perceived last season.

  • Cavan Riley
Cavan Riley Před 20 dny +16

Would probably say arsenal have the slightly better squad but slightly. Klopp is way better than arteta manager is key for winning anything Klopp will utilise this very exciting LFC squad with Szobo and Macca, Gravenberch in midfield which was relegation standard last season more than arteta and i bet Pep and City fear us way more.

    • Kit Johnson

Arteta hasn't even managed for 4 yrs, so comparing them is not really valid. No one really knows with conviction whether Arteta can go to the next level, and obviously Klopp has already proved it. But City don't fear anyone.

    • Cavan Riley
      Cavan Riley Před 20 dny

@kitjohnson7714 didn't compare them I just said Klopp is clear right now which is a fact I'm pointing out the obvious. As for City fearing us or them you can see that when we play them they don't play like themselves and pep is different on the touchline and in build ups that's respect for each others work. I don't think the city squad or management look at arteta and think they are a threat on the pitch. Not fear probably wrong choice of word but respect I don't think city respect anything arsenal have done yet on the pitch could well change and it needs to change.

    • Kit Johnson
      Kit Johnson Před 20 dny

@Cavan Riley Fair point. I think City probably fear going to Anfield because when Liverpool play a big team there, that place just has an iresistible force about it. Pep has a way of playing that it needs a certain type of technical player to make his system work. Those players don’t come cheep so he has to spend a lot of money but with all the right ingredients it’s the best thing you’ll ever taste. Klop can take average players and fit them into a system too makes them challengers.

I support Real Madrid, and I do rate Pep very highly as a manager, but I also get the impression that most fans take for granted the work done behind the scenes by Txiki Begiristain. DoFs of his quality are so, so important to the success of a team, and they don't seem to get any credit for it. Man United haven't had a stable DoF since SAF retired and it seems to me that no one really cares.
They're too occupied with blaming whoever their manager is. I can't stress enough how much a good DoF means to a club. We got Rafael Varane for spare change thanks to Zinedine Zidane's eye for talent (and contact network) before he became a manager and was Real Madrid's DoF. I get the impression that whoever's pulling the strings at Man United can keep getting away with neverending failures because their manager is always a convenient scapegoat for whatever their issues may be.

Liverpool and Arsenal on par right now. Liverpool has a better GK, but defence, midfield and attack it's moot. Nunez only now is scoring goals, and Jesus is technically better as is Trossard. Rory is right on Pep vs. Klopp. Klopp has won without huge money. Pep had GOATs at Barca, managed the biggest club in Germany with Bayern, and richest English club with man City. Klopp won bundesliga with BVB and got to CL final. Tottenham has spent more money than Liverpool since Klopp got there. So has Arsenal. Arsenal won two FA Cups since 2015 and Spurs have won nothing. I'd argue merely being at a huge global club like Liverpool has pressure. And that Klopp was tasked to get Liverpool back to the top, and has. City were winning leagues before Pep got there.

When it comes to the Liverpool or Arsenal who's going to push City, The one thing I will say is psychologically Liverpool might have the edge in terms of Klopp has bested albeit just the one time but he has won a title over Pep and City. Now you can debate or argue if that matters in the grand scheme of things, some might say it doesn't, others might say it does. Arsenal had the title in their grasp and fell away, now while that can make you hungrier, no doubt. It could also go the other way, either way, it's an interesting debate, because Liverpool with how they've started this season have given people something to think about at least, which is always good for us all football fans.
