- You can’t help but get excited when you fly with us and see a solar eclipse. We adjusted Flight #870 from Anchorage to Honolulu on March 8, 2016 just so our passengers could catch the solar eclipse from 35,000 feet. Read more on our blog: bit.ly/1UNYZbi

An angle from this high in altitude really puts into perspective the fact you’re in the moon’s shadow during a solar eclipse. Really incredible video.
So the moon is less than 70 miles across?
@@nattybumppo4151 No, the reason is that the sun is much wider than the moon, so the shadow is a lot narrower once it reaches the earth.
the sun & moon travel east to west every day. the eclipse moves west to east.
@@ronkalinovsky6898 That’s not how shadows work my guy.
@@nattybumppo4151That is how shadows work, in fact. It’s just that most light sources on earth come from small sources that are smaller than the object that the shadow is from, so their shadows seem to get wider at a further distance rather than smaller. As for shadows from sunlight, they usually appear to stay the same size because of how far away the sun is. However, in the case of an eclipse, the relative distances between the earth, sun, and moon, and the fact that the sun is bigger than the moon, cause a cone-shaped shadow to be projected onto the earth, and the spot where the shadow touches the earth surface is far smaller than the moon - only a few miles across.
If I ever listen to a solar eclipse broadcasted live on the radio I want this guy.
On radio 😂😂😂😂

The way hes explaining it makes you get excited too. He can be a great solar eclipse tour guide. You can tell he knows a lot about it.. totality, 7 oclock, 10 o'clock, prominence, elongating, diamond ring.
Right they hating on him
@@MichelleHarris-en4qxyeah why is so much people hating on him?
I would get more excited if someone’s react like that.
@@michelm3832it’s his voice and how loud he is , no one is hating
After seeing an eclipse I can positively say this man’s reactions are 100% in line.
That is great to hear someone so genuinely excited. He will have that memory for the rest of his life. Very cool moment.
How many more will he see? Four? haha I bet he wants to chase all the rest.
Shit
Mental
Sandra exactly
Well would you look at that 😂
Man I wish more people got that excited about something. I got joy just hearing how happy he was. This was truly amazing. And my new favorite phrase of all time is "omg, PROMINENCE"
You provided one of the few comments in support of the gentleman filming the event. 99.8% of the comments just show how shallow a mind with computer/cell phone and a data plan can be. It's called PASSION....the gentleman was PASSIONATE about the rare event he was witnessing. A total solar eclipse is a MONUMENTAL phenomemon. Most of these idiots are clueless to the perfect mechanics, geometry and timing that must come together to produce such an event. And to view it - from a commercial jetliner - is a truly awe-inspiring experience to which the gentleman was reacting. The fact that he was reciting the correct terms ("prominence", "diamond ring", "Baily's Beads") throughout the recording showed this is something he had more than a passing acquaintance with. Then again, some people get that excited about Game of Thrones or some similar mindlessness.
nwest127 thank you! ❤
I thought he sounded like a nice guy :)
While he may be well versed in eclipses, to me it just sounds like he is just trying to show off his knowledge to other passengers. These events should be admired and observed in silence in my opinion. Real physicists are humbled by these natural phenomenons. They understand just how irrelevant the human race is in the universe.
Bro. Tolliver 👏👏👏❤❤
I watched this video yesterday and I thought it was exaggerated. I watched the eclipse today and this is exactly how I behaved. These total eclipses are even better in person, and much bigger!
Honestly one of the coolest videos on the internet. You can see the entirety of the moons shadow
"Here we go" "look at that" "totality"
Don't forget "oh my gooooood"

He keeps shouting random science words to sound cool as well.

@@o_sch not really, what words?
Everyone's laughing from his reaction but if You've ever seen an eclipse You know You had the same reaction. Unbelievable event..
not really. i would put all my concentration into engraving that moment into my soul (and a camera probably) rather that blither like an idiot. i've seen three eclipses so far and one of them was a totality so perfect to be seen only once a century ( 2009). yet i definitely did not act like i was having an orgasm while being high on LSD.

I actually enjoyed the wholesome joy this man and many others expressed. We get enough negative bs, so I choose to savor the good instead of make fun of him. It really was an amazing thing to experience.
He has no consideration for others around him, hes being annoying and ignoring social etiquette because the moon is infront of the sun? Nope, he can be excited and not a dickhead at the same time and he is not doing that.
@@CaIeb1get over it you sad fuuk. You will never no joy like that guy😂
I can sure see why he was so excited at seeing the eclipse after just seeing one myself here in Akron, OH. Talk about surreal and mind-blowing!😮
I feel bad for who ever was sitting next to him on the plane....
I thought the same thing. Would totally ruin my experience unless I had headphones. 2017 will have one across the whole USA and I intend to view in the middle of a field far from as many people as possible, for this very reason.
My thought exactly :D
I agree completely. Ugh, nothing worse than a group of cheering, clapping ninnycapoos to ruin some great shots and video -_-
A hug from Kitkat!! Ik right
I found "mute" works fine to get rid of their stupid noises....
This guy is really endearing. Made me smile to hear his excitement. Cut him a break, this was a rare and unique experience that he obviously appreciated greatly. Good for him.
What an experience this gentleman has experienced. This has been probably one his life’s top moments!
This is my first Total solar eclipse. And seeing it in Texas from my own eyes is breathtaking. It’s so much better seeing on your eyes than using any expensive camera.
"The mOOOooOOOns shadow is coming"
Don Beck That ridiculous voice crack😂
Mark Harvey Something tells me that from him screaming enthusiastically about everything his whole life
Don Beck It would suck to be sitting next to him
Mark Harvey it would to be in the same plane
Luisa Lima that is true😂😂
When I first saw this video, I thought the guy's reaction was overblown and a bit silly & ridiculous. After witnessing the August 2017 total solar eclipse from Missouri, I can totally understand & relate to what he's feeling. There's no words to describe the power of totality over our mere human emotions!
No
Yes, and that's exactly why you STFU in totality.... goddamnit
Why not just be happy for others happiness? I don’t understand
k.
I saw it from Missouri too
He’s just gotten the best seats in the house to watch an unique event.
I think it's awesome that he shared this. That's beautiful
It's pretty sad how people complain about everything. Hearing someone excited about a unique experience about the amazing world we live in is a beautiful thing. This video is one of the best things out there in recent days. Cheers to everyone who is constantly in awe of the beauty of nature and of the opportunity we have to share this with each other.
Well said, thank you!

Having just seen a total solar eclipse in person, I can completely understand the sense of euphoria that this man feels. I got to see the eclipse from Dublin, Ohio and to see the diamond ring, corona, and solar prominences is truly indescribable. As I watched with my family, I was also doing play by play and cheering as if my favorite player had just hit a home run in the World Series.
Seriously though this is some of the best footage i've ever seen of this phenomen

When I was in Tunnel Hill Illinois for the 2017 eclipse, we actually briefly saw the shadow sweep over us. It was absolutely blink and you miss it but it was still visible coming over the hills. Utterly stunning. I'd have given a finger to be on that plane.
