  • This is what happened to us in race 4 of the 2022 Medway Yacht Club Squib summer series. The race wasn't as exciting as last week but the sail itself was epic.
    We make these films just for fun, and we hope that you have enjoyed watching them however we have been asked on a couple of occasions now if we have a Patreon account. We don’t want to do that at this stage as we feel it would turn the channel into a business, and as we said at the beginning, this is all just for fun. However if you would like to support us and feel you could help contribute to the cost of making these films then you can do that via our PayPal account here. A big thank you to everyone that has already done this, its a great help.

    I was in your neck of the woods today, came up to get fuel at Gillingham, pop in to the chandlery and then on to the visitors pontoon at Chatham for food shopping. Preparing for trip up the Thames on Thursday for a couple of nights on my Corribee. You may remember you helped me get a part made for my gooseneck 3 or 4 years ago. Still going strong! Cheers

    Well done another great production and advert for Squib racing.
    I had been out on Go-Kart solo before I saw you all at the start and it was pretty breezy that day ! Its always nice to arrive back at the club moorings to catch the fleet either starting or finishing.

    I used to go sailing many years ago on a Dufour yacht. We always had problems with our hoists and drops. Someone thought of using a bucket with a hole in it for pulling the kite through on hoists and blow me, it worked!

    Not many people can do that well in a race whilst multi-dimensional filming. Love it !

    A few tips spinnaker related.
    Route the spinnaker halyard all the way back to the helm position. This means, the helm can hoist, while the crew takes care of the pole and other things. Add a line on the pole that will allow the crew to open the fitting at the end, thus releasing the spinnaker guy. Another trick is to put a stopper knot on the pole launch line such so the fitting is in front of the mast. Not too much so it messes with the jib, but just enough to the pole doesn't get stuck between the main and the shrouds if you let the main all out. Also, is class legal to have a small plastic stool, if your crew can't quite reach the pole in "retracted" position.
    Practice hoisting and flying the spinnaker without the pole. To do this, the helm hoists and the crew pulls the spinnaker on the correct side. The crew might need to pull the jib tight to make it easier to get the spinnaker across. At this stage, the helm can get control of the spinnaker and keep it flying until the crew gets the pole on, sets the jib etc. This helps with all sort of situations, if you need to gybe after a mark rouding, or you need to gybe, or you are getting ready to drop the spinnaker etc.

      Hi Petru. Funny you should mention the haliyard as that is exactly what we have done. Much better with me at the back pulling it up because as you say I can then temporarily take control of the sheets as Hannah gets things sorted.
      I like the idea of stopping the pole from getting trapped by the boom... as I'm not on the boat how much pole has to be sticking out to clear these?

    I know it's a crazy big ask.

      Hi Thos. Thanks for the feedback. Its a good idea the trouble is getting shots that show you why we are making the changes we are making is not that easy and I'm not sure how much sense it would make otherwise but we will keep it in mind and see if there is something we can do.

      Hi Eric. Yes its a very UK centric class, but over here its big. Generally only pockets of fleets but they still get loads to there traveller events, more than just about most classes, dinghy's included!

    Another great video, and as others have said love the variety of camera angles and commentary. Giving me ideas for how to position cameras on my Flying 15. Also wondering if the way you've set up the running rigging (with inhaul outhaul pole launch etc) is standard on all squibs or whether you've customised. Maybe a walk through on boat setup as a future video...?

    • @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily
      @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Richard. I'm afraid i wouldn't know how Squibs are set up generally and Id bet they arnt like ours :-) When we got Legend it was really just a pile of bits so we had to figure it out ourselves, and are still figuring truth be told. When we arrive at something we like then yes, i think your right a walk through of how its done may be useful to others

  • @bradleyianfield

    Are you not allowed to use a fly away pole?

    • @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily
      @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Bradley. Yes it has a fly away pole but its just one pole and it goes down just one side of the boom so to jibe you have to take the pole off, jibe the boat and then redeploy it. The trouble is in that wind strength its all to easy for it to collapse and wrap itself around the forestay and that is then a real pain to untangle
