The capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals found in most of the countries in South America. They live near lakes, rivers, swamps, and flooded savannas in tropical rainforests eating grass and wet leaves. They have heavy bodies with dense course fur and are excellent swimmers. Their small eyes, nose, and ears are located high on their heads so that their faces remain exposed and alert when most of their body is submerged. The easy going capybaras communicate well with their purrs, barks, and whistles. They live in communities of 10-20 individuals, each with a single dominant male, however, some herds increase to over 50.
The adaptable capybara enjoys harmonious relationships with both people and animals. Their engaging social behavior makes them want to stay close to one other. The friendly capybara is warm and affectionate, which is why they’re sometimes called, “Natures lovable giant.” The capybara has even become popular as pets due to their gentle character.
