    Good news everyone. The western electric tube plant in Georgia which is the old Mullard plant has stated that they will begin manufacturing guitar amp tubes very soon. They have all the old Mullard tooling so will cut time off if the delay. Also the numbers that they will be manufacturing will ensure that they will not come at a premium cost. Happy days. Rory used a treble booster before Brian. I watched an interview video of Brian May and he talked about how as a young man that he a friend were huge fans of Rory Gallagher. They would go to his shows at small venues. A couple of times he worked up the nerve to talk with Rory. Rory turned out to be such a friendly and wonderful guy quite willing to answer any questions these two young, aspiring musicians had. They asked Rory where he got his tone from and he told them that all you need are two things. First, a Vox AC30 amp. And second, a Range Master Treble Booster. So Rory came before Brian. They were friends for a very long time.

    Slight correction to Your Guitarist timeline…. Rory Gallagher was the one who revealed how he got his sound to a star struck Brian May… So it was Rory first & then Brian who followed after RE: adoption of a treble booster. Great show btw. 👍👍👍

    I don’t think neither Jimmy Page or Jeff Beck are famous for using a treble booster, I think they were famous for using a Tone Bender. Correct if I’m wrong. Also fun fact: Brian May got his sound from Rory Gallagher after he saw a concert by Rory Gallagher and he really like the tone, so he stayed after the show and asked him about how he gets his sound and he told that he plugs a treble booster into an AC 30. You can find the clip online of Brian May talking about this.

    One thing I'd add for people considering a treble booster: there are LOADS of sounds from the ’60s and ’70s that you probably think are Marshalls, and have probably even been *told* are Marshalls, that are actually AC15s or 30s with treble boosters in front. We associate Vox with that chime and "pling," which gets compressed off with the booster; now, after quite a lot of sessions, I think "Vox with treble booster" WAY before "cranked Plexi" (or imitation thereof) when I'm in the studio and want a classic British crunch c. 1970. (And if you don't have a Vox, any Rangemaster-style boost is killer with tweed Fenders, cranked Champs and Princetons of any era, Boogie Marks and Rectos set to medium gain, crunchy Supros, and even Marshalls!)

    *ADD "INDUCTION BIAS" to your Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster or clone. Save this and please do share your results. I designed the circuit and fell in love with it!* ----
    I created a really cool induction bias circuit on my Rangemaster treble booster that sounds amazing. I've been wanting to apply it to a fuzz circuit. It's more stable than robbing voltage. Give it a try. A major bonus is it's sweet spot is right on the edge of cutoff, so once set it effectively becomes a noise gate if you desire, and foot switchable with simple two wire make/ break. I recommend tuning it to edge of cutoff for lead playing as it kills feedback, OR you just keep the knob away from cutoff, it's still in the sweet spot without gating.
    *Parts for PR Jacobs Induction Bias* --
    *80 mHenry inductor* . Doesn't have to be exact (you add values in series with inductors). certainly the cool wah pedal TDK Inductors or larger chassis mount inductors look coolest, but any inductor works if it's in spec/ value.
    *250k audio taper pot* . You can make the mod foot switchable simply by breaking the inductors connection. Highly recommended and can use shielded or non shielded 2 conductor wire whichever works best for you. Personally I've found no difference.
    *PR Jacobs Induction Bias for the Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster Treble Booster* The Circuit:
    Face pot toward you terminals up. 123 left to right. Rangemaster is only a 1 transistor circuit, but for a fuzz face based circuit you'll focus on Q2. I'd try reversing any existing Attack mod on Q2 emitter back to stock for a fresh start.
    So take your inductor(s) and connect it to Q2 Emitter. Connect it's other end to terminal 1 on pot. Connect terminal 2and 3 together and run to ground. Bypass through a make/break switch, breaking connection to ground bypasses the mod. -- try various inductor values and types. I used a 41mHenry at first, but discovered after I put another 41mH in series it sounded better, and I put a switch on it to compare,, and found myself just leaving it 82mH mode.
    To operate: Turn pot fully clockwise and slowly turn down until it sounds best. The sweet spot is right in between coughing out and it having no effect. The sweet spot has a boost quality with increased clarity a very desirable breakup crunch.
    I hope more people try out this mod. The only time I don't use it much is with a telecaster through a high powered amp. Works great on Les Paul with Seymour Duncan JB and 1959 pickups through Jet City JCA100HDM on Marshall 4x12 spkr cab. I have also found that the very awesome, under recognized Donner LAX COMP compressor limiter As first pedal and the modded Rangemaster next in line, I can really get it perfect! [ I also use the setup with a Joyo American pedal at the end for various amps. Such a great pedal is the American!
    ------------------- No decent Donner LAX COMP reviews so I'll put one in the comments. FYI It's designed around the coveted Universal Audio 1176LN Limiting Amplifier. So look at reply...And save that mod you'll love it. It's actually just a couple parts remember.

    • @paulj0557tonehead
      @paulj0557tonehead Před 5 měsíci

      ( AUTHOR review on >> *Donner LAX COMP* is their version of the classic Universal Audio 1176LN Limiting Amplifier. A very handsome pedal actually, it even has 76 in the logo if you look close. Foolish of Donner not to mention it anywhere in their ad campaign, so I've been mentioning it around. Now one quality of a compressor is its breathing character, but often we don't want this. The Donner is rock stable.
      Donner LAX COMP is designed around the LM3080 OTA ( Operational Transconductance Amplifier , see an excellent article on the CA3080 OTA in *Internet Archives- Radio Electronics magazine May 1988 pages 63-68* . I happened to recall seeing it a couple years ago when looking through 4-5 issues of the magazine I'd kept from my early 20's). Also in the circuit are 3 transistors and approx 50 surface mount resistors and capacitors.
      As I mentioned it is a very stable, but very warm pedal as well. I like that the Limit control raises the clean headroom. The Bright switch operates to preserve clariy. I got my LAX COMP brand new from Donner's Ebay store {for 35 US}. I'm going to get another one for my recording setup. For a good example of a recording with what appears to be 1176 on every track, is Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama.

    So fun you use J Mascis as an example of loud guitar sound; I saw them in 2017 and ended up RIGHT IN FRONT OF J, except he had a Hiwatt stack instead of an Orange. It was so loud that my ears weren’t just ringing but were sore FOR DAYS. But it was the best guitar tone I ever heard.
    Anyway, great episode and makes me question if I should run my VC35 with a bit more gain and get a treble booster…

    Blues, light boost (mid range or low mid) . Rock and possibly metal (not a metal player), very heavy mid to high/med boost into already pushing amp. This is getting easier. Brands be damned, that is the gist. Low sounds good in isolation or absent a bass or baritone, but mostly get lost in the mix. What a fun journey we take. Try it all!

    Most of the Deep Purple stuff from the early late 60s and 70s was Recorded on an AC30 with a treble booster... So perhaps Blackers was one of the first to use that combination way before May and Gallagher (who always get the mentions...)

      It wasn't mentioned in the vid, but the Catalinbread Skewer is broadly based on the Hornby Skewes treble booster that Ritchie used. The accompanying Dreamcoat overdrive pedal is based around the mic preamp circuit from the Aiwa reel to reel tape deck he used as an od.

    Oh, and Mick - a little thing I discovered that you might like: next time you're going for that classic mid/late ’70s session man tone, like Larry Carlton's 335 into a Mark I Boogie or Lukather with his Rivera-modded silverfaces, try:
    treble booster (ideally one with some lower mids) >>
    mid-gain overdrive (TS, Distortion+, Rat w/gain low, left side of the Gladio, you know the sort) >>
    anything resembling a black or silver Fender clean sound (say the Tone King Imperial).
    I know you've got a **real** Boogie Mk. I, but for anybody who's looking for that sound from a ’65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue - or a Hot Rod Deluxe, too!, with its own midrange - treble booster >> medium gain OD >> Fendery clean does a bang-up job with that "everything on 7" early Boogie tone.

      @t3hgir Před 2 lety +1

      try building your own warmoth tele, that's my next project. You can specify whatever neck construction, fingerboard radius, inlays. View body blanks by wood and weight or have your own made. I figure it's a good way to learn proper guitar finishing. The thought of a custom build Tele or strat that I can finish myself with nitro lacquer like Gibsons is enticing!

    • @igordemoraeslenzi
      @igordemoraeslenzi Před 2 lety +1

      @@t3hgir I’m not us based, so partcasters tend to get expensive with scarce parts on the market. My strat is almost like that. I have a road worn mex 60s strat with Emerson custom electronics and lollar pickups. Took me some time to assembly it, but when I finally did it, it was amazing. Really like that guitar.
      I had some Teles over the time, and really like the looks of a lake placid blue that I had at one point. But the neck wasn’t quite right and the never had a pickup that I really liked (didn’t tried many as well - maybe that was the problem).

And no the super has no correlation to it. I have a problem. I think you missed out a really big treble booster use case as evidenced by the Thorpy Veteran and AnalogMan Sun Lion. Treble Booster taming the bottom end of your favourite fuzz face when pushed to the point it gets flubby and you get lost in the mix. I reckon this combo perhaps has been in use for a long time.

    I think the Catilinbread Skewer sounded great, but all sounded awesome.. I'm using QSC speakers for monitors, this stuff is picky enough. Serious cork sniffing. But it must be done. Or build your own- it's a simple sensitive transistor circuit - a great first project. They all sound dif. But the one you build is certainly yours. An endearing testament to tone. So many kits, versions and direction.

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 Před 2 lety +1

      I've tried many, and though I usually dig Catalinbread, the Naga just dosen't capture the lower gain and compression, - being Silicon, - of the Germanium units.It's also been cleaned up, and can be used as a mid boost, as well.IMO, a good pedal IF you play mostly harder, higher gain stuff, but something like the EQD Bows is more like the real deal.Greer also make several vintage types, that aren't stupid expensive,- yet.
      I think the key is guitar volume knob control sensitivity, and what the baseline of the gain begins as.If you're interested in the concept, I'd start trolling for one of the better used units before they get even more expensive.A few years from now, you won't be able to buy one for under $500.
