Today we are talking about getting around Tokyo by bicycle.
Also.... I got stopped by the police on my bicycle.........
Also...
Music by Ikson
/ ikson - Zábava
Another tip is, do not listen to music on earphones/headphones while riding your bicycle in Japan, it is illegal and potential fine: Up to ¥50,000!
Same thing with using your phone while riding your bicycle.
Good to know, I always do that. I would of never knew.
Seriously? What a bummer. Although I get it can be a tad dangerous.
Emil Kingsley I didn't know about this either, but I always ride with only one headphone in so I can still hear my surroundings. I think I'd be too nervous to ride around with all street sounds blocked out.
It totally depends on the prefectures. While some prefectures prohibit riding with earphones on, Tokyo doesn’t as long as you can hear environment sound. Also Japanese Police don’t usually give tickets to cyclists unless you act like a complete jerk.
What about airpods + beanie ?
That skateboarder passing by almost felt like a setup, just how perfectly he came into shot as you were discussing how people get around!
Love Tokyo Tuesdays!
At 2:42 he passed by a dry clearers that I used to live across the street from.
I really enjoy your channel! Thank you! Keep up the great work!
Biking around Chicago was one of the most enjoyable parts of living there. Tourist season made it incredibly difficult though! Tourism is essentially year round in Tokyo too.
Awesome looking Honda Ruckus! Great video btw.
I found your channel thanks to Sharla and I'm so glad that I did-your videos are really interesting!
Wooo first comment, I am going to say that I love your videos that you made so far. Could you do a video maybe about secret places in Japan?
I did a guided bike tour of Tokyo, it was really nice and I felt safe all the time :) The only thing I missed on my mamachari was a gear set
I used to live in Japan, Saitama, Tokyo, Fukuoka, and would love to have a GPS or Strava based coputer there. I was there for about 6 years. What a blast because bicycle rides would open up tons of interesting locations. I had a bike and could usually beat the train to any locatio of 10 kilo or less distance.
Monday evenings are always better with my Tokyo Tuesday’s ... thanks Norm!
Perfect timing, was on my FLX pedal assist bike most of the day and am looking forward to bringing it to Tokyo. Already checked and it’s adjustable to local specs.
Is there no helmet law in Japan?
Yes, must have another video with “her” ... the other bike ;)
Tokyo by bicycle! Between you and Martina, you guys have convinced me that's the way to go!
Hi Norm!
🍙
Great video! Always good to see you !
I have to give you props on your mad cycling skills! I can't bike with my tiny little cannon let alone a DSLR. All the footage would just be me falling over or crashing into things every 5 minutes. Lol
Hi Norm! Great video yet again! And honestly there is so much to see when u ride a bike! Do drivers respect people who are in the road with them? Is it cheaper there to buy a bike? Keep being awesome! Lol
Nice video dude. I plan on bringing my bike next time I visit Japan and I can't wait to check out what it has to offer. Also if you want to check out the sickest bike shop I've ever been to, check out Blue Lug. Although since you're in Tokyo and have 4 bikes I think you might already know of them.
I'm looking forward to renting a bike and exploring Asakusa in April!
Bike riding is one of my favorite activities. I think it would be cool if you did a video of the best places to take a bike ride.
They crazy part they actually find the bicycles and return to you. Here in UK you pray every hour your bike is safe after locking it with 9mm hardened steel chain to a metal pole.
I’ve always wanted to live somewhere bike friendly; the hills of Appalachia are certainly not the best bike areas. I’ll have to keep this in mind once I make it over to Japan.
I was planning on renting a bike if I figure out how to get out of the airport and find my hotel... lol
To me Tokyo Tuesday is on a Monday... I'm Disney's carousel of progress... THIS A VIEW OF TOMMORROW!
heyo! what is that place where you keep your bikes? something like a special parking just for them? I mean is it common for apartment buildings to have them?
Hi Norm!
Nice little Bicycle video for us. Would think that Cycling in any country would be the same but seems no. Its the first time I've heard of registering a Bike before so that's something new.
I haven't been on a bike in decades. Classic binge watch.
A video from the future! 😱😁😅 #badjoke
This video reminded me that I need to learn to ride a bicycle...
I stay just outside Glasgow, Scotland and in Glasgow so many people cycle. It’s good to see but not really any cycle lanes lol
This inspired me to go on a bike ride a sweat a bit 😊
Just wondering how to get out of Narita Airport by bicycle and a trailer. I am going to Japan next June the 3rd., 2019. Thank You.
Great but so short😫 Can you make a video on massage places in tokyo? I would love if you could do bc you always explain things very well and look for what it is not obvious^^ お疲れ!
I could not find any information online about tourists renting bikes. I know I need the license and register the bike, but as a tourist I don't obviously have residency or such while my somewhat short stay (like 30 days). Do you have any info about tourists renting bike, or do we have to buy a bike?
How do I know when Im allowed to ride my bike on side walk or road?
I'm curious, as well as skateboards, do you see Boosted boards in Japan? If so are you going to be stopped for having one due to the motor? I have tried to research myself but nothing concrete had surfaced.
Skateboards are rare
I usually use one and am stopped almost daily
Electronic skateboards are almost nonexistent
Basic breakdown the law
Sidewalks are designated for pedestrians and bicycles
Roads are designated for motor vehicles and bicycles
Skateboards technically don’t fall into the designations for either, so it gives the police a lot of ambiguity to work with
Some will be nice about it
Some won’t
Electronic skateboards could potentially fall in the motorized vehicle category, but if they pull you over and decide to classify it as such, then you’re up the creek, because they will go after you for it being unregistered
@@TokyoLens Ahhh I see, how interesting. I'll have to look into this a little bit further. I'll be moving to Japan (hopefully) next year so having a convenient method of transportation is going to be one of those things I'll want to sort out. I like bikes but a part of me enjoys the skateboard since it's smaller and easier to travel with. Then I saw boosted boards and thought woah, even better! Though the price is extortionate.
If boosted boards can't be a thing, it would be a shame but I'll otherwise default to a regular skateboard and go from there.
Thanks for the info Norm!
@@DanielSanLIVE did you go
Hi dmv I would like to register my eboard where shall I mount my license plate 😂 I don't see why not mount the license plate on the bottom of the deck it's there you just can't see it🤣
What about parking spot in Tokyo? Is it easy to find? Is it very strict if we park it somewhere I don't know it's forbidden?
What about bike parking? Next time? Where are you Supposed to park your bike? How do you find the places that you are supposed to park a bike if you're new to an area? Where are you not supposed to but people do it anyway? What are the places/areas that you could really be in trouble if you park a bike? Getting it towed or worse? How common is it for apartments to have bike parking? Are they reserved spots? Do you have to pay extra?
Also bike pricing for the different varieties?
Hi. I love to practice tricks on a bicycle. Is there a place in tokyo where I can safely practice wheelies and hops without crashing into anyone? A park, perhaps?
I really want to get back into bike riding. I haven't done it since college since my city is one of the most dangerous cities in the US for pedestrians :(
I wanna experience biking around Japan as well. Is wearing a requirement?
Just purchased my first bike in Japan through Amazon.co.jp for super cheap. If my bike gets stolen, I'll just buy another one, so, I'm not gonna bother with registration. However, I was advised to get bike insurance and I have not been able to confirm this. Do you have any insight on this?
Two questions. Have you fallen off any of your bikes while recording?
Have you used one of those underground bike storages yet and how common are they?
Fun video. Got a story about being stopped by the police the first time I went to Tokyo in 2010.
I was in Shibuya taking pictures and one police officer came up to me, he didn't speak English or Spanish. Then a second one came up and same thing, no English or Spanish. Then a third one came up to see what was happening. He spoke English. As soon as I told them I was on vacation, he said: "Oh! You're a tourist? I apologize for the inconvenience. Enjoy your time here." To this day, I don't know why I was stopped to begin with. LOL
nice
What about wearing a bicycle helmet? Here in Switzerland to wear it is highly recommended.
I love cycling but I'm a bit affraid to do this in city 😅
Can you bring a bike inside the train, like they do in New York? Can you travel from one end of Japan to the other end in a bike?
geishavampiresa your bike has to be in a bag or a box. Many bike shops sell Rinko bags for about $45
I just checked and seems Tokyo is one of the TOP 10 cities worldwide when it comes to cycling 🚴♀️ 😍 (Amsterdam you’ve got competition)
Norm is there any skateparks in Tokyo ?!
Question: Is there a place to get used bikes in Tokyo? a 10K yen bike perhaps?
Did you find something, used bikes?
Haha, Tokyo might have much more bike lanes than whole Ireland
Hey man, you seem to know a lot about cameras - off topic to this video but I watch all of yours. What camera is best for searching abandoned places? I'd need a torch fitting - was looking at the GoPro hero 6
I like the mama bike. Don't fall down. strap that camera to the handlebars. stay safe.
What if you are traveling to Tokyo with a bicycle just for a two week holiday
How do japanese pronounce your name? Nomo? Nolomo?
I hardly bike, ever. I now have an excuse to mount a bike and get going ! what a great way to get around
I’m surprised you found a skateboarder!
4th place (comment) this week :/ … Why do you need 4 bicycles? Btw I thought you were stopped by the police because of your 'unsafe' use of a bicycle with a camera in one of your hands lol
LOL, same...
n+1 is the well known formula for the correct number of bicycles to own: Where n= the number currently owned.
Nice vid, you would have been better on a unicycle...hahahaha.
I thought for second I clicked on I destroyed 1500 dollars of camera equipment video. 😅
Yabai!
I never even SAW the Police until I witnessed a bank robbery. (:
Can you also do a video about Tokyo bike share programs? It’s something I’m looking into as I’m still contemplating on buying my own bike. There’s some other videos out in CZcams but I prefer how you present your info.
Also for ppl in Tokyo but outside the yamanote line circle, will things still be relatively accessible and enjoyable or is the statement only true around central Tokyo?
Tip for cycling in Tokyo. Cycle in Seoul Korea. Koreans are more laissez faire about laws except if you are a foreigner. Good to know. I love how flay Tokyo is. Its a change from Auckland. If you love hills NZ is the place. Similar to Japan and different.
I don't drive , tokyo is made for me haha!
I presume you can easily buy a second hand bike and also sell it back, especially around universities with lots of exchange students. My question is.. what about skate/longboards? Can you find them in thrift stores or something? I'll be in Japan for a year and it probably won't fit in my suitcase :D
Lottato yes. Buychari.com has quality used bikes for great prices
Moderately dangerous. You could get a go-pro.
Please wear a helmet!
What was that place you went to to register your bike?
This video is like 100 years old lol
It's good to see people and motorists accepting of bicycles in Japan since they allow you to see things you wouldn't usually see. In the UK cyclists are public enemy number one.
What GPS firmwear system do you use?
Best process to rent a bike while visiting?
あh!けいさつは怖いい。>。< Do you have any issues on your skateboard? You have to register your bike??
I kinda hoped you'd tell where to get the bicycle.
Wasn’t really the point of the video. But I’ll make it simple for you:
Literally anywhere
Just google bicycle shop
No point in recommending a specific shop since these shops are always changing and disappearing.
But there are THOUSANDS of bike shops in Tokyo
Hell... you can buy a bicycle at Yodobasho camera if you want to.
@@TokyoLens I wouldn't buy a bicycle for my two week trip, I meant renting. I saw a video of some couple who had trouble fimding available bicycles.
How much does it cost?
how much does what cost??
Are there helmet laws in Japan? Everyone in your video (including yourself!) didn't have a helmet on! (It's a given to have one in the States.)
hey jack dorsey...how u doiin
If you're doing a lot of cycling on the roads, you should definitely consider using a helmet. I know it's not mandatory (Japan is oddly backward when it comes to bikes and helmets) and it's not as cool, but I've seen a few accidents with bikes and cars. Usually taxis whose drivers probably have other things distracting them. I try to ride on footpaths and only get onto the roads when the foot traffic becomes too much.
can you do a video about renting a bike for the day please? my honeymoon is setting off from yokohama and we have 1 day to ourselves before our proper itinerary starts. biking would allow us to see much more on our own.❤
So why'd you get stopped by the police officer?
Because police wanted to make sure I didn’t steal the bike lol
@@TokyoLens xD dirty gaijins taking our bikes eh!
I was looking in to bike hire this week but sadly everywhere in the Chiyoda locality seems to be closed or too far away to get to on foot. Ended up on a Docomo bike which whilst not very cheap was convenient. Any other viable options for rock-up-and-ride in the area?
Can you make an update? (◠‿◠✿) After all these years - what about cycling in Japan - Folding bikes for commutes, rules (no Japanese follows 笑), unwritten rules that are good to know, etc.
I actually got a new bike yesterday and I'm about to leave to get it registered at my closest 警察署
is it true, that you HAVE to have bicycle insurance in Japan?
Technically, you should be wearing a helmet, but I don't see many people wearing them even after they changed the law. I always wear one when I ride my road bike, but not when I'm riding my city bike around town.
No such rule or law exhausted when this was shot. And currently there is only a request but no penalty
@@TokyoLens I didn't realize this was from 5 years ago when I saw it. Thanks for the videos.
@cbauch haha no worries!
CZcams has for some reason been pushing this video out over the last couple of days.
Glad to have you here watching!
Hope your day is great
I'm surprised cops didn't stop you for riding bicycle while recording...
Ok
I think they did. You can see the officer in 2:25 looking at him while he is leaving and blowing the whistle, then he turn his head, and "sudden video skip"...
Even if not, it's quite dangerous to do that, as he says a little bit after (and most probably punishable).
Good tips but video too shaky
its stupid how you cant ride a bicycle but not an electric scooter
What was the point of this? This explained absolutely nothing.
Ok
Sure it didn’t
You feel better now?
Here you go
This should help

I once bought a cheap $100 (10,000 Y) bicycle in Nagoya. When asked, if I wanted to register it, I said no. At the time I thought the odds of my bicycle being stolen were extremely low, and since it was only $100 rather than spend money registering it, I would rather just buy another, if it was stolen. One night when I arrived at the station near my apartment, I got on my bicycle and started peddling home. I then remembered that I didn't have any orange juice or anything to eat in the morning, so I quickly turned around and began peddling back towards the convenience store across from the station. I got to the light and was waiting for it to change, when suddenly a very out of breath Japanese man ran up beside me and identified himself as a police officer. Then his partner a young woman caught up to him and me. They explained to me that many bicycles had been stolen from around that station. So when I suddenly turned around and raced away, these two undercover police officers thought they had found their thief and chased after me. The officer asked to see the registration for the bicycle I was riding and I didn't have one, so he remained suspicious that the bike might be stolen and that I might be a bicycle thief. So I pointed the the key that was in the bicycle lock, and said "Kagi arimasu". Satisfied that I was not an international bicycle thief, and their dreams of making promotion by shattering an international bicycle theft syndicate dashed, they let me go. I got my Juice and something to eat for breakfast from the convenience store and returned home to my apartment.
