    Just watched this video in Jan. '24. Quick trip to Harbor Freight for 2 ratchet straps and within 30 minutes, I finally had my temporary spare mounted in the trunk instead of left behind in the garage. Now I've got one less thing to worry about on my 120 mile round trip to Chicago which occurs multiple times per month.

    Minor comment, I would add a foam pad to put on the side of the road, and a flat plastic or wood plate to put under the jack to disperse the load. Don't want to see the tesla fall off the jack.

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před 3 lety

      I was going to mention packing an old t-shirt to kneel on. The metal plate, item #6, distributes the weight for the jack. Re-reading your post I think you mean if the jack is on a uneven or loose surface? Yes, that would make sense. My assumption is that most people would be jacking the car on an asphalt road surface.

    An excellent option for any Tesla owner going on a road trip. While driving around my city, I will use the Tesla Service if I ever get a flat. I don't want the weight of the spare tire kit slowing my M3P and negatively affecting my range. To be honest, I don't care about range as much as I do the performance. :-)

    What did you mean by if the drive tire is damaged, install the spare on the non drive wheel? Do you mean take the good tire from the front and place it in the rear and put the space up front?

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před rokem

      Yes, it's a standard practice to install the spare tire on the non-drive wheel. Yes, for a RWD, place the spare on the front tire, full size on the rear. For AWD, it's still not a bad idea since the car has a RWD bias.

  • @wrenchgearsadventures
    @wrenchgearsadventures Před 2 lety +1

    When matching up a spare, the 80 and 50 numbers you mention at 8:00 doesn't really matter at all. Those are the speed rating for the tire. 80 kph = 50 mph. Most all temp spares are rated for that. The more important numbers to worry about are the T135/80R18 on the sidewall. The spare tire you choose needs to be almost the exact same height as the tire that came off the car. (The T135/80R18 does seem to be the right size spare to use on a model 3, but just double check the overall tire heights if the car has something other than a P235/40R19). If its off too much, and the revolutions per mile/kilometer are too different from the other 3 wheels, the computer is going to think there is a problem, and drivability may be affected. The other thing to worry about is the wheel stud spacing. Obviously, it needs to be exactly the proper one, or the wheel won't bolt on to the car. The spacing is 5 (bolts) x 114.3 mm, which is actually a very common spacing in the automotive industry. Many cars have this 114.3 mm so finding one will be easy, just make sure you are close to the same diameter of the original tire.

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm just stating that this specific Genesis spare tire fits the Model 3 has the 80 50 on the wheel. There are some other Genesis spares out there that that don't work. It's been used by a few people and confirmed to work and not give errors. Yes, it needs to fit the bolt pattern and match the tire height of the existing car.

    Ratchet straps are great because they are strong and can exert a significant amount of torque. Is there a concern of over torquing and potentially bending the metal attachment points? I would be a bit concerned about this and wonder if this could lead to cracking the glass.

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před 2 lety

      I just ratchet until it is snug. I don’t see a problem with the glass as I would with a heavy roof rack that is putting direct pressure on glass. That attachment points are strong framing.

  • @balahmay
    @balahmay Před 2 lety

    I like your approach to this. Nice job finding this alternative approach. But here are a couple questions I have: If you had let the air out of your tire, could you have still used the regular jack pad? I noticed the top of the jack appeared to be twisting to the left as it was raised. Is that a concern? Is strapping the tire up that way secure enough? What would happen if heaven forbid, you had some kind of head on impact? Would the tire stay there or could it slip free and slam into the back seat?

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před 2 lety +1

      1. Yes, it’s possible that if the tire is too low that the jack pad does not fit. I suppose you could carry a piece of wood so that you could drive under the tire could work. 2. The scissor jack with a flat top instead of the one I had would be superior. But they are hard to find. 3. The tire ratchet strap is solid. Maybe using a higher rated (2000-3000 lb) will give more piece of mind. 30 lbs x 80mph = 2400 lbs of force

      I’m guessing you may have a trim piece that covers the exposed metal framing. Tesla is always changing things. I haven’t seen how it is attached. Maybe it can be temporarily removed it to see where you can mount the spare.

      @@MTNRanger I found a place to attach it further in the trim piece. Got it mounted! Thanks for the idea. I'm using the full kit with case from Modern Spare.

    Seems like there’s plenty a room in the frunk if you MUST carry a spare. Seems really Mickey Mouse trying to strap it up underneath

      Unfortunately, that is how the market is going. Other than being optional on the new EV pickups, I don't know of any EV that includes a spare tire.

      @@MTNRanger you are definitely correct, just a crime that basic safety is ignored. They can design us a frunk for beer and ice but keeping us and our families from being stranded is just to much. Nice touch with the ratchets for better securing by the way

    You can’t really dictate which tire you get a flat on so It doesn’t really make sense to advise someone to install the spare on a “non-drive” axle. The flat tire is where the flat tire is. No way I’m going to remove another tire, and move it to the drive side. Makes no sense

    • @MTNRanger
      @MTNRanger  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, you can do it. Just jack up a good drive tire and replace it with the flat tire temporarily. Then swap it with the non-drive tire. It takes more work, but it can be done.

    Will the Hundai Genesis 18x4 Compact Spare tire fit my LR Model 3 AWD equipped with 19” Sport Wheels?

      The RWD and AWD use the same size brakes, so it will fit. The performance uses larger brakes, so I don't know if they fit or not.

      @@nechesnm yes. For example I just measured the 18” wheel and tire on my car as 25.5” high (26.25” if not on car).
