3 Ace Frehley Licks From 1977

  • Here's the next Three-For-All lesson with 3 Ace Frehley Licks From 1977.
I've had a number of requests for Ace Frehley from viewers and when I woke up today to prepare a new lesson for the channel, this was what I was feeling and actually wanted to create, so I just went with it.
Truth be told, I love Ace Frehley. I'm sure that statement may confuse a few of my friends and viewers out there, but it's the truth. He's a humble human being that found himself in an extraordinary circumstance after he joined KISS and they basically dominated the rock music scene in the 1970s. While there were plenty of other acts on the scene that could play circles around them, there's just something magical and interesting about the classic KISS era and I feel Ace Frehley was a HUGE part of that (or at least for me).
This lesson features a number of expressive and signature moves from Ace and should be a great starting point (or continuation) for those searching for those gritty and rough-around-the-edges blues-rock ideas that so many guitarists have played over the decades within the classic rock genre. From accented and precise string bending phrases, to "hybrid" pentatonic scale usage, open-string pull-off licks, and much more.
There's plenty in this lesson to keep you occupied and if locating some of the "mess-and-finesse" licks and phrases is something you're wanting to add to your playing style and "bag of tricks" - look no further than borrowing some of those ideas from Ace.
This episode also includes a few jokes and silly moments thrown-in, which I felt everyone could use a good laugh (especially these days), so you'll hopefully see through some of the shtick and actually lock-in to some of the useful concepts, phrases, and ideas shared in this lesson.

I"m 52 years old and remember like it was yesterday when my parents bought me "ALIVE" for xmas because they couldn't get Dynasty as it was sold out, I"m so glad it was sold out , "ALIVE" blew my mind and started the total obsession with wanting to play guitar just like Ace Frehley, and opened my interest to all the early Kiss albums and the love of playing guitar.

What I think also gets missed with Ace is just how powerful his rhythm playing is, too. When Gene and Paul are running around the stage, it falls to the lead guitarist and the drummer in Kiss to hold the songs together. Ace's tone was also excellent.

Who was influenced by Ace Frehley? Here's a little list - Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wylde, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and I could add to the list until I'm blue in the face. Now he's probably not considered the best guitarist but the most influential. If you listen to Kiss Alive listen to all of his leads. He's got great solos on that album. No Ace is not a shredder at all, but in his early years he can play some really great riffs and solos. a couple great riffs- parasite, cold gin. Pentatonic riff that's in love gun I could go on and on. Thanks for the video David!

I'm 56 years old, play guitar every day. Sure EVH, Rhoads, Yngwie etc eventually came along to inspire and influence me, but I still use the licks I picked up from Ace as a kid. When me and my friend started our first band at 15, the only songs we knew in common was Black Diamond which of course had one of the best Ace solos.

Every guitarist, songwriter, and producer should watch every single one of your videos, no matter what level they think they have achieved. I'm constantly and sincerely humbled by your work and knowledge of the instrument and music in general. Your generosity with it is also astounding. Thank you so much for all you do.

Back in the mid 80's I used to go to the Marquee club in Wardour St. and watch Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Back then you remembered as much as you could then spent all night learning what you'd seen and heard. Dumpy actually played that hyper-pentatonic lick and I've played it ever since! I never knew where it came from :o)

Trying to copy Ace is surprisingly hard, mostly because his timing and rhythms are pretty intricate. I think that's largely why I never tire of hearing his solos. They're rhythmically interesting.

Ace sometimes is denigrated as not being a top player, but I don't think the guy ever played a non-kickass solo. And his playing had everything one wanted or needed in rock guitar in the 1970's: blasting, pentatonic/minor/chromatic runs, a lot of super fast and super hot pull-offs and hammer-ons, a ton of punch to every note, and just enough heaviness, flash and grittiness to fit the style of the music that Kiss played. Add the fact that he played a Les Paul through Marshalls, it was full-on, classic 70's rock and roll. I was more into Mick Ronson and Marc Bolan, but I remember the first few Kiss albums were full of good rockers, and I learned a few of those riffs, just like every other guy (or girl) with a guitar in their hands did back in the day. Great vid here, as per usual.

Was 9 yrs old when I picked up Kiss Alive 1 and later Destroyer! Ace was unreal and Alive 2 just blew me away! Moved on to other bands but Ace's influence still exists in my 78 Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Standard and 78 50 watt Marshall JMP, as part of my gear!

That second lick made me smile as it took me back to my playroom circa 1978 jammin' to ALIVE II with my guitar (tennis racket) as a rowdy 8 yr old. I have loved Ace my whole life man and I really enjoyed this video.

Hi! I enjoyed this video a lot. I was never a fan of Kiss growing up in London in the 70s, I wasn’t really exposed to them. A mate in school gave me an EP of theirs which I still have and I think it has Shock Me and Christine. I was getting into UFO at the time so didn’t really like the Kiss sound on that EP or their image. I really liked this lesson though, I always loved the grittier players more than the constant up and down shredding. Gary Moore and company. Where I live now I know a lot of guitar pros and teachers and they are always telling me to listen to some Kiss 😃
Lick 3 is definitely going into my bag of tricks! A cool sounding lick and achievable for my style of playing and my level.
Very interesting today, thank you 👍

Everything about Ace Frehley inspiring many to pick up a guitar is true! Im a 90s kid I grew up to a lot of bands and guitarists that were actually first inspired by Ace in the 70s before they became big. True story i stopped playing guitar for 7 or 8 years (its a travesty, even i cant believe I let go for so long) and I started listening to KISS and watching Ace on youtube and in my head im like "Wow how come I never seen or heard this before, this is awesome!" Thanks to Ace I picked my guitar again and its been a year non-stop everyday.
