Books from the 90s are really old?? Aww come on, that Lisa Stansfield song is from the 80s. Be gentle on us, ma. Love the video!
😂😂 no shade. I was born in the 80s so I can admit the 90s was a minute ago lol. I’m actually even more impressed when I find a book from the 90s that can be a hit today.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages New subscriber. I really like your diverse bookshelves and your videos.
Thank you so much 🥰😊
I was going to write that I had never heard of The Good Luck Girls but it sounds good. I went to wishlist it and apparently I have owned it for three years😅. I also may have a problem😂
😂😂 Amazon stay dragging us! But I appreciate that they won’t let us waste our bread 🙌🏾
The hair is giving honey 🎉❤
Thank youuu! 💜💜😊
I appreciate this video. It's hard to find authentic Black Authors in the fantasy genre.
You think so?? Honestly there’s A LOT now. My shelves are filled with Black fantasy. Especially over the past 5 years I’ve seen a huge jump in Black fantasy authors getting published. I just have to read more of them.
I'm glad YT randomly served up your content! I loved your recommendations and your personality as you talk about your some of your favorite books! New subbie! I'm definitely a fantasy girlie and I hadn't heard about any of these books before, so I appreciate the fresh perspective and they've been added to my TBR.
Yessss 🙌🏾 I love when YT shows me to my people! Thank you so much for your support 🙏🏾 I be having so much fun on here and I hope to keep expanding your to-be-read list!
Rage of Dragons is my favorite fantasy book...full stop. Jemison's The Broken Earth Trilogy is has been on my TBR for a while but I finally purchased all three and that is the next series I'm going to read after my current book...Great Video!!!
Yesssss! Crossing our fingers we’ll hear about book #3 at some point. So you can definitely handle the brilliance that is the Broken earth. I hope you enjoy it 💜💜
The Broken Earth Trilogy is brilliant. Jemisin’s world building is amazing each series I’ve read is a different world with different magic systems. She is one of my favorite authors.
Broken Earth Trilogy is one of my top 5 favorite fantasy series
What are your other 4? 👀👀
@@ChocolateCoveredPages No particular order: Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb, Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, Suneater by Christopher Rucchio, Poppy war R.F Kuang
Okay!! I plan to go back to assassin’s apprentice so I can get to the other books . Not too much happens in that first book. I read mistborn and loved it but didn’t go to book 2 so I feel a lil guilty starting the stormlight. Do you feel it’s necessary to read the other books in the first 2 series before getting to it? I hated the poppy war so much 😩 I’m not a fan of super war-focused fantasy.
I love reading books
Me too 😊
I loved The Fifth Season! The whole Broken Earth Trilogy is chef’s kiss. It was so hard to read but it was worth it! Love NK down 4L. I wish I could reread The Fifth Season for the first time. ❤❤❤
So good. I know I have to put every other book down I’m reading to focus on the obelisk gate. I’m hoping to finally finish this out by the end of the year.
Check out Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark. Damn good story. Short but great.
Appreciate the rec! 🙌🏾
Omg! I loooooved My Soul To Keep! The series is 🔥
I really need to continue the series now that I’m over here talking about it. I want to know what happened after the craziness in book 1.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages girrrrrl! A lot happens! Be prepared😀
@@itstheericajean 😮 oh I’m excitedddd
Yes! That was my first read of Due's books and it did not disappoint, and it still holds up now!
It definitely does!
Your hair is beautiful 😊
Thank you so much love 💕
Gurl I've been looking for us in the fantasy author world. Thx for sharing.
We are definitely OUTCHEA! I love searching for us in genres that the people say we not in.
See also:
Wild Seed by Octavia Butler (one of my all-time faves)
A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djeli Clark
Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark
Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
Lone Women by Victor LaValle
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
I’m looking forward to wild seed (it’s on my shelves and waiting) but I want to finish the xyogenesis series by her first. Dead Djinn is absolutely on my list. I’ve read Friday black. Very unique. Victor Lavalle is one of my faves and lone women is 👌🏾 I typically put him more in the horror category as opposed to fantasy 🤔 The Underground Railroad…I may have to reread that lol. Thank you for these!
The Good Luck Girls sounds intriguing!
It really is so underrated!
I hear that about YA. I make a beeline for YA fantasy whenever I'm in the bookstore. Thanks for all these recommendations. Can't wait to learn more about your interests.
Yes YA fantasy seems to always be a lot easier to digest but can still be good. So glad you’re here 💜💜
I highly recommend blood at the root by Ladarrion Williams.
>>>
A teenager on the run from his past finds the family he never knew existed and the community he never knew he needed at an HBCU for the young, Black, and magical. Enroll in this fresh fantasy debut unlike anything you've seen before.
I have given this one a soft DNF. I got about halfway in and realized that I wasn’t really in the mood for a Young Adult fantasy. But I do have plans to go back to it. I thought the concept was dope.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages I can respect that. Marvellers is also a cute middle school with magic vibes with a Louisiana influence as well. I’m currently reading children of blood and bone (book 1). I’ve been struggling to start legendborn, myself. I’m not sure why. Could just be myself struggling to attach to the story right now.
@ferhottie Legendborn was a hard DNF for me 😂 I liked Children of blood and bone
@@ChocolateCoveredPagesIt was ok. I got it on audible. That was the only way I could get through it. You should check out Bad Karma Book 1 by W. S. Burrowes. This book is part of the Egyptian Goddess Series.
Thank you for making these recommendations!! I’ve been looking into reading more books since I’m pretty picky, and I’m definitely checking some of these out! 💖
😂 I’m picky too so I get it!
Great recommendations! I still need to get to Rita Woods, Tananarive Due and Rebecca Roanhorse! The fifth season is definitely a tough one for beginners but it’s really good! Another that I would recommend on the indie side is Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards. Very much epic fantasy so not for beginners
Ooo thanks for the rec! Kimoni Legacy looks GOOD. Added to my list.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages I hope you enjoy it! It’s a little slow but I love being in the world. It’s giving very much pre colonial African vibes
I really enjoyed watching this video. I love how you explain how the characters are reacting. I have added quite a few of these to my list. I have had N.K. Jemison on my shelf for years, all three books, and have never read them. Thank you for taking the time to share.
This makes me so happy 😊 Yes ma’am please dust off that NK Jemison. The audiobook is also a great way to experience it.
Thank you for sharing this list. I can’t wait to dive into these books this fall
Fall is really perfect for fantasy 🍂🍁
You are a treasure and a delight! You're upbeat commentary is enlivening!
I'm surprised you didn't mention Imaro by Charles R. Saunders; it predates all of these books! Back in the days of the big Conan and Tarzan rediscovery in the 70s Charles started writing what he called "sword and soul" novels. Great stuff & a pioneer that should be remembered. Check them out.
🙏🏾 thank you so much! I’ve not heard of Charles R Saunders but I’ll definitely look him up. Thanks for the rec!
@@ChocolateCoveredPagesHe's dead though! He is the father of Black Fantasy. Equivalent to Octavia Butler for Afrofuturism. Sadly, he is an unknown author who subconciously created a masterpiece.
@joshuaj.chinda9873 That’s okay. I read dead authors too. You’re getting me excited!! I can’t believe I never heard of him.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages He's quite known In Canada where I live. He's book Imaro is like a Black versión of Conan the Barbarian.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages You're welcome 😁
I have The Rage of Dragons but I need to start it. I just grabbed the African Immortals Series. Fifth Season and the entire Broken Earth Series is phenomenal. N.K. Jemisin is one of the best world builders I’ve read. Each of her series is a different world and different magic systems. Her Inheritance Trilogy was among the first fantasy books I’ve read. I am shocked not seeing Tomi Adeyemi or Nnedi Okorafor on this list. Nnedi might be my favorite author. She’s created an incredible world full of complexity and magic with different creatures and worlds. Check out Who Fears Death, the Binti series, and the Akata Series.
Yes NK Jemisin is on another level! I didn’t include Tomi because her series is so popular. I figure most people interested in Black Fantasy definitely know about her books already. Regarding, Nnedi Okorafor I’ve only read Binti book 1 and I wasn’t too into it. I am interested in definitely checking out Who fears death!
Yaaassssss for Tananarive Due and NK Jamison! Their books had my jaw on the floor repeatedly. And yes, Jemison is a very unique storyteller. Brilliant indeed. Next up for me is Rage of Dragons. Very excited to finally experience that one.
For SURE. If you already love both of them I KNOW you have good taste so you’ll love rage of dragons 😂
Ooh, i def want to read My Soul to Keep. Have you heard of the author Desiree? She has an urban fantasy series called the Hoodwinked Series and I think the author Natavia does fantasy too. Ohh and LA Banks, i believe they write about vampires, just some books i have heard about in the literary streets.
I have heard of Hoodwinked and I know the series you’re talking about by Natavia. It’s on my list. I have only read her urban fiction…Snow White and the seven hustlers lol. That’s a goodie. Oh you took it way back to LA Banks! I used to have a bunch of those lil mass market paperbacks from that series.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages oh girl, i loved Snow White and the seven hustlers lol, it’s one of those books i really have to convince others to read cause the title is such a throw off. 😂
@Meems23 HA the title is what made me pick it up! You know I’m here for all the ratchetery 😂😂
Thank you sooo much for your channel ❤ This is my first time here and I immediately hit the subscribe button once you started speaking. Thank you for sharing your love 💕 of reading with us. I appreciate you 😊
Oh it’s such a pleasure. I’m so happy you’re here! 💜💜
@@ChocolateCoveredPages ☺️ Thank you
I loved beasts of Prey by Ayana Grey. I am hoping to read rage of Dragons very soon. N.K. JEMISIN is on my radar for sure! Loved this video!
Thank you! If I had to compare the two I’d say rage of dragons is more enjoyable by NK just writes her butt off. So you can’t go wrong with either.
Thank you for the recommendations so glad I found you
I’m glad you found me too sis 🥰🤗
Loving your recommendations videos! Can’t wait to dive into some of these! 💜
Thank you! I hope you find some good ones 😊
Your hair is beautiful!
🥰🥰 thank you!!
I think I'll check ou Beasts of Prey. Thanks.
Hope you like it! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I loved this video. The only books I haven't read yet are Remeberance and My Soul To Keep, so now they are next up on my TBR
Oooo so you’re a fantasy GWORL! Love it 🙌🏾
the good luck girls and the squeal are both unrated books to me! I love that series!!
Sooo underrated! I never read the sequel but now that I’m talking about this book, I really should!
@@ChocolateCoveredPages definitely do!!
Evan Winter is an amazing author. Hunt down anything he goes asap. I've read the first two books of his trilogy and they were both fantastic reads.
Yep read them both. Just waiting on Book 3 to come out.
New sub. I needed this video ive read some of these but others ive never heard of so gonna check them out 😊
Yesss 🙌🏾 I hope you find something you enjoy!
So glad my algorithm brought me here. New subbie! 🥰
Me tooooo. So happy to have you! 🥰🥰
I've never considered Adult Fantasy fiction books. Never really found it alluring until now. I may give one that you recommended a try. Glad your video popped up randomly in my feeds. Keep Grinding.
Thank you! I’m not sure what you mean though 🤔 Adult fantasy isn’t non-fiction.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages Duh...2 thoughts running in my head simultaneously. You are correct. I will edit my note. Suffice it to say, Adult Fantasy 'Fiction' has never been a consideration for reading until now. I stay in the non-fiction arena.
@middlechamber3574 Ahh okay! That makes sense. Dip your toe in and see if you like it. Also there’s many sub-genres. Pay attention to any fantasy tv shows/movies you already like. That’s going to be the type of fantasy that you will love the most.
Thank you!! This is right on time for me. I always love your videos!
Yessss fantasy girlies to the front! And thank you so much babes 🫶🏾
Okayyy the algorithm is working ! So glad I stumbled across your channel ☺️ new subbie 🥹
Ayyyee! So glad you’re here 😊
These sound really good! I have The Fifth Season, but I haven't read it yet. I have some further recommendations for you. I just finished "The Dance of Shadows," by Rogba Payne, and it was outstanding! It's fantasy, based on African mythology/folk tales. It's hard to find though. I got my copy in a book subscription box from Inkstone Books in the U.K. If you can get your hands on a copy, it's really good. Some books and authors that are maybe more Sci-Fi than strict fantasy, you can't go wrong with Octavia Butler. "Parable of the Sower" and "Parable of the Talents" are a dystopian duology written in the 1980s, and set in our time right now. A chilling thing about it, there's a corrupt political candidate in the second book whose campaign slogan is "Make America Great Again"! A more recent fantasy/Sci-Fi book by a current author would be "The Principle of Moments," by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson. This was published in December 2023, has time travel moments, and I think maybe an alternate-reality London setting. I've not read it yet, but it's on my bookshelf just waiting for me to get to it.
Thank you for these!! Dance of shadows sounds Amazing!! You’re right…it is hard to find but I’m relentless when it comes to finding books and I am buying my copy at Blackwells. I’m not super big on Sci-fi BUT I loved Dawn by Octavia E Butler. I read Parable of the sower. I will check out your other rec too 😊
Repping the east coast right along with you, new subbie alert 🚨
Ayyyyee happy to have you! 🙌🏾
Have you ever made a list of all the books you've read?? If sooo where is it?? I'd love to see your reading journey from the beginning up to the present day🎉🎉
Oh I love this question! I don’t have a record of every single book BUT I have something pretty close to it. If you go to my Goodreads you can see as far back to 2008 and I also tried to note as many childhood books i could remember. HTTPS://goodreads.com/keyona
@@ChocolateCoveredPages THANK YOU!!!! I WILL GO BACK AND LOOK IT UP
Im so glad I found this channel. Thank you for this video!! I just subscribed!!
Listen I’m glad too! 😂 so happy you’re here 🫶🏾
This is my first time viewing your videos and now you have a new subbie ❤
Yayyy 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Welcome!! 🤗
Rosewater trilogy recommend big time. all of Nnedi Okorafor books. missed off the G Ms Octavia Butler come on now. Thanks for the rage of dragons recommendation
This of course is in no way an exhaustive list lol. I didn’t include Octavia Butler because the book of hers that I love is science fiction. I haven’t found a Nnedi that I liked personally. I’m looking forward to picking up Rosewater as I’ve heard great things.
The Rage of Dragons is my favorite
SAME. I actually liked that one more than Fires of Vengeance.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages I can def see that. I honestly felt like there was consistency throughout both. A lot of series fall short on that second book
Oh yea the writing was definitely still on point. It’s a complete ME thing lol. Book 2 just became extremely war-focused. That’s my least favorite type of fantasy. I wanted more trials 😩
@@ChocolateCoveredPages and here i am always ready to fight lmfao
Rage is the bomb. I I love Tau and his determination. It’s awe inspiring!!
Nnedi Okorafor and Chinua Achebe check them out they're great authors.
I have read these authors. I’m certainly overdue for a Chinua Achebe. I haven’t read him in so many years.
You look gorgeous!
🥰 thank you so much
Great recommendations. Have you read Crown of blood and thorns?
Thanks! No I haven’t heard of this one…worth a read?
N.K. Jemisin is definitely the G.O.AT! Her books are so detailed
, that I too have to go take a nap, after reading The Broken Earth Series!😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 seriously! But we’d do it all over again because her writing is worth it 🙌🏾
@@Nasriyn9 She's not the GOAT come on now you're capping. Chinua Achebe is the Greatest Black Author of all time if that is where you're heading. He sold 20,000000 millón copies of his debut novel Things fall apart. No other Black Author has achieved that success .
@@joshuaj.chinda9873 I said, what I said! My opinion! If you don’t like it, too bad.
Love your videos!! 😊You are so beautiful and well put together in every single video ❤👏👏Amazing recs I can’t wait to check out so many of them 🎉🎉
Thank you so much love 😊💜 I can’t be hopping on here any old way. My mother would get on me 😂
Amazing video. This is one of my favorite from you. So many books you made me want to read. You are so beautiful
Tell me your favorite part 😊
Great video! 🎉
Thank you! 😊
Ngl i recently started the fifth season im struggling a bit because i usually do not like second person narration. I am working on it tho because I find it very interesting.
Might I suggest the audiobook? I found it easier to digest. You’re not alone but I promise the strange narration is so worth it once it all comes together!
@ChocolateCoveredPages I was actually already using the audiobook.
Oh damn 😩
Very great recommendations thank you. Have you read the series by Tomi Adeyemi Children of Blood and Bone? Great fantasy series.
I have read the first book in this series and i definitely enjoyed it! The only reason I left it out was because I figured that one was pretty popular.
New Sub! Love your channel!
Thank you so much love 😊😊
Hello! I enjoyed your video. You gave some very interesting recs
Consider me subscribed!!
Hi! Oh that makes me so happy 😊
Her saying "This book was written in the 90s it is OLLD" makes me think of kids going all wide-eyed/mouth open when you tell them you're an age above 30. LOL
Ouuuu this was fun
Thank you for watching! 🥰🥰
Evan Winter looks interesting, I'm cool with MK Jiemeson, didn't really like that book
Okay! Hopefully Evan’s writing works better for you
Do you have any Cozy Fantasy books by black authors you'd recommend?
I can’t say I recommend it because I didn’t finish the first book in the series BUT you can check out Kimberly Lemming’s series. The first book is That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon lol. It has great reviews from trustworthy folks. I only sat it down because I got distracted by something else. From what I read it was really funny and light hearted.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages I'll have to look it up, thank you
Sooo old… the‘90s…👀😂 13:19
Yall not gonna stop dragging me for saying that I see! 😩 I meant in relation to all the other books I was talking about lol
You said a long time ago like it was written in the Victorian era. I must be archaic. 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I almost choked! I meant in relation to the other books I was mentioning 😩
@ChocolateCoveredPages please don't choke! 🤣 I enjoyed your video. I'm taking baby steps into fantasy, and your recommendations were great. 💙
Afraid of fantasy?
Yes. Some people are very hesitant to pick up fantasy books.
@@ChocolateCoveredPages you’re probably right we about ignorant on a lot subjects. Humans in general us black Americans in particular.
"Dis book be OLD y'all!" 1997?
I most definitely don’t talk like that. Furthermore, it’s unfortunate that in a 30 minute video filled with book recommendations that’s the part that stuck out to you 🙄
@@mercster Grow up man! If you don't like her channel take a scramp or continue being a 🤡
