I wanted to make a video showing what classes you must take in order to get a Bachelors Degree in Physics. I also give a brief description of those classes.
So true. What got me interested was not the quantum/nuclear physics and astrophysics stuff either. it was the classical physics and electric/ electronic stuff🤭

remember one thing. math is used to supplement physics, not supplant it. no excuse is allowable for any teacher to throw a bunch of equations, formulas, proofs, etc., without a proper explanation of the underlying concepts that buttress the math. if you need to, meet with your classmates, and if they don't want to, then do it your self, understand fully well all physics concepts. and go no further in your study until you know what the term 'all physics happens at the margin' means. i had profs say this time and again without ever attempting to explain what that meant. it was only when i heard it for the 100th time that i stopped a class and said that it was time for them to either explain what it meant, or admit they didn't know what the hell they were talking about.....
How would you explain the meaning of “all physics happens at the margin”? I am really interested. It sounds like the way you solve physics problems. When ever you have to find a physically acceptable solution you will often solve for the boundary conditions? My lecturers have never said anything like that but then again I do not live in an English speaking country
I went into physics because I liked math and how it all fit together. Also out of curiosity about everyday silly little things, such as wondering at age 6 why my thumb and index finger appeared to merge together when I brought them close enough, in front of a bright background. I must have been a puzzle to my parents. I teach intro physics and I try to make it as easy as possible, not as hard as possible. And I think that reflects what most physics professors strive for. The reason intro physics is so hard for students is that there is indeed a lot of material, but mainly because it is often their first introduction to a whole new way of looking at the world. It's like learning a new language and also an entirely new culture. All in the span of 2 semesters. We make it as easy as possible, but the rest is in the end of the motivated student. It is normal to have to spend a lot of time practicing before it starts making sense. Once one gets over that hurdle, many of the classes that follow get easier, even though they cover more advanced material. But yes, we want our engineers to have a solid understanding of physics, because we don't want them to build bridges that crumble. And a solid of understanding of physics can only come with a lot of hard work.

I'm currently in grade 10 and have been really passionate about physics all my life. It's the subject I know I'm going to go into. Other than just somewhat aimlessly learning theories and reading textbooks, it's great to know what I'm in for in university in such a concrete form. I really appreciate it!

Excellent video. I’m a second year engineering major. Did all the calculus and differential equations and physics 1,2,3. Trying to decide if I want to switch to physics. This helped a lot.

Oh man I remember taking classical mechanics, what a ride that was. CAlculus of variations leading to Euler and Lagrange equations, woo, that class was brutal but lovely.
I remember reading through the Course Catalog as a Freshman and coming across stuff like: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Dynamics, the Schrödinger Equation, Quantum Statistics, etc. and wondering what I got myself into! Don't let it freak you out.
Seems like a Physics degree needs a lot of discipline. Not sure if I can have that much discipline for 3 years. I might get frustrated after a while. Sound bad I know. I want to do it but I am afraid that I might get frustrated.
RoyalDomi You're talking to a guy that got average grades in high school, got a D in freshman level college English, but managed to turn it around and get straight A's last semester in 400 level math and physics. For me, the discipline came once I realized I couldn't have the life I wanted unless I got my priorities straight and learned to try my best consistently
Ooh boy, I took classical mechanics at the same time as calculus 3, and that was definitely confusing for a long time, but by the middle of it, we were talking about topics in calculus that I basically just assume was true at the beginning of classical. It was definitely an interesting way to learn it, and it definitely made calculus more of an investment when I saw a proof and thought, ‘Oooooh, that’s the professor meant when she said this thing three weeks ago.’

To go into physics you need to have natural inclinations to think intuitively. I think physicists are in many ways discovered. In HS I took physics and it was one of the easiest classes. Everyone else had difficulties. I went on to get a graduate degree. Still love it 25 years later.
It's really interesting seeing when things are studied in the American system compared to the UK where I currently study. In the UK we only do straight subjects so I only take physics and relavent maths modules and don't have to do anything from other courses. Most of the things which you mention in the second year is covered in our first year, and the course is overall shorter compared to going to university in the US.
In the us, our college curriculum covers some things we might’ve took in high school which may increase the degree program to 4 years instead of 3 years like how a lot of the world does
I totally agree with you dude about perspective of physics as a subject and teachers who teach it. I think it's because of these people that we start hating some subject.
I like physics as it helps apply mathematics to real life, going in to develop different computer power design. Computational physics is were I am excited to go into now, only a freshman now though I will be taking physics next fall. Your videos are really helpful thank you.
Ty man. I finished high school a couple months ago and am 3 months away from starting my freshmen year in physics. Although I live and will study in Croatia i don't think it is too different from what you talked about so all this is info is pretty helpful. Also I am kind of scared because I don't know if I will have the chops for all of it since it seems pretty difficult on first glance, but I think all I can do at this point is just try and find out.
To me, as a physics major in my senior year, I feel like intro physics is difficult because the formulas are motivated and derived by a deep understanding of not just the world but also mathematics like multivariable calculus. The students are expected to use these formulas as though they have a fundamental understanding of them in order to solve problems, but they can never have a fundamental understanding because it is their first year. That's how I look at it anyway.
I wish you could have taken my introductory physics course. You'd get to see it doesn't have to be as hard as professors make it and still get everything you need out of it. I was one of those first type students, more interested in the Newtonian stuff than the fancy black hole, special relativity stuff.

Seeing the following equation helped me realize that Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation was truly universal as in it applies to studies not normally associated with Physics. This is a formula that I read in a graduate level Economics course book at 3AM in a dorm. It was introduced to me by a Economics Graduate Student .Knowing that I was studying Physics he asked me, 'Does this equation look familiar to you?" Fₘ = k(Wₚ - Wₒ)(MₒMₚ)/[(Sₚ - Sₒ)]² where Fₘ is the force of migration, k is an arbitrary constant, Wₒ is the prevailing wage in City Sₒ. Wₚ is the prevailing wage in City Sₚ, Mₒ is the population of City Sₒ, Mₚ is the population of City Sₚ, and. the quantity (Sₚ - Sₒ) is the distance between the cities Sₒ and Sₚ The equation describes the fact that the migratory force between two cities is directly proportional to the product of the difference of the prevailing wages in the two cities and the product of the population of the two cities, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance that separates the two cities. It was an epiphany. It is basically no different than F₉ = G m₁m₂/{(r₂ - r₁)]² which is Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation. Enjoy your exploration.
My advice if you're interested in majoring in physics is to take the introductory physics and calc classes and if you do well in them do it, if you don't do well in those you should probably consider another major.
Wow thanks for that video. Im thinking about studing physics but i keep hearing that its hard and that only 10 people out of 120 make it to the end of the degree in my country. To any potential first year about to delve into physics , heed this gentleman's words , introductory physics can be deceivingly hard , like , getting a 20% in a test for the first time hard , and the math , make sure your math game is on point.

Engineering is just natural sciences applied to method, in my opinion. Engineers, mathematicians, physicists, they study and work similar topics but slightly different applications, so you can get your bachelor's degree in engineering and then move to fields of research in physics later I want to get into mechatronics and study robotics and AI. I already have background in programming and basic computer science, so when I get into university I plan to either get into electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or computer science itself

An error when sb starts a degree/major, class is class u can do what u want and research what u curious in, so you dont need only to follow the lectures and your notes about them but u can search deeply 4 u own and find a passion, yep, college/major is a "ticket" but u knowledge is got by u love not by u marks... I'm in my first year of college, i have never taken a single physics or calculus class in my life and I'm majoring in a social science(but honestly I don't know what to pursue in my major) but lately I been having an interest in physics and I want to give it try but I fear that i'll just regret it and end up on the same boat i'm already on in my major

If you're good a math you won't be good at physics, you just need to understand math. It's a different kind of thinking entirely, math is just a way to quantify what you're talking about.
No matter what people say to feel superior, high level chemistry requires a lot of math too, not as much as physic but a lot none the less. I have a friend who is currently doing his Dr in physical chemistry and he took all the math courses you take as a physicist (in bachelor an master) in addition to all the other stuff because the mandatory math courses for chemistry are just not nearly enough.
Love physics because I am so intrigued by how the world works but for some reason I really hate math. Idk unapplied math is just a headache but when we associate it with objects, and trajectories and etc it gets interesting
Thank u for this explanation... For me i study physics but it wasn't like this.... Instead of studying those basics u mentioned we studied chemistry and simple math +some of newtonien physics in the first two semesters.. After it they made us jump directly into electromagnetic and quantum mechanics.... Now I understand why I'm still fighting to understand what the hell is this lol!.... There is a lot of things and basics missing.
Crazy that what they have in USA in third year (Electrodynamics and statistical mechanics) we have here in europe in second semester. Also it’s weird that you have special relativity towards the end of electrodynamics, we had it in the begining and basically derived magnetostatics from it (things like Lorentz force, which I’ve seen in Grifiths is just 'given'.)

I’ve taken Ap physics (In my junior year of high school ) I really enjoy everything physics has to offer. I’ve decided I want to be a physics major and want to know where to start. I’m still a junior but I used past tense to show that the school year is almost over( 4 weeks till summer)
In a way it is for the first few physics courses. Just a little bit more in depth. Most universities would actually count AP physics credit towards the first semester physics in college.

Houston Sisk I would advise against that if at all possible. The federal loans are OK, but the private loans could screw you over.

Although I live and will study in Croatia i don't think it is too different from what you talked about so all this is info is pretty helpful. Also I am kind of scared because I don't know if I will have the chops for all of it since it seems pretty difficult on first glance, but I think all I can do at this point is just try and find out.

To me, as a physics major in my senior year, I feel like intro physics is difficult because the formulas are motivated and derived by a deep understanding of not just the world but also mathematics like multivariable calculus. The students are expected to use these formulas as though they have a fundamental understanding of them in order to solve problems, but they can never have a fundamental understanding because it is their first year. That's how I look at it anyway.
I wish you could have taken my introductory physics course. You'd get to see it doesn't have to be as hard as professors make it and still get everything you need out of it. I was one of those first type students, more interested in the Newtonian stuff than the fancy black hole, special relativity stuff.

Econophysics dear, Econophysics. Look up that subject. Seeing the following equation helped me realize that Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation was truly universal as in it applies to studies not normally associated with Physics.
This is a formula that I read in a graduate level Economics course book at 3AM in a dorm. It was introduced to me by a Economics Graduate Student .Knowing that I was studying Physics he asked me, 'Does this equation look familiar to you?"

Fₘ is the force of migration,
k is an arbitrary constant,
Wₒ is the prevailing wage in City Sₒ.
Wₚ is the prevailing wage in City Sₚ,
Mₒ is the population of City Sₒ,
Mₚ is the population of City Sₚ,
and.
the quantity (Sₚ - Sₒ) is the distance between the cities Sₒ and Sₚ
The equation describes the fact that the migratory force between two cities is directly proportional to the product of the difference of the prevailing wages in the two cities and the product of the population of the two cities, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance that separates the two cities.
It was an epiphany.
It is basically no different than
F₉ = G m₁m₂/{(r₂ - r₁)]²
which is Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation.

My advice if you're interested in majoring in physics is to take the introductory physics and calc classes and if you do well in them do it, if you don't do well in those you should probably consider another major.

Wow thanks for that video. Im thinking about studing physics but i keep hearing that its hard and that only 10 people out of 120 make it to the end of the degree in my country. Today ive heard ill probably just give up and swich to economy after a while. Your video lifted my spirit up a little tho. Thanks for explaining what it really is. To any potential first year about to delve into physics , heed this gentleman's words , introductory physics can be deceivingly hard , like , getting a 20% in a test for the first time hard , and the math , make sure your math game is on point.

Im on the same boat... gosh I wish high school sometimes provided more opportunities as to experiment with your career interests more.
Engineering is just natural sciences applied to method, in my opinion. Engineers, mathematicians, physicists, they study and work similar topics but slightly different applications, so you can get your bachelor's degree in engineering and then move to fields of research in physics later
I want to get into mechatronics and study robotics and AI. I already have background in programming and basic computer science, so when I get into university I plan to either get into electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or computer science itself

An error when sb starts a degree/major, class is class u can do what u want and research what u curious in, so you dont need only to follow the lectures and your notes about them but u can search deeply 4 u own and find a passion, yep, college/major is a "ticket" but u knowledge is got by u love not by u marks... (you always gonna find time to those things are attracting to u)

What we're your maths and physics grades in high school?
I'm in my first year of college, i have never taken a single physics or calculus class in my life and I'm majoring in a social science(but honestly I don't know what to pursue in my major) but lately I been having an interest in physics and I want to give it try but I fear that i'll just regret it and end up on the same boat i'm already on in my major
I never got accepted into summer research unfortunately, but i did get into research with my professor.

If you're good a math you won't be good at physics, you just need to understand math. It's a different kind of thinking entirely, math is just a way to quantify what you're talking about.

No matter what people say to feel superior, high level chemistry requires a lot of math too, not as much as physic but a lot none the less. I have a friend who is currently doing his Dr in physical chemistry and he took all the math courses you take as a physicist (in bachelor an master) in addition to all the other stuff because the mandatory math courses for chemistry are just not nearly enough.
Love physics because I am so intrigued by how the world works but for some reason I really hate math. Idk unapplied math is just a headache but when we associate it with objects, and trajectories and etc it gets interesting

Instead of studying those basics u mentioned we studied chemistry and simple math +some of newtonien physics in the first two semesters.. After it they made us jump directly into electromagnetic and quantum mechanics....

Crazy that what they have in USA in third year (Electrodynamics and statistical mechanics) we have here in europe in second semester. Also it’s weird that you have special relativity towards the end of electrodynamics, we had it in the begining and basically derived magnetostatics from it (things like Lorentz force, which I’ve seen in Grifiths is just 'given'.)

In a way it is for the first few physics courses. Just a little bit more in depth. Most universities would actually count AP physics credit towards the first semester physics in college.
1:05 A ton of people get into physics to talk about lasers, optics, semiconductors, etc... However, the reasons you listed are why I study physics.
