HOW TO: REAR BRAKES - Peugeot 106, 206, 306

  • In this how to video; a guide to replacing your rear brake pads and discs.
    Once fitted, please remember to test drive with some 30mph emergency stops, with some time in between stops for cooling and then steady braking for 250miles to permit them to bed in.
    correction for the torque spec of the two bolts bolts holding the pad retaining bracket is 110nm, however be cautious with old bolts and threads.
    This is the same as the big bolts on the caliper.
    Specifically for a Peugeot 106, 206, 306, Citroen ZX, Xsara, Saxo. ...
    However these brakes can be found on a number of Citroens and Peugeots.
    This is not a comprehensive guide for all types of brake system or all methods. Just the basics to get you going. Hope it proves helpful.
    There are other methods and you may have other w you prefer. That is fine. Just keep it safe!

    omg this video has saved my day. I was used to how brake calipers of Opels can be squeezed in relatively easy, but with my Peugeot 306sw it's a different ballgame!
    After almost breaking my hands trying to do the same with the Peugeot I found your video.
    10 mins after watching the video the job was done! Thanks very much!!

    I found it easier to fit the spring clips (anti rattle clips) last. You can push the short bar up under the top pad ear and then use a screwdriver to ease the other end into position behind the pad. I don't think there's a right or wrong way, just what works for you.

    Hi, you stated 65Nm as the torque spec for the rear caliper retaining bolts. However, I found multiple sources that contradict each other. My Haynes manual says 50Nm, the Autodoc instruction video says 80Nm, and a source from Peugeot itself (I think) says 110Nm for both the guide pin bolts and the retaining bolts. As these numbers differ quite a lot, I'm a little confused now.

      Undo the pinch bolt on the hub, undo the driveshaft but and ensure its loose in the hub... Put a square drive into the hub slot at the back, turn it 45° to open the hub up and smack down on the hub with a copper hammer.
      Strut will stay in place and the hub will drop down.
      Then undo the 3 top bolts.
      Always best to do shocks and springs in pairs.
      I would also reccomend new strut top mounts and bearings as they will be tired by this age.

Once because a custom oil line I fitted failed. Once because I was too cheap to replace a 10yr old battery and we left the car for a week in winter and it wouldn't start. We do 25k miles a year. Sorry did not explain very well, used your video to fit new discs and pads and that's all fine, but was wondering if you had knowledge of the ABS sensors that bolt through the bottom of the trailing arms, both have the sensor hole uppermost with the retaining bolt below, on the nearside wheel the gap to the reluctor ring is approx 2mm but on the offside wheel its around 20mm. If I was to turn the sensor 180 degrees the gap is approx 2mm but now have nothing to fix to. can send pictures if you like. Regards, Rob

      @@PiggyPower Problem solved (Bodged) All research tells me the the sensors are interchangeable between the two rear wheels, but when you look closely at the sensor head it is offset to one side which in this case means you get the correct gap on the nearside but a much larger gap on the offside. In my mind the offside sensor should have the sensor aperture below the bolt hole rather than above, and to prove this I rotated the sensor 180 degrees and made up a bracket which fits over the sensor head and screws into the original bolt hole, so sensor is secure and ABS fault has vanished. As the sensor bolts into the trailing arm its possible the car had the wrong arm fitted at some stage. (Who knows)

    Handbrakes not working after fitting new cables. Ive adjusted it in car, ive pulled the pads out the caliper and you can push the piston in with your fingers? if im right shouldnt it screw in? So im thinking the spindle inside the caliper that the piston goes on has possibly snapped? If i pull the handbrake arm on the caliper it does nothing, the piston does not move out at all.

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  Před 4 lety

      But it was working fine before you replaced the cables? You touched nothing else?
      Yes, you are right, you need to turn the piston to return it in, also, you shouldn't be able to push the piston in just with your fingers! Takes a lot of pressure

    • @Glenn7719
      @Glenn7719 Před 4 lety

      Cheers for the quick reply. Someone elses car. He snapped one of cables over-adjusting them at the handbrake, im guessing the cause is the calipers, hence why he was sodding about adjusting them. Ive done plenty of brakes and near enough all rears you twist to move in, so to me it says calipers focked. (ive not looked at the other side) He just got me to replace the cables, which i done and then adjusted them at the handbrake, the arms move on the calipers, but nothing.

      May try winding them both back in, if you adjust at the handbrake before pump the calipers out hydraulically, you can mess them up badly. I usually don't touch the cable adjustment untill I've driven the vehicle and bedded those rear brake pads in nicely.

      Remove caliper, clamp in vice, spray freeing oil under the dust boots. Leave to soak for 15min. Return and try again. If not, remove from vice and tap with a copper hammer the sliders out one at a time. Clean them and the boots they run in thoroughly and grease before fitment. 👌🐷💪

      Work perfect. Easy to service. Cheap to repair. Very efficient. 🤔
