    Wow. I was a Junior Leader in 1990 and SGT Warner - PTI used to beast us in the old Burgoyne Gym. Cannot believe as a listed building they have left it to rot.. Shame.

    Thanks for the blast from the past. I did my training there back in 1977. I certainly remember the old gym and running up and down Hospital hill many a times. I had a lot of happy times there.

    Just a point of note, that woman had no authorisation to tell you that you were trespassing. If you are in a public place you may film whatever your eyes can see and, photography is not a crime.

      I was tempted to stand my ground, she came out of a nursery school that's co located within the grounds of the old church. I pointed out that I was a veteran and just wanted to film the church briefly and also pointed out that on the open gates there was no signage. I told her she needs to keep the gates closed.

    Keith; all of those new houses are private homes. There are some Officers married quarters along Pond Hill road as well as the resident Battalion Commanders house next to what was the Garrison Officers Mess which has now been sold and converted to flats.

    • @LetsTab59-bd4fd
      @LetsTab59-bd4fd  Před 10 dny +1

      I get that we are in need of new housing stock but I do wonder where the money went after the MOD sold off the land?

    • @sappersteve1443
      @sappersteve1443 Před 10 dny

      @@LetsTab59-bd4fd The land wasn't sold off cheap, like the MoD normally do. The developers were given the land to build on, and when the houses are sold, the MoD gets a percentage of the market price for each house; so the more house prices rise; the more money the MoD make.
      I expect that the money will likely end up in the hands of the Treasury though?
      Its interesting to note that the POL point and the stores outlet are unsold, and I think that this is probably due to the cost of decontaminating the area around the 3 fuel storage tanks?

    How have they got away with demolishing some of the old Napier barracks ,it was grade 2 listed,my dad was provo cpl in late 70s and I was at IJLB in the 80s, Napier barracks was a transit camp for NI trg and hyth / lydd ranges ,the Battalion church used to have a onl building next to it called Montgomery house ,we used to live behind it , Montgomery and Churchill visited the church back in the Second World War and it had spitfires flying over it whilst they were there ,I know this because the old groundsman back in the 70s told us ,,sad that it’s being sold off

    We had a lad join us from Junior-Leaders. On the way back from the ranges [Ran back-Aldershot Browning Barracks] He passed out. Our officer told us to leave him {Worsley-Tonks] I took his gat, whale took his webbing and Tim helped fireman carry him, we took turns and dropped him off at Cambridge hospital.
    Got a right bollocking as we got back.!!! Turns out he would have probably died due to dehydration and lack of salt in the body.
    He was too lazy to get up for breakfast, that's what you get for it.
    He was transferred to another regiment. Didn't get to "P" company.
