As a Canadian, all these snacks are near and dear to my heart. Especially the Macintosh toffee, which is literally still stuck inside my heart because it cannot be dissolved or digested.
I came to the comments section to ask if any Canadians actually eat these things lol. Aside from hickory sticks, I don't think I've ever had any of the others!
@@melissachihrin2464 oo they are the best things ever
😂😂
I'm 52 and I used to really really like Macintosh toffee but it's hard to find nowadays. I have no idea what Big Turk is. I've lived in several provinces and I never heard of it.
@@Trygvar13 there all over Alberta
Together again for Canadian snacks, Dermot and Justine’s intro to the video; “Ah Caramel.” Absolutely hilarious and brings me back.
They are the most curiosity & funny. Nothing rude about them.
As a Canadian, I was happy to see this as proof that most snacks in Canada are are in fact not maple flavored.
As a very proud Canadian, of Irish ancestry somewhere back there, I found this fun. And they picked a couple of very divisive Canadian snack to start. Big Turk, and Cheezies are things that Canadians either love, or loathe. Mackintosh's are the thing that everyone has all the time. There's a handful in the bottom every every old ladies' purse that no one ever knows how they got there. Then there is Hickory Sticks. Everyone loves Hickory Sticks.
I am drooling over herewatching this, my sad Canadian self living in California hell missing her junk food!
Hickory Sticks are seriously addictive!
I misread hickory sticks as hockey sticks. Which if it was real, i wouldn't have been all that surprised.
They should have been given Coffee Crisp. They were robbed.
Hickory Sticks are great. Especially a sprinkling of them in a hamburger or bbq pulled pork sandwich. I also miss the salt n vinegar ones.
As a french canadian, there's nothing I enjoy more than these guys wild attempts at french!
@@funtimefitness2052 You're really struggling with this? And why are you so concerned with something so trivial?
Not that hard to grasp that people from Québec speak french and therefore would called themselves french-canadian. Its a distinction that's been made countless times and is still used.
I think the French spoken in Quebec might also be considered an attempt at French. I kid. Mutability of language is what makes it useful after all.
@@AlbertaStrength Not all French Canadians are from Quebec. New Brunswick has a huge French population as well
@@satan3959 Indeed! So does Manitoba *waving at you*
The Cheezies and Hickory Sticks go better with a beer, preferably while watching hockey.
Cheers!
I'm Canadian too and growing up, we kids weren't allowed to go near my mom's Hickory Sticks lol I prefer Cheetos Puffs anyway. Weirdly enough, it's good with coffee!!
Good with some good Canadian Whiskey too
Growing up the MackIntosh caramel came in a rectangle bar shape that was about 5cm x 10cm and pulled nearly every filling from your head when eating it. Generally took about an hour or two to eat, so when my mother wanted to shut me up for a while it was a cheap investment for her, none of this convenient individually wrapped stuff. A lot of folks also take the Hickory Sticks and put them on a hamburger / cheeseburger, especially when you Bar-B-Que. Hawkins Cheezies are a truly Canadian classic that is either loved or hated as is true with Big Turk. I love Cheezies and cannot stand Big Turk. Y'all just took me back 40 years to my childhood.
I'm older and remember the commercials that told you to smack in on a hard surface to break up the bar. And I never eat Hickory Sticks by itself . But as a kid, it was a crunchy garnish on hot dogs or a sandwich!!!
yes! about the mack! they still sell it in the bar but it's much softer now.
^^^^this!
I used to put the bar in the freezer, then take it out and whack it on the table so I had small pieces. Lol
I miss the rock hard Macintosh bar. It was like toffee flavoured glass.
Another proud Canadian here drooling because of the hickory sticks 🤤 You should do a part 2 - you missed the Lays Ketchup chips (crisps), All Dressed Chips (crisps), Caramilk bars and the Coffee Crisp!!
Love hickory sticks.
Wait caramilk is Canadian?
Smarties. We have chocolate smarties. But other places call their rockets smarties. Chalk pucks
@@D3hander We have them, although I wouldn't be shocked if they were sold elsewhere (probably with a slightly different formula).
Lays ketchup are shit though, Old Dutch are way better
I am from Canada and Big Turk was one of my dad's favourites - I can't stand it. Hawkins Cheezies are a national treasure and we are PROUD they are not puffy like Cheetos (but they are an acquired taste, lol). McIntosh's used to come in a bar shape that you rapped on the counter or table to break it into shards that would fit in your mouth - the individually wrapped ones I don't find nearly as good. Hickory Stix were my favourites to have after a night at the bar.
Yeah, my mom and sister love Big Turks, I can't stand them myself. Technically, Macintosh is actually from England originally...still made there in fact
The secret to why Grannies carry Mackintosh's is to shut the wee ones up via dental bondage. Like denture cement, but made of 'wholesome ingredients'... Like butter... and sugar! :D
As a Quebecer, I can confirm that Justine's french accent and pronounciatiom is the best out of all of them.
C'est pas vraiment un exploit...
As a Canadian, speaking on behalf of every single Canadian, you should know that Big Turks are only eaten after snowmobiling or splitting wood. Cheezies can be eaten either before or after skating on a pond or piling wood. Macintosh toffees are meant only as a reward from either starting the fire or winning your hockey game or at least winning your fight in a losing game and hickory sticks are to be enjoyed at anytime and are quite often crumbled into other meals or snacks to provide flavour and crunchiness like crackers in soup, croutons in salads or bread crumbs in a meatball.
Cheers.
🤭
YAAAAS! The Big Turk has got to go. I NEVER ever, would have claimed that as a Canadian snack. WHERE was the maple fudge? The maple cookies? THE FREAKING BUTTER TARTS AND NANAIMO BARS?!?!?!?
Not prepackaged. We need a Canadian Baked Goods episode!
@@derrickdouglas4943 that would be amazing. I volunteer as tribute 😆
Nanaimo bars,,,, oooooh yeahh
Today I learned Big Turk is a Canadian candy. Had no idea!
@@Gr8tBlueHeron so is coffee crisp. Nestle has a few Canadian only snacks
I have a story about those bilingual labels. So, of course, I grew up and live in Canada, and back in High School I was able to go on a trip to France and Germany. When we were in France, I noticed myself turning beverage containers, and I realized, I was looking for the English label, but of course, being in France, there was only a French label.
The best way to eat MacKintosh's Toffee is to just let it dissolve in your mouth, or add a piece to your coffee. I never liked Big Turks, mostly because I don't like Nestle chocolate. Hickory Sticks and Cheezies are staples of every birthday party before my teens. Still like both, but I prefer just putting Hickory Sticks on a burger, they're easier to eat that way.
One of my friends growing up actually did lose a filling to a piece from a Mac toffee bar; freaked all of us out for a while, but we didn't stop eating them. That's how good they are.
Awesome job whoever curated this collection. This, 100%, is every Canadian's childhood snack pack! Just had a Big Turk yesterday and now I'm craving Cheezies and Hickory Sticks
I 100% disagree with that statement.
Gotta disagree. Everyone i grew up with hates all of these except hickory sticks.
The trick to eating Hickory Sticks is to crush them in the bag and proceed to pour them into your mouth from the bag!😜
Lena and Ciara make a great duo. Lena's look at the camera after Ciara said she wished they were ridged absolutely killed me.
I am in the minority of Canadians, in that I love Big Turk while fully realizing it's neither good chocolate or good Turkish delight.
Me too!! When I was little my Mom had a bulk food store and had big chunks of Turkish delight! Which is likely the only reason I ever liked Big Turks lol!
Are we minorities? Big Turk Lives Matter? Nvm. Yes, I love Big Turk as well
I like Big Turk too. Just no coconut.
Agreed. I love it also
I am happy to report I had an Ah Caramel at lunch today. 😁🇨🇦
The toffee is perfect for tucking in your mouth to melt while you do something else, not nearly as much work.
And I feckin love Hickory Sticks, they're my favorite salty snack!
Je t'aime, Tryers, je t'aime!
Ah Caramel have got me through the various lockdowns. Vachon has given me the will to go on.
The small Mackintosh toffees are amazing. These would be Halloween top tier as well. Usually though the parents would get the large bar that you had to smack on the table to break up into bits to eat. That was always fun.
Oh yes! Actually frozen, then smashed into a million little bits that melt in your mouth. My childhood is showing. ❤
Justine's face at 6:11, when Dermot speaks French, is priceless!
The flare on those nostrils!!
He was pretty close to nailing the Quebecker accent, though. Sorry, mon amis Quebecois, mais c'est vrai.
@@ChirpyMike C'est incroyable, n'est-ce pas??
Sounded Japanese with heavy guttural tone 😆
Tabernac!
As a Canadian myself, hickory sticks have definitely been my favourite for the last 20 years.
NEVER FORGET CARMEL. 💜😭
That company has a new snack. It's called "AWK!! DURIAN!!

That was my fave video of all ! As a Canadian, I appreciated how emotional you got ! You guys should find a panel in Canada and come this way next time once the world feels better. Really is the best place on the planet.
Canada can, and will, do better Justine! I sent the other Vachon cakes 2 weeks ago, arriving tmrw!
Be sure to tell the Try Channel you want to be in Canada Cakes part 2!
*there are 7 new ones.
❤❤❤❤😊 thank you for making all your videos an air high five to everyone on video and behind-the-scenes air high five across the world❤❤❤❤
One of the greatest things about Hawkins cheesies, are their fire starting abilities. Take them camping and use as a snack and kindling! lol
That cracked me up. Well done.
yup Doritos zesty cheese are like Zippos on crack
@@pitcat1376it's very true. We would always bring the bag of snack packs. We would open one and use for kindling and then eat a bag between us. You can only eat a few at one time as they are so bloody salty. But they absolutely do work as fire starters
They burn blue! End of night bar tested!
Can we just talk about Dermot's t-shirt? Another EPIC choice, Sir!
Repping another Last Exit To Nowhere shirt!
The Hawkins cheesies are made in the city I live in, here they are preferred to any of the puffy cheesies. 😊 they are great with a cold beer!
Hawkins cheezies are the absolute best and the only one I will buy. A few years ago, I heard there was a fire at the factory and immediately went out and bought 3 of those triple packs.... just in case, lol
*everywhere* they are preferable to puffy cheesies
Ahh, another bellvillian
Hawkins Cheezies - proudly made in Bay of Quinte - a longstanding Belleville tradition. Count me in as another Bellevillian, that makes three of us on this feed - we could start a Tri-channel
When I was young, we lived in International Falls Minnesota, on the border with Canada. Whenever we drove to Fort Frances for any reason, my mom would get several Mackintosh bars. These were much to large to fit in your mouth (certainly not individually wrapped bite size pieces), and trying to bite off a piece was dangerous (you could lose a filling or maybe a tooth), but they sure tasted good...
For those you had to chill them a little then break pieces off. Then when you put the piece in your mouth it went all chewey again.
We always used to chill them and then smack them against the wall to break them into smaller pieces.
The recipe of the Mackintosh bars must have changed sometime in the 90's. I remember as a kid in the 80's, just smaking the whole thing against the concrete floor of the basement to break it into pieces. Later on you actually had to chill it in the freezer before you couls do that. Hickory Sticks however are still my favourite. I eat 'em one by one, and the only snack that I share with no one. :)
They should do one with a whole range of coffee crisps
I’ve been binging your past shows today waiting on the ice/snow storm heading my way. I loved your Orlando videos!
Yup! At least it’s not the 50 cm we got 2 weeks ago 🇨🇦🇨🇦
McIntosh toffee is my most requested "bring some back with you" when traveling from the US to Canada. Well, that and every Dare brand cookie, especially the Maple Cremes!
When Justine and Dermot are together you know this is going to be special!! Love this channel!!!
Oh I want some of those Cheezies now, those are the best cheese-flavoured snack period
Good to see Dermot and Justine enjoying a substantial meal 🙂
Also, always love when you guys pair Dermot and Justine. They always make me laugh my ass off!
My favorite pairing! Next would be LJG and Irish Jesus, and then Brian and Martin.
Hickory Sticks Are To Be Smushed Into Sandwiches That’s What We Use Them For!! 🇨🇦

Great job Trying those Canadian Snacks . Justine looking lovely and very happy as always.
No durian!
Awww!!! So happy to see Dermot and Justine together again but without the Great Wall of China between them 🤣 Makes me so happy ❤ Best duo ever!!!
All the pairings in the cast for this video were amazing! Hilarious!
"It was a hornier experience than I thought it would be" 😂
Prying the caramel from the roof of the mouth with an index finger is the correct technique for eating McIntosh Toffee. I’ve never met anyone badass enough to finish a box.
Video was too short. It seems like they were all just getting revved up and it was over. But putting two of my favorite Tryers together, Lena and Ciara, made it worthwhile.
Ha! Brilliant! Just brilliant! We are slowly but surely adding to the Canadian play list of Try videos!
*all of these were going to be the third shipment I sent to Try, so big salute to the person(s) who sent these in!! You’re a legend!!!
**the rest of the Vachon cakes and real maple syrup should arrive over there tomorrow!
🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦
Ciara hit it on the head with the Mackintosh's! I haven't had one since grandma passed away. Also, all these snacks are very near and dear to my Canadian heart. I do wonder if the Big Turks were old, though, they should be pretty soft.
Try some things from Newfoundland!! Tea cakes, pineapple crush, 'Newfoundland Chocolate Company' chocolate and Salt Water Taffy!
If you send them, they will try.
Good to see some mainstream Canadian snacks... usually its the weird stuff from the food/snack aisle London Drugs or Shoppers that makes it on here.
Big Turk: I don't like it... to me its like eating licorice and chocolate at the same time
Cheezies: one of my favorite snacks. I like the strong cheese flavor
Mackintosh's Toffee: I let them melt in my mouth and don't really chew them. Thats why I prefer the bar: you can put it in the fridge and then slap it on the counter when its hard and it breaks up in to small chunks
Hickory Sticks: I like them, like the flavor... but sometimes they can come across as too salty
Now THAT is exactly how you eat a bar of taffy
My Geordie mate was laughing at me when we first met. He said that he could imagine my dad being a lumberjack. So stereotypical. Then I told him my dad sold industrial logging equipment.
Excellent lineup of Try-ers today!
The fact that the Coffee Crisp bar was not in this video hurts my heart. A Canadian classic to be sure.
You have to take the Hickory Sticks and pour them into a bowl with tomato soup... ever since my friend made me try them that way I've been hooked!
Dermot and Justine together is AWESOME! Dream team right there for sure!
Also, if Justine was to be forced to leave due to liking the corn snacks, we've got tons of those over here in the U.S.
Come to TN ... I'll make sure you have all the corn crunchies you want ... and very good choice in ham. Bravo!
Also Ciara and Lena together was just too much. Thought my monitor was going to melt from all the hotness at any minute!
Just Wow! Is having them together like that even legal?
Asking for a friend . . .
I’d like to hear Dermot do a whole shoot in French, I like his accent…
The common thread is all of them require some work to eat....you do know how cold it can get here...so our snacks also help us work up a sweat to stay warm :)
YES!!! These are real classic Canadian snacks. Best Canada video yet.
Aw gosh Lena's new hairstyle is 🤩
The big flat McIntosh's toffee is definitely the way to go. I remember having some in the summer, and you could pull on that stuff for ages and it would just keep drawing out into thinner and thinner threads. When someone told me the trick about smacking it on the table, I was dubious, but even on a pre-stretched bar of toffee, there it was! Smithereens!
The toffee used to remelt into a solid chunk during summer before you knew it.
We always put it in the freezer for a few minutes then gave it a smack to break it into chunks. Was hard on the fillings of your teeth though. Added bonus, you could make a whistle out of the box it came in.
@@terrychatfield6564 But the amazing thing is that it will smash even if it is a malleable mess! But if you prefer it cold, that works.
Breaking into pieces, softening them in the mouth, and then having crab apples or Macintosh apple slices was a dream (along with pulling warm maple syrup after being on the snow from the ground)
I'm Canadian and all I can say is you guys rock. I love your shows. Keep them going.
These were some excellent pairings ! Great chemistry between the Tryers. Well done. 👏
So glad Justine is enjoying herself instead of being haunted by durian😆
Ciara and Lena are amazing. Is this the first time they work together? Next time, put them in a drinking video.

My son has a friend in Canada who mailed him tons of Canadian goodies!
Was just back in Canada for family issues. Had a 3 day wintery drive back home to PNW. Popcorn Twists, Hickory Sticks, Eat-mores, Oh Henry! were my companions. We typically stock up on all our childhood Canadian goodies when we go back home.
YES! Thank god hickory sticks are the Tetris of chips, otherwise I'd be gobbling them up all the time, ALL the time. Like gathering up a bunch of broken toothpicks and trying to mash them into my mouth... not gonna happen.
Pro Canadian trick for eating mc toffee is to microwave them for a few seconds before eating. You are Welcome Ireland
Cheezies are supposed to be crunchy Ciara. They are my absolute favourite. Now that I'm living in the states for the past 14 years, my family in Canada have to mail them to me.
1:43 I immediately locked eyes with Daymon! As if I was there 🤣
Can't wait to go to Canada again to get me some Coffee Crisp and Makintosh toffees.
Once again, Dermot + Justine = hilarious 😆
Especially hickory sticks… love ❤️ them!
Ok can we talk about Dermot's t-shirt? If there is a best dressed category, he'd be in the running.
Another Last Exit To Nowhere shirt!
You guys tried three of my favorite snacks, Big Turk, Hawkins Cheezies and Hickory Sticks. Love them all so much :)
Top notch shirt, Dermot. I also like your Ghostbusters line of shirts.
Safe to say, the editing on these videos is top notch. Love the work put into that!!!
Iam 66 and Canadian 😊 in the 60's the Macintosh toffee bar was very popular the bar form would last you through a whole movie at the theaters. 25 cents would get you a Saturday matinee and popcorn, pop,and a Macintosh toffee bar. Great childhood memories 😊
Awesome pairings in this video, especially Ciara and Lena. All of them were clearly enjoying each other's energy, which is contagious. Made my day.
My two favorites
Given the remarks made by the Try team, it sounds like the snack package had a chance to go stale in transit. Several of those have light-duty packaging and are really underwhelming if you get a past date package. Hawkins’ Cheezies are heavier on the corn flavour than the comparable Cheetos product (makes them better with a beer but more bland solo). Macintosh toffee is premium filling extractor (you can chew it for ages, especially if it isn’t stale). Hickory Sticks should not taste stale at all but they can get a little overwhelming in flavour if you binge on them. Big Turk is like the Filet-O-Fish of Canadian candy aisles. It’s always on the menu but you never see anyone actually get one. Turkish delight is not particularly popular in Canada (although yeah, Big Turk is a mediocre but large portioned form).
After watching the video I just had to go to the store to pick up some Cheezies (my favourite “chip” since I was young), Hickory Sticks (it’s been years since I last had them, but sooo good) and a Big Turk (I like Turkish delight, so this is a nice occasional snack). I didn’t get Mackintosh’s because I want to keep my dental work in my mouth. Good on the Try Channel for sampling some Canadian classics!
I enjoy these videos, i think it would be fun to see a canadian thats lived in Ireland for a number of years and trying these snacks again and see what they say
"Ah caramel" nice throwback to my favourite Irish Try video of all time. I'm sending boxes of those at some point in the future,I wanna see a version 2 of that canadian cake video lol.

I think poor Justine has had enough Durian now. That look of hers scares me.
LOL 😂
A Canadian snacks video + Ciara and Lena...on behalf of Canada I say "Thank you!". With that said I absolutely love Big Turks, Hawkins Cheezies and Hickory Sticks.
As every kid who grew up in the 80s and 90s in Canada should know: The log driver's waltz pleases girls completely. lol

Oh my gosh, you guys got some basic snacks. However, Macintosh toffee is awesome! It use to come as a slab and you’d smack it on a table to break into pieces. Yes you can lose a tooth! Hickory sticks are so good! Big Turk…nope. Ugh! 🇨🇦
I used to work at a store that got a lot of vacationing Americans that loved Big Turks. We sold them by the box to the Americans when they went back home.
Smacking it on the table was cheating! You're supposed to let it practically rip your teeth outta your head
Can someone please feed Dermot a peanut butter and pig lip sandwich?
The macintosh candies are a staple in some baking recipes that are a personal favourite.
If it makes Justine feel better, my mom came from an Irish family in Iowa. We grew up on corn and potatoes.
Big turk is amazing imo (Ive tried the British Turkish delight and those were gross), the cheezies I don't like, I prefer humpty Dumpty, the mackintosh is best in the big rectangle bars, and hickory stix are AMAZING.
The big mackintosh bar... you put it in the fridge and then when you want some you slap it on the counter and break it in to little crystaline shards of caramel :) :) :)
Big Turk are ok but my English mate found them to be amazing.
Oh haha, I like the British one and the real Turkish delight + the Canadian version, I like them all lmao
They really need to do a Tim Hortons episode 👍🏽🇨🇦👍🏽
A fellow Canadian here..I don't think I have ever seen a Big Turk..You must have got a bad batch of Cheezie's because they are heaven sent !!.
Yeah, I'm suspicious of someone saying Cheezies have a "weak flavour". It's a bang of cheese in your mouth.
Excuse me while I pause the video but who said Lena's hair could be so feckin adorable?!?!
They gave them the bottom level of Canadian snacks. No Coffee Crisp anywhere, no all dressed or ketchup chips, no Smarties.
