  • This video is an introduction to age discrimination at work. It introduces us to the benefits of an age- diverse workplace and the assumptions made about older and younger employees.
    Video transcript sample:
Dave Peel and Mick Rowsell are working quietly away in an office. Dave is 60, and Mick is about the same age.
    THE NARRATOR SAYS:
Emails to check. Paperwork to complete. It's just a normal start to the day for 60-year-old Dave Peel. For Mick Rowsell, it's a similar story. This could be the scene in your workplace. Nothing too strenuous. You'd expect.........
An alarm sounds and Dave and Mick immediately spring into action, pulling on overalls and helmets to a soundtrack of urgent music. A helicopter is shown on a helipad, its blades turning quickly. Mick and Dave run outside and into the helicopter.
    THE NARRATOR SAYS:
Dave and Mick are winchmen for the Coastguard Search & Rescue Helicopter Unit at Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire, the busiest in the UK. When they set out for work, they never know how the day's going to turn out.
The helicopter takes off and flies out over the sea.
    MICK SAYS:
I've been air crew 34 years. I started off in the Royal Navy.
    DAVE SAYS:
We actually get called out approximately 240 times a year.
    THE NARRATOR SAYS:
For this kind of work, you need to be alert and quick-thinking, with bags of stamina.
Dave is secured in a harness and lowered down towards a speedboat, with the sound of the helicopter radio in the background.
    DAVE SAYS:
There's a fair physical requirement to the job. Obviously we could be picking people out of the water in a Force Nine sea, for instance, or picking people out of life rafts that are moving around all over the place.
    MICK SAYS:
Sometimes you have to make decisions that make you think hard. You must think hard about what you're doing and you draw on your experience and skills.
Dave comes within reaching distance of the people in the speedboat and they help him down on to the boat. Dave secures one of the men in the boat in to a harness before the helicopter winching equipment starts to winch both him and the man up.
    THE NARRATOR SAYS:
Nobody would describe Dave and Mick as over the hill, or past their sell-by date - far from it. In fact, Bristow Helicopters, who operate the search and rescue helicopters for the coastguard, have also recognised that, when lives are at stake, there is no substitute for experience. Today is a training exercise with the RNLI, to keep everyone up to speed with the latest procedures, so when they are called to a real emergency, they work together as a team.
    MICK SAYS:
You go out there, you do a good job, you've brought someone back safely, they recover, and you feel great. You think you've contributed something to the world.
Dave and the rescued man are now level with the helicopter and Mick pulls them in.

Some people fear and hate those who are different from them. This fear and hate can stem from a lack of understanding or exposure to different cultures, beliefs, or lifestyles. It is important to educate oneself and promote acceptance and tolerance towards all individuals.
