What are Muda, Mura, Muri? And, what are the 7 Wastes of Lean?

- In Japan, waste is generally known as ‘muda‘, meaning wasted effort. In fact, there are other forms of waste: ‘mura‘ and ‘muri‘.
• Muda: Wasted effort
• Mura: Inconsistency
• Muri: Unreasonable requirements
And, what are the 7 Wastes of Lean?
Taichi Ohno revolutionized productivity at Toyota, to produce the Toyota Production System (TPS) - the forerunner of Lean Production.
The starting point for Ohno’s reforms was the idea of waste, or ‘Muda’.
Ohno wanted to eliminate all possible forms of waste. So, he identified the seven categories that are often known as the ‘Seven Wastes’.
1. Defective Production
2. Overproduction
3. Waiting
4. Transporting
5. Inventory
6. Motion
7. Excessive Processing
Some people add other wastes to Ohno’s original seven, most commonly placing Non-used employee talent (wasting skills) between number 3 and 4 in my ordering, so create the mnemonic acronym: DOWNTIME.
Ohno also developed a system of signboards that track the progress of goods through the manufacturing process, which are called ‘Kanbans’. The kanban board is now widely used in managing software projects under agile project management methodologies.
So, what of Mura and Muri
Less is said about these in the Production environment. But I believe they are both vital to us, in the Project environment.
Mura: Inconsistency
We need to be adaptable and not stick slavishly to fixed methods. But it is also important to create consistency where we can, to produce a controlled project environment. Key elements of this are:
• Governance
• Control
• Efficiency
Muri: Unreasonable requirements
What Project Manager will fail to recognize unreasonable requirements as a source of waste. Wasted:
• Emotional energy
• Work
• Time
• Cost

Should have been more roll off of the compressor in the audio, it makes it sound clipped, like the spaces in between the audio were selectively silenced. A quiet background track could help this. Great delivery and content btw!!

Why would anyone waste lean? I'll drink it if you don't want it.

There are 8 wastes of LEAN
Yes, I believe an additional waste has been added, around unused creativity, or wasted potential. I am not completely convinced by this. Potential is limitless and also, this feels qualitatively different to me. I chose to stick with the original seven wastes but perhaps should have name-checked number 8.
@@Onlinepmcourses Thanks for your reply. However, today's world is different. We live in a Knowledge-driven economy, unlike a few decades back, from IT services to IOT and A.I/M.L being used in Manufacturing and Logistics. Unutilized knowledge/Skill/ Equipment is True and Derivable by calculation and Value Stream Mapping.
BTW, I am Certified in LEAN, and I have had some major world-leading clients from the US & Europe who today recognize, and understand the importance and impact of the 8th waste. Because they don't want it to start reflecting in their PL as Revenue Leakage.
It is okay to stick with 7 if you like, but a mention of the 8th is also important. After all, it is an accepted Waste by some major industries.
