  • From The Episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before"
    From IMDB - When the Enterprise attempts to penetrate a space barrier, it is damaged and creates a potentially worse problem. Two crew members, including Kirk's best friend, gain psionic powers that are growing at exponentially. This leaves Captain Kirk with the difficult choice; either marooning them or killing before they get so powerful they lose their humanity and become truly dangerous.

    I loved the way he waved his hand and the force field just buzzed out of existence. I never forgot this scene- not even after over 50 years. Gene really got something started here. And Gary became also a legend both here and in the unforgettable 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

      When Elizabeth got struck on the bridge, her powers were held back, Gary on the other hand came to life fully charged.
      Once on Delta Vega Gary activated her full power by waving his hand across her face. I will always like this pilot episode because it's atmosphere is quite spooky I'm many ways. At the end Kirk loses a long time friend, and accepts Mr.Spock as a new one. The beginning of the kirk/ Spock relationship. This episode was aired during Star Treks first season because the episode that was supposed to be shown that week was a bit late in production. People watching that week were quite confused as why Kirk and crew were dressed a bit differently, and why Spock looked different as.well.
      After all , this was supposed to be a pilot episode for network to see only.

      @johnbockelie3899 , I don't agree that her powers were held back, and Mitchell activated them in this sequence. Simply, her esper capability wasn't as innately strong as his, so the transformation took longer. Also, in their confrontation, at the end, her powers weren't as developed and extensive as his, affirming that Mitchell didn't have the ability to boost her up to his level, at will, as you seem to suggest.

    It's interesting that Mitchell's graying sideburns, as he evolved, doesn't seem to get mentioned by folks very often. I think I've read it was done to show how the character's psychic development was accompanied by an enhanced aging process. However, I don't recall if such remarks came from someone involved on the pilot's production side.

      One of the Star Trek novels has a story that the energy barrier is created by the Q - to keep out an evil entity they fought, defeated and exiled from the Galaxy millions of years previously. The barrier is formed of Q energy and any being with pre-existing psychic powers of a certain level absorbs that energy and thus beomes increasingly Q-like.

    Kirk made a potentially fatal mistake. He gave orders for the Enterprise to wait 12 hours before bombarding the planet with radiation. But in 12 hours, Mitchell’s powers might’ve reached the point where he could destroy the Enterprise. 12 hours was too generous.

    • @richardgregory3684
      @richardgregory3684 Před 9 měsíci +1

      It was already too late. Mitchell was already so powerful he could withstand a point blank blast from a phaser rifle and not even feel it.

    • @mitchellmelkin4078
      @mitchellmelkin4078 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @BigNoseDoggie, Hardly his only one. Kirk's decisions throughout the episode marked him as the rookie captain he was. The biggest mistake was not waiting to get the full measure of information the Valiant's recorder buoy had to offer, before recklessly taking the ship into the barrier. HE was responsible for the crew who died, including Dehner and his best friend, for which he never was shown to even give much thought to afterwards, let alone having any negative consequence to face over the debacle, one which could have easily been prevented.
      It isn't unlikely ST wouldn't have become the cultural phonemenon it did if Hunter didn't drop out of this, the second pilot, but based on his performance in The Cage, I've always felt his Pike would have given the show a leading protagonist with more gravitas and a better grounding as a commander.
