  • Want to know more about the traditions of Bonfire? Or, if you were around in Lewes in 1974, maybe you would like to indulge in a little nostalgia? Either way, this film from 40 years ago makes fascinating viewing! How many of the faces do you recognise? Thanks to Philip Amey and to Roger Stamp.

I remember the Cliffe effigy from 76 or possibly 77 was Idi Armin in a big cage eating a banana. Can’t find a picture on the internet anywhere but that’s expected of the restrictions on comedy these days. I was only 7 or 8 and we used to walk all the way from Juggs road to the chalk quarry on the Ringmer road to see the mayhem. One year I clearly remember the pope falling forwards after it was lit and all the fireworks shooting into the crowd. Still go today and probably one of the last of my kind looking at the muppets in the crowds today.
