is the 500 better suited for the road at highway speeds? my DRZ400 screams at 70 75mph..then gearing it at 15/38 I cant do much technical riding, but can do open simple dirt roads all day
My heart says the 500 but my brain knows the 350 would be the best all around choice.
350, you won't be disappointed. just had one and only reason I got rid of it was to get a 450sx-f for the track
I did go for the 2019 KTM 500 EXC F after trying a 2017 2 stroke 300 EXC TPI and found it lacking in power compared to my old Yamaha WR450. It feels just as light as the 300 until you try to make a turn, then you feel the rotating mass but I kind of like that and it suits my kind of riding (few sharp turns at gravel roads).
I did test drive a 2017 KTM 300 EXC TPI and I found it lacking in power compared to my old Yamaha WR450f so I ended up baying a new European (Norway) 2019 KTM 500 EXC F because I am aparently a power junky :) I am now breaking it in and I find that I actually like having a bike with more rotating mass because if feels more stable and that actually suits my kind of riding :) But something is wrong with it running so lean that top speed is 95Km/h. It is was programmed for full effect and all restrictions removed (If I remove side cover for air filter to give it more air it runs worse and has all classical symptoms of running horribly lean).

KTM states each larger bike only gains 2 lbs. Did you weight them?
350 vs 500 does the gyroscopic forces come into play? Or just the power.
I just bought a 2019 KTM 500 EXC F after testing a 2 stroke 2017 KTM 300 EXC and found it lacking in power compared to my old WR450f. The 500 feels just as light as the 300 right until you try to make a turn at speed, then you get a surprise when it just wants to go straight ahead because of the gyroscopic force lol :) I did not test the 300 much but the little I tested I did not feel any gyro effect. But the gyro effect of the 500 I kind of like as it feels more stable and suits my kind of riding with few turns on gravel roads. I can very well understand why many want a bike with smaller engine that you do not need to wrestle to make a turn, my advice is you must test it yourself :) If I had not tested it myself I would have bought a 300 2 stroke and found it lacking in power...

Marek - You can always buy aftermarket kicker if you're worried about it. I've had my battery crash a few times on my bike and jump starting it has never been a problem, even by myself.

The price range is far too close too make people want the 250 for less than 1k more you get double he engine size
Try racing a 2 hour Hare Scramble on each and you see why some people want the 250. None of the top scramble or hard enduro guys ride 450s or 500s.
1. 250 Your first bike.
2. 350 What old men ride who can't hang on to anything bigger.
3. 450 What you bought because you were too pussy to buy the 500
4. 500 the bike you buy when you are a confident rider, containing the pinnacle of 4 stroke engineering as it was intended to be ridden.

It's actually more expensive to buy some Japanese Honda, Kawi or Yamaha and upgrade to the same level as stock KTMs..
Wait until you have to buy a rad cowl or a headlamp for something like a wr250f it would make your eyes water trust me I have one that's why I'm selling it and buying a ktm
I had a Yamaha TT-R 250 way back around 2000. I had to replace the rear wheel bearings and they were $27 each......there were 3 of them in the hub. KTM parts are WAY cheaper
They need to have a dealer day at every motocross/enduro track ,i would even pay a small fee for 15mins to ride a ktm,to see if i would by a ktm or stick to the awesome Japanese bikes.
