For anyone who didn't know: Texel is an island North of the coast of Netherlands :) The biggest of the Dutch 'Orkneys' so to speak lolz. Yes, we grow sheep there. Such a fun video this, thank you Sheep Man.
That first auctioneer could have been Victor Meldrew's brother. Is he as crabbit, do we have these sheep kicking about kilmarnock area? I've never noticed any looking like that in the fields around where I live
I raise Leister Longwool sheep. There are just 3000 pure breed sheep and fewer than 1000 breeding stock. But as beautiful as they are they have not captured the imagination of big breeders yet. We are lucky to get $5,000 at auction for a 4-5 star ram but the breed is growing and more of us are paying attention to the breeding and show points. Next year I’m finally going for my biggest purchase..a ram bred directly from the old stock. They are much larger and broad in the back. The wool brings over $22 per lb because of its perfect locks.

Also know these rams aren’t naturally covered in yellowish wool; it is traditional to enhance the color so that you can better see the sheep’s body shape and especially their back end muscling. Texel rams crossed with many traditional breeds produce lambs with faster growth and more heavy muscling than many other crosses. In general, if you have a really spectacular Texel ram in your flock, his cross or “market lamb” offspring could make good money for your farm.
@@patpierce4854 Thanks for the info! I was wondering why these rams had this weird orange dye over them - the Texels around us here in the Netherlands are a natural dirty white. So, this dye is like the fake tan for a bodybuilding show... LOL!

Lovely sheep. We have stud texel ewes here in New Zealand, and these boys seem very extreme in type compared to what we get here - they look more like beltex!
When prices this high it makes you wonder how it works especially from outside the game. Lizzy your due date is clearly not too far off. Seen a few videos of Camnys midwifery techniques. Hope l goes well. 🤞🤞👍

top KHSI sale ram this year was under $4000, for comparison's sake. sadly he was my pick to bid on but I don't have $3700 to throw toward a ram that was in Missouri lol

I just watched a video you recommended about Doug Pemberton farm and a raging bull. Early on in my cattle raising career, a friend brought us a holstein steer with horns, to fatten up for slaughter. All our other cows were herfords, with no horns. This steer figured out that he could push the others around, and get his choice of the feed, till one day he decided to use those horns on me. As the saying goes, ya don't bite the hand that feeds ya! He very shortly became prime beef. We were very careful to.not have horned stock after that. We bread Hereford/Red Poled the Hereford for the heavy beef and the Reds because they are a beef dairy cross, and so the cows put out more milk and we got 15 to 20 percent heavier calves at weening time.
Recent subscriber & good to see you again on my home turf. What cracking rams! Never been to a market day auction, so would love to see more videos like this. Can anyone go to these sales? Would like to go just to experience it as I'm obviously not a farmer.

Yes they would have been the best of the best in there breed type. Ewes probably wouldn't for for as much but still do make some good money. Glad you're enjoying the channel 👍

Record ram price in Australia was in my home state and sold for $450000 way back in 1988 which is about £238000 for a merino and came from a stud not far from me. That’s crazy money for back then

Nice...the buyers there are as nuts for those high end rams as the Angus bull buyers are in the states...chasing that AI gold....thanks for the video... Do they have these auctions on live video with internet bidding like they do in the states? I don't know the sheep internet auctions, but he beef are dv auctions, superior productions and cattle use...those are the 3 that I'm aware of...I'm sure there are more. Here I was thinking horses where overpriced, but the price/kg on a ram like that is just astronomical compared to horses. But as always the price on a good bloodline is hard to put the right value on anyway.
As a knitter their pelts are beautiful. The wool is what makes a garment. Also you need amazing wool for rugs and other textiles. For some it may be their meat but I'm not a fan.

Probably marry into a family of breeders. Or be prepared to spend a literal fortune on a farm and the required equipment. Not to mention the animals and all of the costs associated with them.

Seems quite a few have just wanted to see a bit more shearing so I have left a bit more unedited shearing clips in the latest vlogs.

They are Texel, cost a lot because they are good breeders and the folk all want the same ones, I think its stupid but each to his own lol.

Funny thing is, I grew up in Holland and saw many texel sheep around us. They didn't look anything like what these have developed in!
Think a lot of the breeds go in phases with what's in fashion and have changed a lot over the years.

Rams can make more money as they can make dozens of babies a year when ewes can only do 2 a year. You get more return for your investment with rams.
I imagine the pedigree matters as well

Those sheep are wild! I had no idea there were sheep colored gold and white, and looked like English Bulldogs...
