    There are many reasons that Gehl is no longer in the Agriculture business. Spent many hours on D17, JD 4020, JD 830. Keep chains lubed on that baler. Considering carrying a laser thermometer gun. Bad bearings is what burn the balers to the ground. Lots of people around here also carry a water fire extinguisher.
    Addition: proper belt length is important. Same stretch Sometimes they say it needs a minimum splice length. And same stretch in splice replacement pieces.

    I believe that I read an interesting thing about alfalfa in that the plants naturally thin themselves out as they in some way "poison" the land to other alfalfa plants. So the alfalfa plants gradually thin themselves out and about every three years an alfalfa field needs to be planted into something else for a year before it can be planted in alfalfa again.
    I grew up on a small farm and we raised sheep. We would pasture them during the summer on different small grass areas like around areas where equipment got parked. They kept the grass nicely trimmed and made it easy to get at the equipment.
    We planted hay fields that were primarily red clover combined with a couple of grasses. The hay fields were never in the same place for very many years just due to standard crop rotation. There would be corn and soybeans plus oats for feed and bedding straw (we also used corn cobs as part of bedding) and the hay field. The oats field would change every year along with the corn and soybeans but the hay field only moved once every 3 or 4 years.
    Baling red clover hay is interesting as you couldn't handle it to much, like you can grass hay, or you would loose the leaves and you can't let it get to dry before you baled it or you would again loose the leaves but you couldn't bale it too wet or you'd burn the barn down. Baling it always seemed to be such a gamble as we didn't have the assistance of things like moisture meters and such things. The cut fields would have to be closely monitored and when it was ready it seemed like it needed to be baled right NOW. That is a bit of an exaggeration, but still, it was always critical.

    You will definitely be able to make hay faster and with less labor. Really a plus to be using twine rather than wire as well. In the past you have sold hay. Round bales cannot be handled by hand has nicely as square bales so the "hobby farm customers" may not be equipped to handle the round bales. So are you considering to still make a few square bales? Square bales do give you those nice slices for easy feeding. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Hoping for the best for you.

  • @DanKlein_1
    @DanKlein_1 Před 2 lety

    your error code was because you closed your belts into the bale door at about 9:45. our JD and before that, I think our Heston did the same thing at times after dumping a bale. We have found that if you turn the PTO on while the door is still open, it will help the tensioner work correctly and pull your belts tight before the door fully closes. your belts kept the door from closing because you pinched them in the door, then that kept the belts from turning. we were lifelong square balers before buying a round baler and went through this exact same learning process. :-)

    I put stair tread tape on the packing rollers, some people put welds to add grip, you won't need it other than making baleage or long dry crops. Make sure the roll scraper on the starter finger mechanism is tight. Good electric connections and lubrication help the twine tie system work. If it runs well you probably won't know anybody making a nicer more dense bale than you.

    Oh and I took the power cord and ran it to the battery and back at the back of the baler, I took an extension cord male plug and put it on the Balers wires. And put a female plug and mounted it on the rear of the tractor. Wheh I hook up the baler I just plug the baler into the tractor. It works better than any other ways I’ve tried over the years.

      I believe that chicory is blue and the plants have taller stems with flowers that are almost daisy like. I agree with the rest that the weeds are purple deadnettle, which like creeping charlie is a plant in the mint family (crush the leaves and it should have a the smell of mint). It is very similar to henbit and creeping charlie also known as ground ivy. One extension site said that the three often grow together. We have a lot of creeping charlie in our area and my husband has gone crazy trying to eradicate it. Which is sometimes funny and at other times irritating as he when he kills areas of it off leaving a lawn that looks like a checkerboard.

    @jimgardner9044 Před 2 lety

    The baler looks good, my advice is after you finish the hay do not power wash it. Just pick all the hay off it and blow over it with a dust gun. Water gets into bearings and causes failure. I think you may have to weave from side to side with the tractor to make a uniform bale. If you rev the tractor whilst the string is running you put more on and I think for the amount you need to do will be better for you. jim in NZ.

    Sickle bar or disc bine, square or round you still need a rake. If there isn't one already, mount a good fire extinguisher on the front of the baler where it can easily be reached if a fire starts in the feed area.

  • @oby-1607
    @oby-1607 Před 2 lety

    Nice. Maybe get a battery operated grease gun like a Milwaukee 18 volt. It has the pressures that will power thru stubborn grease fittings. With round balers, pay particular attention to the condition of the bearings, especially for the belt support rollers. Many round baler fires are from the bearings drying out and then getting red hot igniting the baler and then you will have real problems. Good luck.

    It maybe a good idea to fuse the bailer power line. I had trailer package installed on my truck and it shorted and melted the wires. I think it was a breaker they installed the second time. Things happen and it all worked out. Just thought it might be helpful along with a good fire plan. The good thing is you can check your bearings with the laser temp prob. It looks like a very nice machine. You can tell when they are used hard. It was a great find. Our local equipment dealer seems to be stocked on used equipment. Now it quite a lap around the building to see it all. Seems like a lot of nice stuff is showing up on the market.

    Awesome, Square versus round, it all depends on your operation, our hay storage is a large hay loft so round bales won't work for us, we do over 1000 square bales a year , but putting up in the loft is really the only manual labor we have, plus our cattle feeders are in a cattle shed, so feeding with round bales also would require more work or redesign of the cattle shed. It's all about what works for your operation, plus we also sell hay, small square actually sell easier for us.

    Country view acres. Read this comment I own this exact baler. It’s a brute. I’ve told many people that these balers will swallow a Volkswagen if need be. Lol they’re a fine machine. Keep many shear pins on hand. The shear pins are on the pto shaft at the rear towards the baler. There wiol be a few slots that hokd extras. The belts don’t like to turn until you start to load the chamber. When you get ti the end of your bale, you have to remain in the windrow and pulling in hay while you start your twine arm acriss to start the twine. It HAS to have hay entering the Chamber to start the twine. This can be kinda odd at first if your like me abs used to the machine grabbing the twine on its own. Good luck. These are fine machines. They’re not rated to bale silage but when you look at the rollers. They’re a lot heavier than your typical fry hay baler. They’re actually heavier made than most silage specials.

      Abs thr belts will move someyimes without hey in the chamber but not always. So don’t be alarmed if they aren’t turning when your baling. Someyimes when you drop a bale. The belts will lay limp. Start into the wind row snd it’ll start turning just fine.

Also there a lot of grease fittings, on the tailgate one of the rollers has grease fittings one at each end you have to raise the tailgate open about 1/3 of the way to get to them they are on the inside look for a hole about as big around dime usually you have to clean them out around the fittings with a screw driver or something in order to grease it. They are very good balers I should have kept mine at least for a backup.

On any steep hills after you build bale shut pto off before you open tailgate and close it slowly or belts will jump all over the place. I would recommend you take brain box off baler and send to ag express in iowa for updates. The circuit board and relays were known to fail. Happened to most of them we sold.

      @William Rogard It's been up and down all Spring. From the 40's to the 90 one day. This week it is to be mid 80's all week. Not bad because the humidity is low.

    Look at you all fancy! Good looking baler. Now you're going to need a bale spike to haul those bales in from the field. More fun to come!

    I like the new baler 👍. I had a Hesston and then got a chance to get a Vermeer and ended up selling the Hesston. I wish I would have kept the Hesston and sold the Vermeer.

    That’s a solid baler. I had a friend with a single man operation, he round baled to get it off the field then as needed he would break them down and pitchfork it into a square baler next to the barn so it was easy to manage by himself. He only square baled what he could sell to to small operations that needed 10-20 bales at a time. That first field looks like you could take a crop anytime. Good luck and have fun.

    I like to go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap jumper cable to use when I need to run an extension wire on equipment. The wire has a thick insulation on the wire and it is pliable to work with. I get the 10 ga cable which is 12' long. Crimp on terminal ends work good for connections. Harbor Freight is the cheapest place I can find. Works for me. Have a good day.
