- Dr. Barton A. Myers of Washington & Lee University, spoke at this Tredegar Society event about the instances and effects of guerrilla warfare during the Civil War. Myers highlighted the "sanctioned" raiders like John H. Morgan and John S. Mosby as well as the notorious "Bloody" Bill Anderson.
Without a doubt one of the best lectures I’ve heard regarding a subject that is often overlooked. We’ll done!

The subject of this lecture, at first glance, is about the American civil war. What it's really about is what happens when war breaks down civil order.

Most of my ancestors that lived in “The Free State of Winston” county in Alabama crossed the Tennessee River in mid-1862 to join the Union army. They were mustered into the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV and several of them actually lived long enough to ride with General Sherman through Georgia and the Carolinas. They paid the price however after the US government allowed ex-Confederates to regain power in the state. Somewhere amongst our family belongings is a photograph of my great-great-great-great uncle in his uniform holding a sword and a letter signed by General William T. Sherman.
I agree with the guerilla warfare centers in Northern VA and MO, but I think the elephant in the room is guerilla's against the Confederacy. Like the one you mentioned and like Free State of Jones. It seems like it is a well kept secret. I live in NC, I am surprised about how many NC people were against the CSA and how many hangings there were to insure they stayed in line with the CSA. The only recourse was to be a pro union guerilla
Guerrilla warfare provides at least a partial answer to Edward Pollard's question as to why "there was no last great convulsion" marking the end of the confederacy. The "general decay of public spirit" he wrote about could be largely attributed to the general lawlessness that had its roots in the social turmoil resulting from perpetual guerrilla warfare. There was simply nothing left for the average citizen to hold on to.
we see little about the men who rode, i know one was named poole, can we have more background of the men who rode with them
mosby only weighed 130 lbs in a time when the average cavalryman weighed 145 lbs . heavier people wore their horses out.
Someone finally recognized the Ohio raid !!! But what of the ones who got away ??? One band went east while the other west in Athens county ???

I still resent the agression of the North. I have my own ways of opposing the us government that I employ today. For instance, no one in my family would ever agree to serve in the us millitary, or national guard, or police. I refuse to fly the american flag, salute the flag or pledge alllegience to it.

The South was never going to win the Civil War by organized, traditional methods. Guerialla war was the only way to win. But the South chose the West Point way, which guaranteed defeat.
Trying to speculate if the South could have won the war depends on what "win" means.

The narrator is "Too Cute By Half", and the title should be "Southern Guerrillas in the American Civil War". All I could stand to listen to deals specifically with Southern Guerrillas, and makes no mention of Union Guerrillas, but, Hey the victors & the Politically Correct write the history, now don't they?
