    Unpopular fantasy opinion. If you can condense your story into one book, make it a standalone. Fantasy doesn't NEED to span multiple books. Too often I see this done particularly with YA. Stories that have a paper thin plots, but somehow have 5 to 8 600+ page books.

    • @jakerockznoodles

      I too wish we'd have more standalone fantasy books. It's so intimidating starting a series of books that I'm not even sure I'll like that I often don't bother.

      I believe many authors have multiple books to increase their possibility of quick income without having to come up with a new idea for an original book. All you have to do is tweak and drag out the story with the characters that have already been created and established as opposed to creating a whole new story and characters.

    I don't like Sarah J Maas' stories because they contain a lot of things that I personally hate- trashy love-triangles taking over the plot, protagonists that are supposed to feel "yaaas queen slaaaay" but end up feeling more like "can someone slay *her* already?", wish-fulfillment over a meaningful narrative etc. But there are a lot of people that enjoy these things, and I can totally live with that. I 100% agree that just because something isn't up to your personal standards doesn't make it "overrated" when so many other people enjoy it. Anyone can say that about any book and technically they wouldn't be wrong or right. People who genuinely say that overate their own opinion, I think.

      Yeah but I do think objectivly bad EXISTS. I like trashy ranchy romances and I like Sarah J Maas her ability to write that but I hated A court of thorns and roses because the fantasy plot was painfully bad. There are people who can write fantasy romance who can also write a plot that makes an incling of sense. I feel like her fans overlook this side of her but it stops her from growing or anyone else from taking her spot. So yes subjective opinions are important but people who are objectivly bad at writing something being constantly hand hold by fans is not helping a genre.

    • @chiefpurrfect8389
      @chiefpurrfect8389 Před 4 lety +1

      @@MissNymwhen Oh yeah, echo-chambers aren't helpful to anyone! And I do think you can critique something from a technical point of view without factoring in your personal enjoyment of it. Does it have coherent characterization and narrative? Is there pay-off for things it establishes and plots it builds or are there loose ends? Does its structure make sense or is it confusing for the reader? And so on and so forth. But I also do think that there are people who play the constructive criticism/objectivity card to mask their personal dislike for something while making their opinion seem "superior" to that of people who happen to enjoy it, so there's that too. I guess it'd be helpful for people to understand and state which of their complains or compliments are subjective to them personally and which fall onto the more technical side when "reviewing" a book. Lots of arguments could have solved if only people were more open to that distinction.

  • @mly3537

    I feel like with Lord of the Rings, a lot of people who say "there are better books out now" don't take into account subjectivity? Like for some reason with classics, if people end up not enjoying them, some will automatically chalk it up to "it's overrated/been surpassed" rather than what it more commonly is, which is "this book just isn't for me."

      Lord of the Rings is a funny one for me because I fall right down the middle when it comes to the book to movie adaptation. In the book, I loved pretty much everything involving the hobbits and the other stuff I couldn't care less about. However, in the movies I felt more carried by Aragorns journey and (unpopular opinion) I felt like the relationship between Gimli and Legolas was better handled (although the extended cuts did Gimli no favours at all). However, movie Frodo IMO was a lot less interesting, which crippled that side of the story (except for the bit at Mt Doom, that was sick).

    • @UnseelieRose
      @UnseelieRose Před 4 lety +18

      I disagree that modern fantasy is better than The Lord of the Rings. In fact, the commenter has it backwards. Tolkien's works are literally the root of modern fantasy in British and American literature. (Obviously, I'm speaking about post-mythology.) There's actually a great lecture series on the topic called Of Sorcerers and Men, if you're interested. Before Tolkien, British and American publishers tended to regard fantasy as suitable only for children's books. So it's not that there are lots of other books better than Tolkien's works... It's that many other fantasy writers' works are built on Tolkien's foundation. Most of our other favorite fantasy novels probably wouldn't exist without Tolkien.
      Of course, I think one of the problems many people who don't like The Lord of the Rings encounter is that they are not accustomed to classic literary styles. Judging by the frankly impressive number of errors the commenter managed to fit into one (sort of) sentence, I'm going to guess they probably don't read much, and would therefore have trouble with the more archaic style in Tolkien's books. That might be why they are not a fan. LOL!

    • @jakerockznoodles
      @jakerockznoodles Před 4 lety +14

      @@UnseelieRose Not liking Tolkien's writing style is a perfectly legitimate reason to not like his works, as it is with any other author. There's no reason to be condescending to people just because they aren't a fan.

      @UnseelieRose Před 4 lety +9

      @@jakerockznoodles perhaps I should explain more clearly: I've heard numerous people say that they like the plot, but can't get through the heavy classical writing style. In fact I know two people who hated The Lord of the Rings in high school, then read it during or after college and loved it. So sometimes it really is a matter of readers having difficulty with the style when they're younger.
      Oh, also, I was trying to be wryly humorous, not condescending. Grammar tyrant humor is one of my favorites.

      Generally I tend to agree, but I had readers whose taste I really trust set me up to think a book was "the best book ever" and "full of good character development with complex relationships." Ended up being full of stereotypes - everything was a subversion instead of a deconstruction (instead of rejecting stereotypes EVERY character was either the opposite of everything their stereotype should be or the stereotype personnified) and I could predict everything the characters would do based on their archetypes. Also the highest rating on goodreads is 5/5 and in fairness if someone enjoys a work that much 5/5 is not "over" rating - its rating as you see fit lol But I do think I would have enjoyed it more had it been described as even "excellent" or "highly recommended" (I have ended up recommending it) as opposed to "the book to end all books." If a lot of people don't like her books that doesn't mean they're all being trendy, it means there's a lot of technical problems with the books or they just don't like the characters. I still read in twice and watched the films 4 or 5 times. Like LOTR, it's about nostalgia and the influence it had. And about a boring story that is really beautiful, the 1.5th book in the kingkiller chronicles is an amazing example. No plot, no dialogue, just one character. My unpopular opinion is that I actually want things about the world or culture that are not relevant in any way, mostly because they always come into the plot at one point, and whenever I find something out, I feel like I have to watch out for when it will matter.

    Unpopular Opinion:
    The Harry Potter books aren't *horrible* but they most certainly don't warrant such popularity and theme parks. The characters are all kinda stale and/or annoying imo. Like the most complex character is probably Snape. The plot is very repetitive and the story could have ended by book 4. I personality feel like if the world wanted a popular, theme park worthy book series that can be read by kids, teens, and adults, it should have picked up a Rick Riordan book series instead.
