      @CalvinAytch Před 4 lety +7

      Players that are stronger forehand side in general tend to want to control the short game more with short receive and short touch play. This seems to be so that they can attack long balls with forehand as it takes more room and time to set up. If you watch more backhand-oriented players, they have no problem to attack the shorter balls and play backhand close-table.

    I will try to practice the stop receive although I am a shakehand player - I learnt that I must go into the ball aggressively on the short serve, and take it while it did not yet have the chance to bounce up a lot. Interesting to try!

    • @skuzzle
      @skuzzle Před 4 lety

      Why should you? As a shake hand player you could attack with a strong backhand flick or set up a 4th ball attack with a long agressive push as a serve receiver.

    • @clarencepsaila4743
      @clarencepsaila4743 Před 4 lety +9

      @@skuzzle well, I see so many young players doing only this nowadays, the pace is always the same, accelerate the ball, overcome backspin with topspin and so on... However, I found that by varying the pace, using stop blocks sometimes, aggressive long pushes other times, and opening up when it is most suited, I have created a lot of unpredictability in my game and I am winning more, especially against young players who's preference is always to open up - they become predictable, I can immediately be ready for an aggressive block against them.

    Ryu's idea is slightly outdated. With the bouncier plastic ball, you can flick backspin serves closed to the net effectively. But his point is still valid. A good stop receive is deceptively effective.

    • @dickn.ormous1064
      @dickn.ormous1064 Před 4 lety +8

      It depends,if you are a shakehander and try to backhand flick everything you become vulnerable to no spin serves and serves to the short forehand by lefties.The forehand flick is a technique that even the Chinese try to avoid using.Liu Guoliang said the push return became relevant again with the new ball.

    • @TheVampB
      @TheVampB Před 4 lety +1

      @@dickn.ormous1064 That's very interesting. I would like to hear the rationale behind that reasoning. I had assumed that there's less forehand flick because people started to serve slightly longer than before. Can I ask for the source where LGL talked about it? Much appreciated.

    • @dickn.ormous1064
      @dickn.ormous1064 Před 4 lety +4

      @@TheVampB well,I think it was an article translated by member"zeio" on forum "mytabletennis.net".The Chinese avoid forehand flick,Zhang Zhike was notorious for almost never using the forehand flick return opting for the fh push or the banana flick.Watch any match of Xu Xin Vs Ma Long they always push with the forehand or even run around to push with the backhand.Neither Lin Gauoyang(spelling?)use the forehand flick although as a lefty he gets most serves on his left side.It's a very risky shot in general.I think Harimoto has a good forehand flick used as a rally shot which is totally crazy.The kid is going to invent a new style,I don't know whether he will surpass Fan Zhedong but he has tons of touch and he is not a mere loop machine.

    • @Ligatmarping
      @Ligatmarping Před 4 lety +3

      @@TheVampB I'm not sure but the reason maybe is that, although the ball bounces higher, it also gets less spin and goes further from the net, so you have little less angle for a powerfull flick and it becomes less effective? Sorry if my english is bad, I'm from Argentina, and, at competitive but not top level, the flick remains effective, but I could see that at world class it's not strong enough.
