the story behind the song is harder than most people think. When Joost was little he always watched the Eurovision Song Contest with his parents. Once when they were watching he said "one day I'm going to stand there too" and he did. Unfortunately his parents won't be there because when he was 12 his father died and a year later his mother also died. In the lyrics he also calls the song "papaoutai" (daddy where are you). Explanation of the ending part. Joost's father told Joost when he was very young. That borders are made by people. And that they don't really exist. He says he misses his father and tells his father that he listened to him. It is happy music but hard lyrics.

You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

As a Belgian i am schoked to see you drink la chouffe in a glass of delirium tremens.... we call that a sin LOL. But impressed with the glass collection in the back (the kwak glass is very hard to get). The event is in may 7 and 9 are the semi finals and 11 is the grand final. By the way ask your inlaws for a better translation then the youtube one. There are so many different levels to view the lyrics in dutch. You have to be fluent to understand them all and the references he makes. It is a catchy song so even if you don't understand everything it is nice, but when you understand it completly it is a masterpiece. I hope my country will give him 12points.

    • @renemeyer256

Dutch and Belgian (or Flemish?) audiences always give each other's entries a lot of points because we somewhat have the same taste in music of course. But this year the jury is from Wallonia and I definitely don't see them giving any points to a song in Dutch 😬

  • @uEryxx
    @uEryxx Před 3 měsíci +61

papa means dad in Dutch. Europapa is dedicated to his dad which passed away due to cancer. He was just a little kid 12 years old. His mom died a year later due to a cardiac arrest. Writing songs is like a therapy to dedicate songs mostly to his parents. His father give him the mindset that there are no borders. Borders are just invented by people so dare to think without limits. why don't you invent your own world. If you want to know more about Joost Klein you should give Florida 2009 a shot and Wachtmuziek. Both are in Dutch but there are lyrics for you can translate in English. It gives a better understanding who he is.

It is a true work of art, it is filled with so many hidden gems that go unnoticed, especially for those who aren't Dutch. But in short, Papa is daddy in Dutch, and all the musical transitions go from the old-school house, dance, and EDM to Gabber and New Kids "Hey Jonguh", the Red Bull outfit a.m.m. (the referrals are obvious imho but I'm Dutch). It is a work of art! And I'm proud of him.
But I think the backstory is so important to really understand it that might be the only downside, perhaps he will have something up his sleeve?! Perhaps he will have an English version for the EVSC?!

his song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself.
After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that.
Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.
The burning at the end is his way of (trying to) say goodbye to the burning pain of loosing his parents. Joost said about this: "Sometimes you have to let go of the things that are most precious to you. Where one door closes, many opportunities present itself. Mum and Dad, you will always be there for me, but I can't carry this pain forever."

At first, I didn't grasp the profound meaning, but upon closer inspection, the song reveals a deeper understanding. Clues within the lyrics suggest that the song is a tribute to the artist's parents, particularly his father. The phrase "Euro papa" carries significant weight, signifying a promise the artist made to his father before his passing - a commitment to one day grace the stage of the European Song Festival.

    Lyrics translated:
    Europe, let's come together
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    It's now or never
    I love you all
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
    But my passport is gone
Fortunately don't need a visa to be with you
So take the bus to Poland, or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris, so use my imagination
Do you have a euro please? Say "merci" and "please"
I lost truly everything, except the time
So I am travelling every day because the world is mine
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa, hey
I'm in Germany but I'm so alone
I am in Italy but still I feel pain
    Am running from myself
Calling for help all day long
Yes I even give people money, but there is no one to help me
    I don't need "es-car-gots", don't need "fish 'n chips"
    Don't need "paella", no
I don't even really know what that is
Turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
Won't stop until they say, "Yes, yes, he does that very well hey!"
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe, boy
    Hey
    Eu-ro-pa
At the end of the day
    We are all human beings
    My father once told me
It is a world without borders
    I miss you every day
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dаd
    I liѕtened to you

pronounce name as : yoast.. I never was much into techno etc (too old for that perhaps and basically hard rock/prog rock when I grw up) and certainly never thought Gabber (5:50 inw, pretty much Dutch cultural hard core) would catch me like it did!! Apart from that I think it's so carefully crafted production wise! Bloody catchy tune, make it a European anthem. Then the lyrics, has so many layers and more meaning than meets the eye. In other comments much will be explained I noticed. On the surface it sounds so happy but hidden deep inside is the pain and grief of loss (papa, well also mama) and the final scene could represent burning the pain in order to be able to carry on... many ways to look at it. I wonder how Joost (yoast) will bring all this across on stage. Perhaps he should have subtitles on backdrop screen.....
