- Part 2! 1946 CJ-2a Willys Jeep! Ian And Jamie Have Some Major Kustom Ideas 💡 👽
It is well known throughout Jeep Land that overhead valve engine will not fit under the flat fender hood. After much research and help from a viewer on our channel, we have an idea of how to make it fit! Ian also found some super cool jeep tires and rims and we get a first look at the rolling chassis!
Jamie has wished and WISHED for a Willy's Jeep for her Christmas and Birthday present 🎁 . Ian has had a beautiful Willys 1946 CJ-2a Jeep in the back sitting on a Willys M38A1 Chassis for the past few years. Ever since Ian and Jamie were married, Jamie has been eyeing it for a build on Full Custom Garage, sadly the project didn't make it to the show, but now she gets her wish! Jamie is learning about the history of these jeeps and is learning a little wrenching from Ian. The desert is a great place to go "jeepin" and Jamie wants to be part of the club in the warmer months and feel the wind in her hair as she drives to the local market. Jamie is down to get her hands dirty in the garage on this one! We appreciate our amazing support system in the desert with helping us procure the parts needed for this fun build!

You can tell Jamie really wanted to have a Jeep. She deserves her wish long before some of your other friends. I vote for Jamie!
I do and AGREED 🥰~ Jamie
A small body lift kit will provide clearance for that overhead valve engine without a bunch of other mods. Great project guys!
The big wheel well gap in front is the trademark Willy’s. I wouldn’t change it .
The company I used to work for when shops ordered parts I set up shipping to send a bag of peanuts with note “We went nuts over your order” I sent out candy with note “ We are being sweet to you”! I sent out several other items as well! Customers loved it!
I found a Root Beer Barrel in a parts delivery...made my day!
Looks like you have a CJ5 chassis. As you found out the tub bolts the same way but the extra inch is in the front. I just finished up my CJ3B (hi hood) and there's not quite as much clearance behind the front wheels, but it doesn't look out of place. Have a look at some CJ3B pictures and you'll soon figure out where the front was lifted for the F-head engine.
You really found the right girl, Ian! Jamie is such an eager, enthusiastic, and supportive partner! She's really into it! Great personality too 😊.
That's a fact! Jamie is wonderful.
I 2nd that.
Very excellent 😊❤
Merry Christmas kids from Missouri!
Jamie's as cool as the other side of the pillow. 😉✌
I'm with the others who say use the extra wheelbase to your advantage and stretch the body or move the front fenders to get a look that pleases you and Jamie. :)
The interference on the Hurricane engine in an earlier CJ2 is the carb. The old school solution was to either cut a hole in the hood for the air cleaner to stick through and some would fab a little hood scoop for it. Or, just put just enough body lift on it between the frame and body to allow the air cleaner to clear under the hood. I'd go for the body lift myself.
I've also seen where they move the air filter lower to the side of the motor. They had like an elbow air pipe between filter & carb that was flattened on top of the carb. Maybe just use one of those cone shaped mesh air filters off to the side. 😋
Or a pinto carb...
Merry Christmas Ian and Jamie!
The reason the military used your tire tread design is it made it difficult for bad actors to look at the latent tracks and determine which way the vehicle was traveling .
This is a myth. They were a called NDT. Non Directional Tire. They were a Goodyear invention that enabled WW2 vehicles that uses them to get equal "bite" of the terrain whether going forwards or backwards.
They were also cheaper and faster to produce than directional tires.
@@Jarod1941 Correct.
Is evolving will gain personality on it's own seen u do it many times ian cheers 🥂 😊
The rims and tires look RAD!!
Move the front spring pedestals back. Don’t cut frame?
Love the Jeep project! Merry Christmas !!
The really cool thing about the original Jeep are they were designed for ease of repair and ultra reliability!
Very true, right up until the Renegades, they were still very basic.
The longer wheel base is going to be a huge advantage in handling and stability. I would retain that and then build around it, you are obviously fully capable of extending the fenders (or ever just repositioning them a little) if need be.
I second this emotion! Keep the wheelbase as is. Just bring the bottom piece of the fender forward a few inches & I'tta be fine! 😋
It is 1" longer only, not really significant.
Once you get the motor mocked up in the chassis, look at a 1 barrel Holley from an early 60's Ford 200 6 or maybe even a 50's 223 6 cylinder. It might clear the hood without a hole. It's the carburetor that sits too high and not the valve cover. I'd leave the A1 chassis stock. Any wheelbase you can get just makes it ride better. Want to close an inch of gap, run a bigger tire!
Sure do miss my 46 2a... had a lot of fun putting it together...
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year Ian & Jamie!
Better than watching football!❤😊
Yeah, I have Raiders vs Chiefs on right now, but not paying much attention. This looks better.
You probably don't have much trouble with porch pirates out there.
I wish the two of you a very Merry Christmas!
Very cool project!
Ian you’re the best. I do miss your shop inspector pit bull. I enjoyed his comments on your projects. I know he wasn’t too happy when you used his dog dish on the VW. He wasn’t too happy. Keep on welding and imagining what you’re making. You are a true artist. Not many left and not many coming up in the future.
Jamie loves her Jeep..she will be a expert by the time this's over.
A perfect team together.
Merry Christmas Ian and Jamie🎄🎄
More PSI on the road dirt mud with those tires👍🏁🇺🇸
Enjoy how you explain as you go. Great job on the camera and all the work getting it loaded up. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas
Hey guys! Thanks for the Christmas 🎄 post! Great finish for the holiday ☃️☃️☃️🌲🌲🌲
You can also add 2 inch body rinse blocks. I had a 1959 utility wagon that I did it to with no problem.
I would think the body lift would save a lot of work
It worked out well for me. I would do it again with the body off already and the need to make mounts on the frame. Also, it would be easy and inexpensive.
Happy Christmas you two! 🎅
I know this is just a quickie simple project, but Jamie’s jeep is my favorite project of the the full custom garage ever!
I'm excited as well, i'm sure it will be unique.
With a Flathead 4 cylinder engine those are the perfect wheel and tire combination!
Bone stock.
This video is a nice Christmas present 🎁
Awsome guys going to a great ride Jamie
Back in the mid 70's i had a 1968 CJ 5 with a Buick V6 in it rebuild the engine put headers on it a better cam anf a 500 cfm Holley carburetor run real good and had tons of FUM playing in the MUD and sand
My 'daily' is a flatfender (titled as '46) with Kenne Bell equipped Buick 225 'Odd Fire' V6, too much carb and cam, MSD, fat headers w/ fenderwell exhaust, 4 speed with Warn OD on Dana18 transfer case... .
You have a beautiful place Ian . Thanks man .
Ian and Jamie coming along Nicely Merry Christmas 🎅🏻🤶🏻
A friend once told me how he used to put needle bearings into a Rudge motorcycle gearbox. He would slather the surface with grease, put the bearings in place, then tie sewing cotton around the completed shaft to hold the bearings in place while inserting the shift into the gearbox. The reason he used the cotton was that the first time the gearbox was used, the cotton would disintegrate without damaging the gearbox.
Prior to using this method, he had no end of trouble getting the bearings to stay in place because they would fall off the shaft while he was trying to insert the shaft.
Merry Christmas everyone
It’s normal for the front wheels to be towards the front of the fenderwells on the flat fender jeeps. It looks a little odd, but it’s typical. The extra inch is no big deal. Yes, the 3B had the taller hood and cowl due to the new overhead valve engine being higher than the old flathead Hurricane engine.
You guys are special, I've had my jeep 46 years I've replaced everything a couple times.. I've never got any Fricken Candy
The longer the wheel base, the better the ride . .
Maybe they only send candy to good guys .
@@carrollfranklin9807
I think you nailed it ! . . .
jeep people are all about helping each other!
I like the wheelbase the way it is, it’ll ride a lot better too
Agree.
I see his and hers Jeep's in y'all's future . . . LOL Merry Christmas you two
Those tires, as you mentioned, are used extensively on military vehicles. They are called "NDT" tires... Non Directional Tread. They get equal bite going either forward or backwards.
Yep. We just called em military tires. First set I put on my F100 4wd were 900 x 16's here in the Fla. Everglades. Our mud is a bit DEEP! 😂😂
Another great video from a dynamic duo. Pushed a lot of snow with a 47 Jeep, did a great job and was easy to maneuver
I hope to see more of Jamie turning wrenches too as the project moves forward.
This is going to be a fun project for sure thanks
The candy is like a goodwill gesture. It encourages you to shop again
I must say again I Love watching your videos...IAN AND JAMIE GREAT DUO...I send much Love and thanks...Joe in NY
The F head engine will fit under the hood and just barely clear. Usually you have to fold over the metal seam under the center of the hood. The difficult part is getting an air breather to work under the hood. I had one that had a hole in the hood the size of the throat of the carburetor. When you shut the hood you could then place the breather\ air filter on the carburetor.
I’m from Tucson and if you need advice or parts there’s a place here that’s been around forever and does only older Jeeps. It’s called Willys Works and they have a website. ✌🏼
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Love you both for putting this out on Christmas Day for us Ian and Jamie people that live for your videos! Thanks for the fix! Love you both Merry Christmas too you both!
Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎅
Merry Christmas
You could always move the front fenders forward a little to centre the front wheels without altering the chassis.
Looking forward to see the build
Merry Christmas God bless and stay safe
did you consider moving the front leaf mounts back, that might work if the oil pan has clearance.
The M38A-1 has a larger gas tank (17 gals) so it has a well that protrudes downward. Because of that the frame doesn't have a mount under the gas tank on that side. Also, the front mounts don't get used where those triangular parts are at the front of the tub. They just seem to ride there in space. I've never had or worked on a flat fender so wondered if the mounts would be similar between them , so I think that's pretty cool that they line up so well.
Great video hope you both had a great Christmas and a prosperous New year
I so enjoy your videos! Having several projects on going at the same time keeps your content fresh! I’m looking forward to the Jeep restoration, I had a 96 CJ I was working on until my back wouldn’t let me work on it anymore and my wife wasn’t supportive about the car. Jamie is a great compliment to Ian as she is interested in the projects. Merry Christmas to you both!
Thank you!
Hey Ian since the Jeep is leaf spring get some or make some leaf spring relocation brackets and just move it back till it looks good with the fenders that's what I would do don't cut the frame if not brackets you can always cut the brackets in a leaf springs off the frame and slide it back it'll still look good it'll still have its length and you'll still be able to put that motor in hope this helps you out
I enjoy your channel. The high hood cj3b i think looks out of proportion to the clean lines of the lower hood hurricane engine models. I had a cj3a low hood body and changed the original engine to the overhead engine. I did not raise the hood because the valve cover on the engine fits under the lower hood. The problem is the original carburetor is too tall to fit. Some owners cut a hole in the hood and made a scoop to fit the tall carb. I used the old school fix and got a lower profile carburetor from an early ford. It bolts right on and fits under the hood just fine.
That's interesting, hope they see your comment.
Merry Christmas thanks for the vid for me to wake up and watch on boxing day morning,
I've had enough of the silly season overeating and drinking sessions so back to normal watching some Ian and Jamie content. Cheers from Adelaide Matt
Merry Christmas Ian & Jamie
Shortening the frame up front will also shorten the space for front drive shaft, that front drive shaft is already very short. Beware of frame mods causing downstream problems.
I buy a lot from Kiaser Willys and they always send hard candy , and yes quite often you will get split shipments, but they are great to deal with
Fill the center part in the front frame Wells with a big old Badlands winch
Move the fenders forward a little bit to where they stick out past the front end
I am a wood worker and the guy I get my sandpaper from puts candy in my order too. Love both of your shows.
That tread style is called FOD (foreign object disposing) . So they didn't track debris onto runways, that would cause damage to planes.
Try NDT, Non Directional Tread.
Merry Christmas , looks like a fun build!
Great video!! I use both Army Jeep Supply and Kaiser Willy’s, Jeepsterman has a good selection too. They all seem to throw candy in. I’m interested too see if you can get that motor low enough to clear the hood.
Love the multi project format. Something different every time.
May be you can extend the body where the doors are ?
I was told a hockey puck lift (one inch additional) between body and frame allows the f head motor to fit under the a body/hoods of the a's.
Ian for the followers that watch this video..the tread style used by the military was designed so that the enemy could not tell which direction the vehicle traveled in war time
johnjason7204 They also howl like a son of a gun on the street.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 That's how you tell how fast you're going lol..
@@65cj55 The first Jeep that my Late Dad bought was a 1943 Willy's Flatty. It was totally stock. And on a really good day it might see 50 mph. but it was a climbing son of a gun. R.I.P. Dad and Mom. I miss you both very much.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 Yes they climb like a cat, sorry about your Mum & Dad, we know it's going to happen one day, but it doesn't make it easier, and we're never ready when it does, keep them alive in your heart and memories.
@@65cj55 Thanks. The house that I live in is the one that we built for Mom and Dad when Dad retired. And out of all of the people who where on the crew that started on the house the very first day I'm the only one left. Everybody else has passed away.
When I read the description of the clip I went WTF, what do you mean your retiring the Jeep project you haven’t even started building it yet, and then I saw Ian roll them in and went oh I get it, a little dad joke. Can’t wait to see the direction this takes I do believe it’ll be a sweet little ride when it’s all finished
I think move the fenders ahead about 5 inches and go with that and the side and hood lift. We know the Dr. can do it
Merry Christmas to the both of you. Stay safe
Looking good 👍👍
Whoever is saying things about you saying stuff to get sponsored, clearly doesn’t understand what a job is, or running or owning a business or organization….. if people are willing to sponsor you because of the awesome work you do, then more power to you, you have to make a living doing this, which is all for our entertainment or enjoyment, so do whatever you need to save and make money because it only gives us a better product, and gives you the ability to continue to make these awesome projects for us.
The mb/gpw grille is awesome looking on these , the headlights are on hinges so you can light up the engine compartment to work at night, lol...
Love the old flat fender jeeps. I've had 4 jeeps over the years. A 1946 and 1947 CJ2A. The "47 had an F head swapped in that was from a CJ3B or pickup so it had a hood scoop to accommodate the carb. The valve cover is still below the original 2A hood. Your wheelbase is not too far off. The radiator mounts to that front cross member.
Then I had a 1975 CJ5 that my dad and I did a complete fiberglass body tub swap when I was in high school. the last one I had was a mid 90's XJ Cherokee sport. Really want another one but the prices have gone out of site. I'll have to look in my stuff. I may still have some old CJ2A parts in the garage.
I’ve got a 1946 with an F head in it several carbs will interchange with the original that are shorter and you don’t have to put a hood scoop on it that way you can let the windshield down on the hood in the original way everything else fits perfectly fine
Looks great. Coming along nicely. Should be a fun little ride
You should contact C & C Equipment for a full line of aftermarket Jeep parts
Ian tip on disassembly of transmission mark direction of parts I use cut off wheel to do little mark to rear 😊
That’s going to be one kool Jeep!
Where I used to work one supplier always sent M&Ms in the box. We dealt with them alot. 👍👍
Just didn't know if they were sending plain or peanut.
dalecherry4044 But did you ever get any brown ones.? R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 brown ones are always the most.
I love this Jeep series. I am currently working on the restoration of a 1960 CJ5 that is turning into a nightmare. Months of work patching the rusted metal. I could have bought a new tub for the amount of work I put into the body. But then again it wouldn't be a 1960 Jeep. To answer your question Kaiser Willy Jeep does add candy into every order. Jolly Rancher seems to be their candy of choice. Keep this series coming! A compliment to Jamie. Her editing of the series has really gotten good. I especially like the introduction of music in the video of the 1940 Chevy door restructuring episode.
Believe you worked on a CJ2a for a friends grandson ! Front fenders set will behind tires just like yours ! Why not get original Go Devil 134 L Head engine instead of F Head 134 Hurricane that came out of a CJ3b & early CJ5 then you won't need a taller grill , hood , firewall & cowling ! Should be plenty out there since everyone is doing V8 swaps these days ! Don't believe you're suppose to re-use old U Bolts once they've been torqued down because of how they put the threads on ! Also you might want an after market dual master cylinder & bigger brake drums for safety reasons ! My CJ3a you had to put your foot thru the floor to stop it !
If you convert it to a 3B high hood, you'll also need to change the grill to fit. There is more than one company out there that have them in stock ready to ship.
Always thought the 3b was the ugliest jeep ever..
2a w the military grille is the best.
The cowl height is different.
Great video Ian!
Great project 👍
Merry Christmas, can't see what projects the new year brings.
The Spaceman & Galaxy Girl.
gonna be a cool project
I have a '50 Willys Wagon that I'm building and I get parts from Kyser Willys ,and Jeepsterman . Kyser sends candy I think .
