I'd argue it's better to have your best trailer be the final one because it keeps up the momentum going into the launch. You don't want to have the final look at your game pre-launch leave people feeling mixed.
Trailers getting worse over time makes me think of forspoken… I don’t need to tell you how that experiment went.
or you can do like FF16 and have every single trailer be an absolute seller and keep delivering content like the state of play with even more banger and ride that hype to launch I think ff16 marketing has been stellar.
Zelda is one of those few franchises where even if marketing makes a game look bad, you still have faith in it to succeed cause it's Zelda. If the next Sonic game was marketed with the same world as Frontiers and only a few new mechanics, there would be actual riots at SEGA headquarters.
Especially when you consider people who thought "Oh this is just an overpriced DLC" or "Can it even expand on what made BOTW good", then Nintendo goes "BAM! here you go fuckers".
Also Nintendo is under a lot less pressure to have TotK be a success like they were with BOTW, the marketing could afford to be a lot more lax because of that.
Hype has a shelf life and it doesn't last a year. Having this trailer just a month before launch is perfect because it gets everyone hyped up for launch and doesn't have time for the hype to die before launch.
Exactly, a friend that wasn't hyped because "it looks like a big DLC" went to preorder the game after this trailer dropped. And by the comments I'm reading on this and other videos about the trailer, that's happening with a LOT of people.
Agreed especially when it comes to the legend of Zelda series.
Cool, this literally the only trailer they released that was any good. It's best to realease only good trailers, not bad ones and then finally release a decent one before launch. Bad marketing.
@@emiami458 I've always been of the mind that the other trailers were solely to appease the eager fans. For me, at least, even though the trailers weren't very good, I was just happy to see that the game was making steady progress. Maybe it's dumb but I just kept tuning in with faith that they would deliver like they did with botw, and boy, am I glad that they did.

The "Oh sh*t...Oh SH*T! I got goosebumps" is the most fulfilling thing about this entire reaction. Going from "this looks neat" to "WOW" is the joy of a Legend of Zelda game.
Zelda is the best game series ever made full stop. I come to this channel because I love fighting games and have been an avid fgc member for over a decade. That doesn't take away what this series is.

I definitely get why people wanted a trailer like this earlier, but by saving all the cards until this late. It really does feel like this game has so much more to offer than anyone expected.
Specially AFTER the tough pill to swallow that was the $70 price. They were smart about it.

Im still very skeptical; not rushing out to purchase it, loads are happy about the game, but I still feel it should have been DLC.

I think the way they marketed this game was perfection. they kept the trailers minimal in the beginning and then went all out on the final one creating so much hype in the final month before the game releases. Cause right now I literally cannot wait a month for how excited I am for this. This will end up being the game of the decade no doubt
No lie, I had goosebumps throughout the entire trailer and that chilling feeling went over me about 8 times ... lol They NAILED the music for this trailer.
For me, it's that moment when we get the Ganondorf shot and then the main theme kicks in again. Frigging chills.
My big chills moment is when the music cuts out with Link siding the elevator, just the creepy chanting, then BAM the music comes back with Lizardboy’s appearance

I have 0 nostalgia for Zelda and when the og theme kicks in even I got goosebumps. Something about an unlikely hero saving their friends against all odds is such a trope. But it's a trope for a reason. It's literally the best shit.

And why we will always look up to that ideal. Whether it's something like superman or link. It just makes us feel something we can't deny as true. We are unlikely heroes but us like link have to choose it. At any moment he could walk off and forget Zelda and Hyrule. But he doesn't.

honestly, i think it makes sense that this is the best trailer. Aonuma himself that development on the game was more or less complete, so everything that they could've possibly wanted to show off was all in there, which likely was not true for the 1st or 2nd trailers.
True believers didn't need this trailer a year ago and knew this game was going to deliver. Nintendo knew what they were doing
Everyone knew the game would be good, the foundation was already rock solid. A good trailer like this just brings the hype and that's all we were hoping for at this point.

They show nothing much for the first game so when I played it I felt like I was playing something I was not familiar with. That what made it fun.

I think having this trailer after the gameplay trailer was perfect because there was so much crafting they showed off here in the final one. And now knowing what it is we are even more excited while watching. Also best for last.

It's just cool to hate Nintendo, has been that way since n64. If you pick the Worst main-line Zelda game it is still better than what roughly half the studios in the industry can muster. The 'doubts' that a lot of people were having were mostly let's play-grifters who became BotW "fans" because (along with the successful release of the switch) the public suddenly decided it was cool to like Nintendo ips for a little bit again.
This isn't aimed at Max, I'm just talking about the internet as a whole. Nintendo does things it's own way and it's very successful with it's long-time fans. They learned a HARD lesson when they captured and tried to maintain a mainstream audience with the Wii.

The 3-headed dragon is known as Gleeok. He was a boss in the original game, and something similar has been a part of a lot of other Zelda games. One great example is Trinexx in A Link to the Past.

I would guess that maybe over the course of the development for TotK they just had more and more ideas, which increased the development time.
Also the Fuse mechanic alone is pretty crazy, I guess that took a lot of time to. Figuring out how all the items work, after being fused, with what effects they will have etc and implementing it all in the game properly.
Also testing all of that, so that it works properly with as little bugs and issues as possible, since it's probably something that could be easily exploited.
Sure they basically used the groundwork of BotW, but from what it looks like they also added a lot and reworked parts of the map etc. How much, we will find out once its launches.
They also improved the graphics and I feel like they also improved performance.
So it's not like they just used BotW and just added a bit more stuff and that took them 6 years.
And I mean, we talk all the time about crunch and that games shouldn't be rushed. And then we have people that complain that it takes to long?
Also nintendo is kinda notorious for taking their time and only releasing something once it's ready.
We didn't had any new F-Zero and Nintendo said that the reason why is, because they had no new interesting idea's to make it stand out from the previous ones. Probably the same with Star Fox etc.
Also the whole pandemic/lockdown probably pushed back the release date a bit
I think keeping the best trailer for last is a good idea. It builds hype and momentum. Plus if you show the best trailer first, all the trailers shown afterward won't compare.
God I’m playing this game and this trailer now hits sooooo much harder now. It’s such an amazing trailer before but it’s just a masterpiece knowing the context of the game now.

I agree that the final trailer being the best one is how it should be. The fault lies in us trying to predict what nintendo will or what they should've done:) . They just like surprising people. Whether that's good or bad is subjective but as grown man-child, I love it:).
Final fantasy, Star Wars, and Zelda TOTK are shaping up to be some great complete experiences:). I hope everyone has a great weekend:)
The shock value will be less effective if the better one was used out the gate is more fitting for final trailer for that big push on people who have little faith in Zelda team, you want something to be amazing at the end because hype usually dies off later on

People are worrywarts and have been reacting like this to every video game sequel lately because they haven’t caught on to the fact that promo cycles have changed from what they used to be. But even BotW’s rollout was similarly shrouded in unknown. I understand why it’d be difficult to be full-on hyped before these last two showings, but “worried” is just a bit much. This dev team was never going to merely put out DLC tier content as a sequel, let alone take six years doing so. They made BotW, they’re not incompetent!
From what I understand it WAS going to be dlc but they realized that they had enough material to make a whole ass sequel and decided to do that instead.
I'm looking forward to watching people build working Gundams to fight Ganon in.
As a longtime fan of the series I had never been so mixed about playing a Zelda game but now This actually looks like the Zelda game that i want and need I'm very impressed so far!

Max saying its been 6 years is ridiculous. For someone that boasts about how much he knows about developing games, he's clearly showing that he doesn't know that much! Especially considering the play testing required with the new mechanics they included in the game (combining any item together) and how that works within the game's physics!
The trailer for Zelda BOTW (the best one out of all of them) was like 1-2 months before launch, so this trailer was released now to make people hyped just before launch, otherwise people would just forget about it after 6-12 months.
Leading up to this final trailer, people really wanted them unleash a trailer that gave people hype like Breath of the Wild did before that game came out. I say they succeeded.
I'm still a little curious if they'll be any Age of Calamity references somewhere or if that's just completely separate. Could be a fun tie in but I also wouldn't be surprised if they just ignored its existence since it was developed by a different studio.
AoC is a prequel tho, like it still canon but i doubt they will reference something for it
Considering the game actively went against BotW's original story bu sacrificing the events of the calamity in favor of a "oh no save your friends 😢" plot, thus retconning BotW even happening, I don't imagine they could really reference anything meaningful
I liked Age of Calamity but I think it'd be funny if the only reference to it was Sidon and Riju being like "hey remember the time we were summoned to another timeline to save the Champions and stop the Calamity" and nobody else believes them.

The dead king and champions in Breath of The Wild are still alive and aid Link along with the Yiga clan who sides with Hyrule in fighting a different form of Calamity Ganon. Nobody dies and it all takes place 100 years in the past. TOTK follows Breath of the Wild as we see Sidon Riju and Teba's son aiding Link, not the the original champions as they have passed on to the afterlife at the end of BOTW
Well, given that you can hear the age of calamity theme when they show the champion successors, who were a huge part of AOC, it's safe to say it'll definitely be referenced

This trailer changed me on a MOLECULAR level man
I will say, in my opinion in later titles, the zelda games seems to hold back on using the main theme much, and then are able to use it to great effect because of it. Not just this trailer, but I feel that way about Skyward Sword as well. The song doesn't play the whole game, and then when you finally play "The Song of the Hero" it hits that it's a song you have known all along. Issues with the tadtones aside, i love that so much.
Tldr i think zelda has learned to use its main theme quite well.
Similarly, in Breath of the Wild I don't think it plays anywhere else in the game except in the music for Hyrule Castle, which I, and I assume most people, didn't go into for a good 50 hours or so, it's so good.
This trailer was so good it reminded me of how high on my favorite games list BoTW is.

I've been super hyped for this game for 3 years since the original announcement. This trailer just made everything so much more real. I don't know why anyone has been doubting it. The worst 3d zeldas are still far better than a lot of other games. This was always going to be good.

This is Gerudo Ganondorf's first appearance since Twilight princess 17 years ago. If you count Hyrule Warriors, then whenever the Switch version came out. So, that's not that long of a wait.

Personally, I can see why they've been relatively quite until the gameplay video and especially now: hype works in crescendo; waiting for the game to come out would've been more painful; would've been more difficult for people who mind spoilers (not me unless it's something major or the full game) to avoid them; other companies could've even copied some ideas!

Even the graphics have improved considerably. If you compared Zelda in this trailer to any of her cutscenes in BOTW, she has considerably more depth now!

The music in this trailer fuckin slaps donkey balls bro. Shit was glorious.
In all truth the hype for this game has been phenomenal already. Some people have just been a bit pissy that Nintendo haven't dumped multiple super trailers like this on us. We're one month out and I guarantee this games sales will far surpass it's predecessor's not simply because of the massive user base.
"They should have put this out 6-12 months ago". Only if you sell hype for a living. For the rest of the world, this is what marketing should be. Not gigantic multi-tier campaigns meant to fluff your erection for as long as possible, but glimpses at a project, then a single well-made trailer a month before launch.
This is a team that's confident in its word-of-mouth sales. BotW sold 1 million at launch, and 30 million lifetime sales. They're not out to trick people. They're out to preserve mystery and win people with quality. They'll let the game do the talking, and anyone on the fence can wait until after release.
Here's hoping the industry shifts towards this.

Not gonna lie, as someone who loved BotW but wasn't as hyped for the sequel, as Max said, they actually did it with this trailer, this was pretty amazing.
I'm not gonna lie I've been excited for this game since it was announced but that's cause I love zelda and your right this trailer was the best and gave me goose bumps. I do disagree with it doesn't look much different cause it does, yes same land and world but different assets it is obviously a few years after breath of the wild

@@omarthepsycho yea as someone who played botw a lot it looks completely to me with different ways to play. I mean God od war and doom eternal did the same thing , and no one complained. it's just my opinion though.

Generating hype for a game is very nuanced. If they had dropped this trailer 12 months ago what else would they have shown now?
They created buzz for for the game and ended with a bang a month before release getting people on the edge of their seats
4:00 That's just wrong. When you throw the trailer too early, the hype dies down. Releasing a trailer this good a month before launch turned the hype into a frenzy, and that will translate directly to sales. You don't want the fire this trailer set to smolder down over a year.
The last trailer for BOTW was a whole 3 months before its release, so no. And almost a yera later from the rls of this game, your comment aged like milk lol.

😳 I don’t know if Max is aware of the immense amount of programming and sheer complexity involved introducing Fuse, Ultrahand, Recall, Ascend into the game and making it work with the whole environment and physics…
This game makes BOTW seem primitive because the Magnesis, Freezing, Stasis, etc is baby level of complex compared to this…
I guess when you’re used to games doing the exact same thing in each iteration, on the shallow surface level of judging a game that looks similar: “nothing has changed” 😂 It’s all under the hood.
