  • At the Qualcomm 5G Summit, VP of Technical Standards at Qualcomm Juan Montojo delivered a masterclass about the 5G NR Release 17. In March 2022, 3GPP finalized Release 17, the third major release of the global 5G standard. So, what did this introduce to the 5G ecosystem?
For starters, Release 17 included an expansion of mmWave, enabling more capacity, new use cases, and more widespread deployment. Through Release 16, mmWave networks were only capable of operating at a maximum spectrum band of 52 GHz. Now, mmWave networks can operate in the 71 GHz spectrum band, a significant jump.
3GPP Release 17 also enabled an expansion of reduced capability devices (NR-light) such as wearables, smart sensors, surveillance cameras, and other IoT tech. As the amount of 5G connected devices grows, so do the capabilities of those devices. Release 17 saw an expansion of antennas, higher throughput, better battery life, extended coverage, enhanced location accuracy, and more.
Perhaps most significantly, Release 17 introduced satellite communications for multiple devices and IoT leveraging a 5G NR framework - expanding coverage and use cases for non-terrestrial networks (NTN). Finally, topology expansion led the way for more efficient deployments - and more connectivity more broadly.
Not only does this mark the completion of the latest 5G specifications, enabling countless enhanced 5G system capabilities, but it also sets the foundation for the upcoming 5G Advanced evolution starting in Release 18.
