- Ray Reardon, a snooker legend who won the World Snooker Championship six times in the 1970s, has died at the age of 91. John Virgo has led the tributes to the Welsh star.
Reardon, who is remembered as one of the greatest snooker players ever, passed away on Friday after a long battle with cancer, his wife Carol has said.
In the 1970s, Reardon ruled the world of snooker, much like Steve Davis did in the 1980s and Stephen Hendry in the 1990s. He won World Snooker Championship titles in 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1978. Known for his charm and popularity, Reardon also made headlines recently in December as one of the oldest players to score a century break. He was awarded an MBE in 1985 and was inducted into the Snooker Hall of Fame in 2011.
Since his passing, many have shared their grief. Former player and BBC pundit John Virgo tweeted, "Sad news. Ray Reardon passed away last night. It was an honor to have known him. A true great of our game. RIP."
Shaun Murphy posted, "What a man you were, Ray. An absolute animal on the table, and a total gentleman off it. It was an honor to spend time with you, whether we played snooker or golf. I'll treasure every minute. Rest in peace."
Jimmy White MBE said, "Gutted to hear my very good friend Ray Reardon has passed away. A total class act and very kind to me when I was making my way in the game. A giant of the game. Rest in peace, mate."
Mark Williams wrote, "Ray was one of the best sportspeople ever from Wales and the best snooker player. He inspired many of us to start playing. He put snooker on the map, alongside Alex Higgins, Jimmy White, and Steve Davis. We owe a lot to them for making the game popular. He is a real inspiration."
Ray Reardon leaves behind a lasting legacy. May he rest in peace. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.

🙏
One of the very first professional players I saw on television. RIP.
True, may he rest well 🙏
Ray Reardon was a gentleman, sportsman and a snooker icon. He may have dominated the snooker world during the 1970’s but always did so with humility and respect. RIP Ray!
Lovely man Great player in the 70s and early 80s

The GOAT of welsh snooker and a great man. RIP Ray

Ray had that 100 break in the club I play in, he was well loved by all the members in the club and a true gentleman, he wanted and loved sharing his knowledge and skills. I will miss him and lucky enough to call him a friend.
Ray was top tier
🙏
What a lovely man Ray was.
One of the giants of the golden age of snooker , an era that put the game firmly on the map .RIP
He was definitely right when he says his achievements never really got mentioned enough! But ray was their when most of us never knew what snooker was.
Had the pleasure of meeting him when he got married in South Devon. What a lovely man he was as well as being a Snooker Legend RIP RAY❤️

Outstanding snooker player/sportsman - lucky enough to see Mr Reardon and Pierre Mans play exhibition matches in Johannesburg back in the 70s...

A diplomat for the sport and for Wales, a proper gent always.
Legend ❤
Grew up watching this lovely man. RIP ❤️
I Met Ray many years ago in the 90s what a lovely guy rip Ray 😢
RIP true hero for millions
So sad a great guy
Played him at Butlins
One of the best ever rip legend 🏴
Ray was indeed a legend of the game, it's nice & also different that an American is commenting on the video, you can hear the appreciation in his voice, as a long time fan of the game, i don't believe there has ever been a american on the snooker tour, 😅
True nice guy don’t forget about his 6 world titles
Proper gentleman and snooker player, if only the top players now had this man’s humility and love of the game without the need of remuneration or attention. When Ronnie demands to know what money there was for the highest break Ray was demanding that the sport be enjoyable and played in the right spirit while being paid a few pounds a week.😢😢😢😢😢
I met him and pl layed snooker within many times in minehead where he worked in the holiday camp i was 10-11-12 every year i went there and he was there . Obviously a brilliant snooker player but you would never meet a nicer person.
Nobody who ever 'loved' watching Snooker, will be able
to separate 'that' from 'Ray'..
'Ray'(Count Dracula)...hands in
pockets 'warming his arms with the 'duck' flight takeoff..or
turning on his heels to say something comical to get the
crowd 'giggling'..mixed with playing skills to get them 'goggling'!...don't forget his
'Iron will' to be 1st.
Many will feel his passing as a
loss in 'their' family though they never knew him.
'But' they'll always have their
'Snooo..kerrr' memories...'yes'
' there you are'!
Who's cutting onions 😭
He 'knew his ',Onions'....white, red, yellow brown green, blue, pink and black(which probably reminded him of the 'coal' that nearly cost him his life, when trapped in a Welsh mine'@@medardug
True legend .RIP
Top guy RIP❤
R.I.P Ray....
well said...
Ray was the master back in the day. Wonder if John Virgo remember Jim Meadowcroft our local professional in Bacup back in the day. Inspired a lot of us and was a very talented snooker player who actually beat Ray in the then UK championship in the 70’s. Rest easy lads
RIP RAY GOD BLESS YOU
R I p a true.legend one of the greats
Nobody who ever loved watching snooker will be able to think about without 'Ray'...'chuckling'....hands in pockets...doing....duck flight
take off ...turning on his heels
and saying 'something' to tickle the audience...and don't
the 'Iron will' to be 1st past the
winning post!
Many we'll a lose to their family even though they never
knew him...but they'll always
have their 'Snooo..kerrr! memories..yup!
😭 May he rest well
My favourite player from my youth. RIP
Why is there a picture of Dennis Taylor playing though?
rip ' dracula' a warrior champion on the table and a gentleman off it
😢
They kept showing a pic of another snooker great who wasn’t Ray Reardon....the Northern Irish player Dennis Taylor with the large glasses on ....& no mention of him ....
Towards the end of his career, Ray also started wearing those special snooker glasses that Dennis made famous and so presumably the video creator did not realise that they were at times using Dennis's photo instead while wearing the glasses.
I never saw him wear those oversized glasses that Dennis Taylor popularized.....I left the UK in late 81...& snooker here was a nonstarter here ...and still is.....No wonder Neil Robertson left these shores ...and I e no idea how Eddie Charlton add a living from snooker either...A,though I think he left here too in the early 60’s a year when snooker started to ‘tame off’ over there with the invention of colour TV..Taylor made for snooker...I recall Whispering Ted Lowe saying ‘ for those of you watching in black & white, the pink is behind the blue’ classic commentary...Remember the classic cricket one....The bowler’s Holding the batsman’s Willey . Lol....
What did the rocket say??
Ronnie had massive respect for his masters Ray (RIP)
If he was English he would be a sir.
A great man also good commentary John virgo where's the cue ball you will never forget that ever xxxlol❤❤❤ all the best 1:45
