All of the players, I think, did like a Session 0 in private where they tried out their characters before going on livestream. The introductions followed up from those offscreen adventures. So Liam and Sam did one together, Travis, Laura, and Marisha did one together, not sure if Taliesin and Ashley did one together. Matt pre=planned the intros, but otherwise, no they're just riffing off each other

Love that you're reacting to the campaign.
The episodes have great subtitles that catch those softer comments so you should turn them on. They're really helpful.
Sam's it's on comment is because they are voice actors and doing accents is supposed to be their thing. It's fun to hear where they start and where they ended up.
Matt works with each person before the campaign starts to make their character with them. They hand him ideas and stuff they want to do and he makes it work unless it would break the world. If something does break the world Matt works with them to get what they want but in a different way. Matt then takes what he gives them and puts his own twist on it. They've been playing together long enough and trust him enough to do this.
They played a session zero at home without the cameras to get used to their new characters. It takes the pressure off of having others watch. Tal and Ashley didn't get one though because of how busy she was. It does seem like Tal and Matt at least talked about Molly. Every other group got a mini-quest and when we start it was the morning after.

Agree about the captions, and it's important to know that part way through this campaign (I think around the 1/3 mark?) they upgraded from auto captions to human stenography, so the caption quality improves dramatically at that point. Their stenographer must be heroic

    • @miranda4073
      @miranda4073 Před rokem +3

@@lipsum42 The captions do get way better! (Jester voice) Technicallyyy they did have human captioners before, but it was all done by volunteers, who weren't necessarily professional transcribers. Partway through c2 they switched to a professional service, with editing done by a dedicated team, some of whom were volunteer transcribers before. So the jump in quality isn't automatic -> human, it's volunteers -> professionals :)
I just always like to shout out the volunteers who did that service for years, because I was part of it! Not hugely involved, because there was an enormous team and by a certain point, so many people wanted to help that you had to fight to claim a section to caption! They each played a lvl 1 game with Matt before the stream to 'feel out' their new characters and classes. This is not explicit, but it helps to fill in what the characters were up to in the hours and days before meeting and may get referred to obliquely such as Nott and Caleb having a bad day and Nott nearly getting caught. Jester Beau and Fjord getting paid for a monster hunt. These events are just contextual for the characters to arrive at this point: staying in this in together. So yes, in that sense contrived, but as for the cast interacting and Matt jumping in, that was all improv.

Origins are all the player's backstories. A little bit of Vox, and M9. Shadows of Mordor. (Typing as I watch) There is a thing called session 0. You create your character. You can decide to pair up with someone then, or be a loner from where ever and you don't have to go as deep as these guys, but they're doing this to entertain and have fun, so their stories are deeper than most. AND REMEMBER, these are voice actors so they do more of the acting out of their characters, role-playing.

The greatness of a dnd session comes when everyone works together (not necessarily in character, but as players) to create a cohesive story. Such as when Liam and Sam's characters are talking about food and Matt uses that narrative to transition the scene to a more open place where more can happen.

  • @melissanotthewebsbusiness7272

You mentioned Dark Horse Comics, and you're right, they've been bringing amazing stories since the 1990's (old comic geek here!)
One of their earliest successes was The Sandman comic, by master storyteller Neil Gaiman.

So, just watching bit by bit but the introduction can be done a few different ways for any game, but what Matt seems to do is bring people in, introducing the new characters to each other in smaller sections, so before the first session (this one) he has a "session 0" to kind of introduce the tone of the setting, make sure the players are good with what they picked to play, and also get a jump start with them knowing at least 1 other character. So, like Molly & Yasha, Caleb & Nott, then Jester, Fjord & Beau all know each other separately...it makes the "meeting in a tavern" go way more smoothly.

Painting them can be a hobby all itself, but you can buy pre-painted miniatures. There are also thousands of video on how to paint and some modern techniques that can help you get miniatures on the table relatively quickly. But miniature painting can be an investment, the deeper and deeper you get in. And yes practice will improve your quality, but don't let yourself be afraid of that, just get stuck in.

I know a lot of people advise starting with campaign 2, or skipping the first 28 episodes of campaign 1. I disagree. It's a lot easier to start with the early cringe than to try and go back to it. It set up a lot of things that you see later in campaign 1, and there's a charm to those early episodes, despite the technical (and personnel) problems. Since you're watching the animated series, it's interesting to see the differences between the series and the campaign. And to see the cast reactions to those iconic moments. Honestly, that's the part of the campaign that you miss out on most by just watching the animated series. There are so many moments that were made iconic because of how the cast reacted.
To answer a few questions, the opening theme song was a disco-fied version of their original theme song, written by Jason Charles Miller. They didn't do "Your Turn To Roll" until they got the animated opening.
So Sam's "it's on" comment is about the ridiculousness of his voice choice for Nott. No, this is pretty much all improved. They're all just that good at picking up cues and jumping into openings that are provided by the other players. The only thing that might be more scripted is Matt's introduction setting up the world and the setting for this campaign. And the way that they set it up, there are usually a couple groups (Nott and Caleb; Fjord, Jester, and Beau; and Molly and Yasha). The people in those groups know each other, but they don't know the people in the other groups. So this episode is them meeting each other.
