      So true! Those "but it's my style!" people often don't realize that artists with more experience will immediately know it's an excuse for not understanding the fundamentals, anatomy, etc. When the "it's my style" phrase is true, the artist doesn't even need to state it. We all understand by looking at the art that the artist made the conscious decision to simplify/exaggerate/enhance something using their vast artistic knowledge.

Some people just like to copy random stylized elements without even knowing what they’re stylizing or if they should even use it. a good artist would be able to explain their design choices, a bad artist doesn’t know why they do what they do and just uses a lame excuse. Also the fact that people let small techniques define their style. Timmy, the random, solid black shadow under your character’s neck doesn’t make it “your style.” In fact, you just copied the technique from someone on social media. It’s a combination of techniques and how you interpret things that makes your art yours.

  • @Ld_277
    @Ld_277 Před 2 lety +31

    Something I wish you touched upon is that the modern obsession with realism extends beyond even just visual art but into other mediums as well. I can't tell you how much I wince every time I hear a film being criticized for having 'unrealistic dialogue' or an 'unrealistic plot', particularly if the plot incorporates elements of magical realism. One of my favorite recent films is 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' yet time and time again people seem to complain about how 'bad' the acting is, how stiff and monotonous everyone speaks. People seem unable to grasp this sort of thing as a deliberate artistic choice that adds an extra dimension to the piece. I'd love to see more creatives out there like Yorgos Lanthimos or Charlie Kaufman, yet if box office numbers are to audiences seem utterly uninterested in anything that experiments beyond conventional depictions of human interaction.
    Video games seem to be the only medium where subversion of realism is commonplace, mostly out of necessity for gameplay reasons, historical technological limitations, and to avoid tedium, yet as graphics increase in fidelity, there seems to be this large push, particularly from AAA western developers towards this perceived ultimate goal of hyper-realism in both graphics and gameplay (see: Red Dead Redemption 2), and it is likely the reason why most games worth even playing these days are small projects coming out of indie studios.

    • @skyworm8006
      @skyworm8006 Před 2 lety +3

      To be honest the concept 'magical realism' itself only exists because of this. Because in the Englishspeaking world it is seen as distinct and noteworthy instead of just normal freedom of fiction. They also take this and emphasise it as distinct in their own works, which tends to the miss the mark as a result, a codified gimmick.
      But yeah. I think the attachment to supposed realism or accuracy, especially from laymen criticising something, is because they don't have anything else to say or aren't able to say anything else. It's the same with people focusing on worldbuilding, plot, and characters (that is, their shallow personal like or dislike, and nothing about the relation to themes and aesthetics and other factors together in a piece of media). Emphasis on these three things, especially when judgement of 'good' amounts to what they feel is realistic (which may not actually be so realistic but nonetheless tries to assume the authority of what is real/true/accurate), is because they don't understand the craft, they don't understand what makes a good story or experience. It is a kind of cultural decay and disconnect wrought by science literalism and abusing low-hanging fruit for content and gotchas. It's annoying because it's talking about anything but the actual work.

      Not to mention the artistic choice within a realistic game like Red Dead Redemption 2, this game doesn't have the same realism as Naughty Dog games, or The Witcher 3 and recently Resident Evil 4 Remake, are distinct and unique visual choices each with a stylized realism whether it's good or not, but that is reduced to 4K and now look how the new generation is more realistic GTA 6 will be even more realistic and in the end, whatever the art direction that the company brought to this world.

    I genuinely needed this. Ive been hyper fixated on my own art and critiquing it in a way the is demoralizing or makes it out to seem unworthy of attention or care. I love making art and would love to do it for the rest of my life but kept telling myself its “not good enough” or “not realistic enough” when i myself don’t even look at and gawk over realistic looking art. Its always the artists that add their own unique twist on their pieces that draw me in and idealize them as id say my favorite artists. I shouldn’t be so scared to go outside the lines and make something that feels authentic and true to my view on nature and the world. Because art i create is supposed to be a fragmented look inside my view of the world and who i am. Might i just say thank you for this. You’ve said all the things i needed to hear.

    *I think art is about exploration.*
    Whether the discoveries made are good or bad I think it’s important to allow them to happen. Saying something should be only realistic or even only stylistic is something that stifles artistic exploration. You can call art bad or good, but to say that it shouldn’t exist at all is to put boundaries on art when art best grows through limitless possibilities for experimentation.

  • @IDontNeedYourShittyHandle

    Another point about photo-realistic art renderings that shouldn't be forgotten: in spite of how little we have of this after all the time we have spent choosing what to paint, it would totally help to sometimes make more photo-realistic art that uses realistic textures and lighting and all the rest _BUT_ also contains subjects/objects that don't exist or can't exist. I can think of examples like a city made of Oscar Reutersvard geometry that mostly looks like a real city, or a realistic forest with a strikingly-real-feeling dragon in the middle starting to burn it down by breathing flaming donuts out of its nose. I see no reason why we shouldn't have more people try to make photo-realistic but simultaneously surreal paintings sometimes. I'd do it if I were skilled enough, that's one of my dreams!

    I really love your shift from browsing DeviantArt to discussion of art things and history. I still love to see DeviantArt, but this seems more like your choice and it's very fun
    Edit: Realism is so overrated by many people, especially in elite art circles. Realism can be grueling, and take forever. I think in some ways, stylization can take just as much if not more effort than making art look just like real life, because you have to find out how to do it right. I prefer stylization over realism just because of how much people think realism is the only route.

      Some of the principles regarding stylization out there are great. There was an excellent theory on color theory for art that another youtuber did. I personally adhere to asymmetrical theory when taking extracting photos (extracted from videos) of sunsets amidst the landscape. Asymmetrical body language is also often considered very attractive for posing people for photographs.
      One artist whom I greatly admire is Claude Lorraine, he is a master of putting the most dramatic part of a landscape scene in the central focus, and his use of color is quite a feast for the eyes.

Leonardo was commissioned to paint one of the refectory's wall and he decided to paint the Last Supper.Jesus and all the apostles are sitting all on one side of the table not only because it looks way better like that, but also so they could face the monks while they were eating, to create a sort of inclusion in the scene. As first year students this confused us at first, because like you said, many people think that more realism = better. But by not sticking to photo realism, you can add so much more to your work.
