AutoCAD How to Create (Multiple) Viewports in a New Layout
In this video I go over how to create a new viewport in autocad. To create a viewport I show you a few ways to create multiple viewports of various shapes a sizes in a new layout. Including polygonal and circle viewports. I also go through the process of creating and new layout by using a drawing template to save time and automate the process.
This video was a response to a few comments I've received about how to show more detail on a single layout without it being a mess.
As always don't forget to subscribe, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
Cheers and thanks for watching

This video is several years old, however, it is perfect for what i need to do. your pace is great. one thing that would be helpful is to move your socials info off of the ribbon so we can see the tabs you are choosing. thank you.
Thanks Christa!
I did stop putting the socials up until after the tutorial in later videos, but appreciate the feedback and definitely didn't mean to cover anything important!:)
Thanks again for watching and the comment!
Cheers
This is great. I'm still learning about the AutoCAD 2018. I watch your video about the viewport. This is better than reading the book.
That's great! Glad my videos are helping. I definitely learn better from video than books as well
Thanks very much for your time and your helpfull videos.
CZcams should pay guys like you more than other youtubers :)
This video is the exact answer to all my questions!
Holy.. your a life saver bro. Got a new sub! Lol breaks it down more than my text book did .
Thank you for making this tutorial.
not a problem! Thanks for watching and commenting
Cheers
Thanks man!!
This was my only problem with cad but now I can move on with finalizing my project and all the credit goes to you buddy! One issue is that when plotting with this method the rectangles are showing on the paper view, how can we get red of the outlines?
Thanks, glad I could help! To get rid of the outlines of your viewports, just make sure to put your viewports on a VP or Viewport layer (any layer you want to use for your viewports) and set that layer to Noplot in the layer manager (click the litter printer icon to cross it out, meaning that layer wont plot)
@@Cadintentions It did work, BUT :), It disabled the monochrome B&W prints so I can only plot color sheets now!
Never Mind, I think the monochrome drivers were corrupted. I was able to fix it by creating a new Layout sheet. THANKS A LOT!
Thanks for sharing the technique. But your Twitter tag usually cover the screen that lets us miss the step
Thanks!
Sorry about that, typically I try to place it up top when the step is down at the command line or elsewhere. Lately I put them at the end of the video instead. I'll remember not to have them distract whenever possible. Thanks again!!!
Cheers
Good video but have two questions.
1) my drawing has many layers. It would be nice to selectively turn off some layers in a viewport to show detail.
2). How would you set up a single paper print to show multiple viewports using different drawings in each viewport. If a drawing changes, it does not affect the other part drawings.
thank you very much
Cheers! Thanks for watching and the comment
When you make a new viewport, it let's you right click and select the scale. But when I make a rectangular viewport it auto fills it with the view i chose previously and won't let me choose scale
Easy enough to understand after one or two views, sound.
Awesome, thanks for watching, glad it helped!
Thanks! This helped out a ton!
THANKS A LOT THIS VIDEO WAS VERY HELPFULL FOR ME.
what are you typing to smaller the text size?
Thanks...
Cheers!
How do you enter different vports when double click isn't working
You can click the word Model or Paper along the bottom bar to switch between paper space and model space if you run into any issues with double-clicking. Also, CTRL+R with let you cycle between your viewports if you have more than one in a layout.
Thank you for this. Question, what layer should layout viewports be in?
Not a problem, glad I could help!
I tend to put viewports on a dedicated viewport layer, can be called simply VP or Viewport. If working for a larger company there is typically a standard CAD layer list and it will contain a viewport layer. I also tend to set the layer to noplot so I don't see the viewport border when printing.
Thanks for watching and the comment!
@@Cadintentions Thank you! I understood it very much
Yo how would you do Base command to make projected views on Mac
Is there any way to show the extent of the smaller VP in the main VP? That is the key to making a clear multi-VP layout I think, something older versions of CAD seem to lack. Do the new ones have this?
what is the shortcut you using to adjust the scale of annotations
WHEN I FREEZE THE CIRCLE THE OBJECT NOT CICLE IN LAYOUT. THANKS, WHAT DID YOU TYPE FOR MAKING SCALE IN SIDE VIEW PORT PLEASE SHARE.
Hi - How do you remove the box around the viewport? I use CAD 2020
You can put your viewports on a specific layer and set that layer to no plot in the layer manager. That tends to be the easiest and most consistent way:)
Cheers and thanks for watching!!
How do you modify a rectangular viewport to a polygon shape? Or how do you add grips or taking them away from a shape?
amazing video
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video! I was wondering why text did not scale? For example @ 9:00 i can clearly see that text in each viewport is different size.. Is there something else to it, that they would be all the same?
Hey, Thanks for watching and the question! You're right, at 9min it does look like they didn't match in scale. I just re watched that part of the video and it looks like I hadn't bothered to set the annotative scale of the large view which is why the text in it is so small. I am planning to make a video this week or next covering annotative scaling more in depth since it's a pretty common question and kinda tough to master. You are right though, if set up correctly and you set all of your viewports annotative scales properly, all of the text (that has the same annotative paper size) will show up at the same size when printed.
Thanks again for the comment, and for chatting in the live stream last week!
Hope you have a good one, and cheers!
Do you have a video how to scale a drawing in inches using zoom in viewports. ??
Can you advise how you got the text to maintain one size in the multiple view ports ?
Thanks Dude
Thanks for watching!
Thanks this really helped!
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. Been watching with my gf for the last couple of months xD
@Ishaan Curtis Yup, been using Instaflixxer for years myself =)
my problem is my viewports cant view in model in lay out only viewports can pop no object
How do you print without viewport showing?
How do you get rid of the lines that show the border of different viewpoints when plotting?
The easiest way is to put your viewports on a Layer that is set to noplot.
Is it possible to measure dimension over viewport
Eg: if object is 2000mm means I want to show in tow viewport in order to get good presentation and also I need measure the object
How can I measure the dimension across two viewport?
Hi brother
I need to know what is properties or your text and dimensions.
When you give REGEN comand in paper space your all viewport inside text and dimensions size is same.
Wen am doing than zom in zoom out mach the hight it's take too mach time
How do you add individual Label? I don't see a video on that yet?
Thanks a lot, sir. can you 3ds max interior design with specifying light, building material, and Vray rendering? love your tutorial and keep up
I am having troubles trying to find this but I want to stack my viewports. I want to have a full viewport layout of a cabinet then within that view port in a couple different places with a stacked viewport that is zoomed in on a few of the smaller components. I have heard wipeout might work but I am having issues moving the wipeout to the back so I can see the secondary viewport.
Hey i want to ask how you do the writing as well as the dimensions in the same size?
Me too!
If I want to do a correction in one viewport but I don't want it to be corrected in The other viewport, how I do that please?
How to rotate the viewport
Hi I would like to know how can I Set 2 viewports, 1 on top of the other one However always is showing me drawings behind of the port that is on top. I was checking and maybe is because i Bring this layout of another drawing? I try to edit Visual Style to but appears disable...
Excellent one! here, In previous AutoCAD Architecture Version I can draw above the viewport on paper space, now I can't do that... is there any setting or command to draw on top of that viewport? like what I am doing before, after finished with my 3d, on paper space I need to put some label, materials and other. It shows only the portion of outside viewport.
Hi, I am new to AutoCAD, once you create a 1st rectangular viewpoint, how did you zoom in or move to a certain location?
If you have a mouse wheel, hold to click and move the mouse. The mouse wheel also acts as zoom in/out via scrolling up and down
Do you find 16 GB of RAM to be sufficient? Do you get bogged down during normal workloads?
yes, I've done quite a bit of surface modelling and working with large point and surface datasets with the 16gb of ram and haven't had any noticeable bogging issues. I've found that having a fast HDD or even better a Solid State drive helps more than the extra ram.
How much do find the amount of VRAM or CPU, GPU and RAM clock frequencies affect performance? For the CPU, which seems to matter: thread count, the scale of the architecture (22nm vs 14nm), or instructions per clock and clock speed?
I am using Autocad For Electrical Engineering. except for big heavy projects files, my computer handles very well everything else. I have a little bit old pc: Intel Core2Quad 2.6Ghz / ATI HD 2GB vram / 8Gb DDR2.
For surface modeling, 3D Rendering, and arethmetic calculations, things are diffrent.
Hey I wanted to ask if I am creating multiple sheets one as an overview, and breaking them apart on other sheets what is the best way to do this?
Hi, how are you bro?
How to do changes individually in layouts as everything gets mesh up while changing the objects?
Brandon is your drawing annotative scale or random only?
Because wen u made the vport in object d scale or size of the txt didnt change
Tnx a lot bro
Bro...How do u overlap view tab one on the other in layout tab ??
your title bar is blocking the toolbar
For the life of me I cannot figure out what keystrokes you are making even though I can hear them better than anything else in the video... BRRUMPUMPUMPITYUMPMPMP. Something to do with nudging the annotative text to adapt to a suitable size. would be nice for you to talk about what is happening with the old fingers. thanks tho
Sorry about that, I've since started using a different mic that tends to limit the key noise, and I try to talk through any keystrokes when possible.
thanks for watching though and for the comment and info!
cheers
He was typing "REGEN".
please I get a youtube of structural design of footing and slabs , Thanks
hey ,i want to create multiple view ports at a time ,
i mean if i have plenty grids like around 200 at these point i don't want to spend more time on each grid ,is there any solution for these
my opinion is just i want to create only one view port and i want to apply for remaining grids at a time so i can save my time is that possible
thank you
how do u fit the text just tipping on the keybord automatically????
Hofman M P he typed the regen command fyi
Hello, it is possible that you can make it the video clear, b'cos its seems can't get through.
Sir I have a problem in viewport in viewport while scrolling mouse drawing also zoom in and zotout happen can u explain
THANK CRACK
Do you teach beginners?
i have a question please reply ASAP. I started working in this company and there was a guy(he left) he made electrical drawings in one sheet everything in one plan and then separated them using layout. so my question is how did he do it? I have no idea please help.
He used Viewports
@@baijubasheer2010 thanks brother I sorted it out. But still thanks.
Your Twitter address is blocking part of your menu ribbon
Thanks, ive since moved the twitter bar to the ends of videos! Sorry about that and thanks for the comment!
seahawks babeeey!
why do you keep typing "regen" ???
This video not tutorial video. Just to show your skill.
