  • This video was recorded using my Moto g6 smartphone. The speakers sound way better in person. I bought this pair about 15 years ago, used. I have listened to the KEF Blades ($31000) and B&W speakers (valued at $16000); owned Infinity Qe2s, ROR monitors (handmade in Long Island, NY),Elac Uni-Fi UF5 and Wharfedale Crystal CR 4.3 (now made in China). In my opinion, the Bose 401's - driven by a vintage 100 watt x 2 Vector Research receiver, 1984 - sound warmer and more refined. Perhaps, I have grown accustomed to the sound reproduced by my speakers, or It could be the paper drivers from years ago produced a warmer sound than the driver materials of today.
As with lighting trends, which have slowly moved to harsh and bright LED, we've moved to a coloring of sound that is, in my humble opinion, harsh and fatiguing - making vintage speakers a smart buy for music listeners who prefer warmth, breadth and clarity. To beat the warm sound from paper drivers, audio consumers will have to spend thousands of dollars!
