Sorry that you had the technical difficulties but now you have extra cases for gifts, or to keep just in case you find another use for them! Clever project for sure though! You've got me thinking of making something like this for a pizza cutter that doesn't have a protective guard. Of course the shape would have to be different, but the same concept.

Love these. My back fabric puckers when I quilt strips like this. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Have you tried using a walking foot?
Also, cd it be you tension is too tight?
