Did anyone catch that the part of the first story with the tire where he said if the group doesn't work together including everyone speaking on the subject during the presentation then they all fail it? And how she wrote everyone a script to memorize and when she asked to go over it once they didn't show up or memorize it. She would have failed with them if she did the presentation with them. So she didn't just remove herself from the situation she also saved her grade. Good for her.

Group projects like that are hard enough, add on top that you could do all the work and still fail because of your dumbass teammates, or do all the work and they get a grade they never deserved, and it makes it all so much worse. I've had a multiple year long friendship completely end because of a group project.
Like, I understand the importance of teamwork, especially in engineering where all my group projects were, but if the professor doesn't put any safeguards in place to ensure good teamwork is rewarded and bad teamwork isn't, then not only is the point not served, but the exact opposite is reinforced. The people who work the hardest and are happy to help get completely exploited and may still fail despite all their efforts, and the worst of the worst go on to be in positions that absolutely require that teamwork and are completely unable to meet the demands of their career.

As the good student that was ALWAYS paired up with the slackers in class (teachers thought I'd motivate them or something, but really it just stressed me out to do a group level amount of work by myself well enough to maintain my 90+ average) that were always absent, suspended, and couldn't care leas about school. In college it was the same speech "you're adults, don't tell me about it" so I for real would've done the same thing, especially since I went to college before like Google docs and "shared" PowerPoints and stuff was a thing. Thankfully a lot of powerpoints we had our own slides to present and we'd get graded on our own projects. It's was NEVER a situation of people you didn't get along with, it was legit always the people flat out not doing ANYTHING but wanting to coast and get the "A" knowing the "A" student didn't want to get a bad grade. Pretty grad school was the only time that groups were AWESOME. Everyone had 3.5-4.0 GPAs they wanted to maintain AND they wanted to be there so we'd all divide the stuff evenly and collaborate and such.

I had this experience with my own friends. Very sweet girls for the most part, but they did *not* want to apply themselves on the assignment (I was generally one of the better students in the group). I didn't get revenge or anything, but I had kind of a nervous breakdown and snapped a little bit, like, 'ok, are we going to do the assignment or not?' kind of attitude. They responded to that like, 'ugh, alright, *fine*, I guess we'll try to not fail Science.'
I was also kind of at my wits' end already, cause I wasn't doing very well in Science, and wanted to take every opportunity to push my grade up. I did push it up in the second semester, with a chemistry project, all by *myself* because my friends all joined together and left me out (can't remember if they did it deliberately, probably not).

Isn’t the point of education to prepare people for their careers? In a job, if you’re working on a group project and someone isn’t doing *their job*, you report them to superiors. Superiors manage the conflict.
Unless you’re management, it’s not your job to manage your coworkers, so why does a professor think it makes sense for students to manage their fellow students?? He just doesn’t want to do his full job. If he doesn’t want to manage conflicts, he shouldn’t force group projects in the first place 🤦🏼‍♀️

I've had profs like that, "You're adults now! You deal with it!" Yeah, lots of college kids are sheltered and are STILL KIDS. If they've been riding diligent students their whole educational career what makes you think that suddenly becoming an "adult" will change them? You don't suddenly become a different person who properly communicates and pulls their own weight just because you pass an imaginary milestone into adulthood.
Profs don't want to mediate squabbling children, I get that, but hanging your good students out to dry like that is shitty behavior that just enforces the fact that once they get to the workplace that they will have no one to turn to, so they keep their heads down and don't "make waves" for others. Grit your teeth and bear it. People will step on you and you have to smile and offer to shine their shoes while they do.

We just kind of keep them on, unless we're settled and not likely to need to wear them again. Everybody kind of keeps their shoes in their room (or they are supposed to, one of my brothers and one of my sisters have a habit of their shoes escaping and ending up under the table or in the living room). On and off we did shoes at the door, but I have a million siblings (actually just 9, some are adopted), and the front landing was never really conducive to them all getting their shoes on at the same time, or taking them off and on as they went in and out of the house like a horde of shrieking goblins.
You'd always have to go get your shoes from the little mountain of them, and then go back to where you had room to work to get them on without getting someone's elbow in your face, or go into the house to get them off, and toss them down into the pile while risking whoever was down there. So then we'd move the shoe spot further into the house, but then you're already inside and well past the door. And we don't live in a rural area, so keeping our shoes outside seemed odd. So it kind of just became something we didn't care about.

I disagree with their take on the neighbors. For starters, these new neighbors chose violence in handling a new area when EVERYONE tried to let them know all intentions were friendly. At this point OP does not need these new neighbors; they're obviously surrounded by plenty of others they do get along with and have for help. The new neighbors are the odd ones out, who chose to be ignorant and aggressive towards everyone around them. They are the ones who need their neighbors and therefore are the only ones who should put forth any effort to mend what they broke.

I'd end up firing project manager who hired the team and the coasting team members, watch the OP to see if they can work in a team (amidst other hard working employees), then promote them, since they are one person who was capable of doing all the work that was assigned to multiple people, on time.

Commenting on the last story. This is my personal favourite story about my friend being a badass. She's worked in an auto-parts shop for many years and has a lot of mechanic knowledge. I was working in a coffee shop at the time. She stopped in every day for her morning coffee, and one day had some car trouble in the parking lot. The cafe had big windows, so every one could see her as she popped open the hood of her car to figure out the issue. We had these regular customers, a group of men in their 60's, who watched this and got up to go and help her. Me and coworker both knew my friend knew what she was doing, and let them know she was fine. Sure enough in less than 5 minutes she had fixed the problem and drove away. It was incredibly satisfying to watch their reactions, and it's a story I bring up with my friend all the time. This type of thing happens to her at her job constantly, where people expect her to know nothing about mechanics but frequently has her male coworkers come to her with questions in front of customers. Shutting down sexist assumptions always brings me joy.

Amanda wondered why she was defending the restaurant industry, and I can relate. My dad was a chef and owned restaurants, and I worked for him from the age of 15 until I graduated college. I was expected to work harder than everyone else, and I did everything--cleaning toilets, washing dishes, bussing, waiting tables, food prep, line cook, you name it. There is no "easy" job in most restaurants. It's physically and emotionally difficult work, and I think when you do it you form a sort of group trauma bond that extends to everyone who has ever worked in that industry.

As someone who lives near the east coast it gave me so much joy Amanda explaining snow life to Shayne and Olivia.
Pretty sure the only reason people in snowy areas have kids is to have them do the shoveling and not you.
Edit: I should've waited to post this comment later in the video because as someone who also worked in a bar, Amanada informing Olivia and Shayne how cutting people off worked also made me happy.

Yuppp I’m on the east coast and snow is pretty the first hour when you’re in your bed and it just started after it’s hell for 4 months😂 me and my brother had to practically take shifts to dig up the snow😂

I just didn't shovel, my dad used to try to make me and neighbors after but you shovel once and at some point you're killing yourself for nothing you people live in places with snow you can get used to walking on it

I'm from the east coast of Canada and snow makes me angry, just the thoughts of shoveling for hours just for the plow to go buy and make a giant bank Infront of the drive way.

Bruh sometimes I wonder how Olivia survived this far in life. And I mean that in the sweetest way possible. The amount of things she’s clueless about is craaaaazy!

What a masty assumption the snow and alcohol thing is rather benign and completely understandable if you dont live in an area with heavy snow and dont partake in bar and drinking culture

My Hot Take: She's putting it on to be "more attractive." It's like the Valley Girl version of most Southern women. I rejected my upbringing in this regard, like No Mom, I'm not interested in any dude who only likes me if he thinks my iq is 20 pts lower than it is. Ugh

That first one is a learning curb for the other students. Can’t just use people like that and expect everything to be done for you. Good on her.

The thing with group projects is that you’re graded as a group. If one person is doing all the work and no one else does, the person who did work either fails or gets a worse grade than they deserve. Group project person is a HERO for what they did

I love the petty tire story. It sounds like they spent more time trying to get group participation, than they did buying a tire. Also, if they have a receipt then they can return it.
The rest of the group deserved the fail since they didn't want to do the work.👏

As someone who consistently carried the team thru all of high school and the first two years of undergrad presentations and group projects, I’m totally fine with what the first OP did. All they did was let the other people get the grade they deserved.
